JOHN A VIET CON: DOLE
New York Post ^ | 8/23/04 | IAN BISHOP

Posted on 08/23/2004 12:34:46 AM PDT by kattracks

[snip]

Dole, a former Kansas senator, said Kerry brought the attack ads on by hyping his Vietnam service.

"I said months ago, 'John, don't go too far,' " Dole said. "And I think he's got himself into this wicket now where he can't extricate himself because not every one of these people can be Republican liars."

Kerry spokesman Chad Clanton said, "It's unfortunate that Sen. Dole is making statements that official U.S. Navy records prove false. This is partisan politics, not the truth."

In another development, the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, whose two ads blasting Kerry's war record have rocked the presidential campaign, deny Democrats' claims that they're props for the GOP.

"Our message is our message and no one tells us what to say," Swift Boat vet Van Odell said on "Fox News Sunday."

A CBS poll shows Kerry's support among veterans has dropped 10 points since the group began advertising.

Kerry launched a new ad yesterday — after his first damage-control ad last week did little to raise his poll numbers.

The new ad features President Bush and John McCain, with a narrator saying, "Bush smeared John McCain four years ago. Now, he's doing it to John Kerry."

That spot, which implies that the Bush campaign is behind the Swift Boat ads, is designed to make it appear that McCain is bashing Bush. McCain heads Bush's re-election bid in Arizona and has asked Kerry not to use him in the Democratic ads.

The Bush campaign criticized the ad as "false and libelous."

This ad is BAD.
Folks who like McCain and remember SC's feud,
do not necessarily follow politics like we do here
and this ad has the potential of hurting POTUS.

Plus, POTUS has already endured $63 million dollars worth
of attack ads launched against him. This one is really
over the top. The others are and were sort of laughable,
this one "can" hurt.

You'll just have to see it.
If you taped MTP, you'll see it in the first segment.

Like I said, he should denounce the ad, and not make a half-hearted attempt to get his face off DNC advertisements set out to smear Bush. A little consistency on McCain's part is in order. Afterall, he denounced the Swiftee's ad and told them to pull their ads.

Exactly right.
John must denounce this ad and tell Kerry to stop using him in his ads.

John needs an ad of his own, but of course he'll NEVER do
that --- it's his and Feingold's mess as is.

Everybody has found the loophole in CFR, and nary a word is said from either one of the authors. The whole thing is a disgusting mess.

Powerful in what way?

It's his tone of voice ..

With that said it will back fire on Kerry because it cuts off what the President actually said and McCain doesn't want to be pulled in the middle of Kerry's problems

Kerry will try to make it a debate issue .. but Bush has always stated that Kerry and mcCain had served with honor

No doubt Kerry will make it an issue during the debate. The worst thing President Bush needs to do is actually jump into the fray, so far he has shown no signs of jumping into the fray. If Bush stays above the fray, it will only show Kerry to be a petty man hellbent on acquiring more power.

It may be a powerful ad. John McCain should denounce it.

That said, the SwiftVets are kicking Kerry's ass. I don't think it's gonna make a difference what ads he runs.

Only to well-informed citizens, almost all of whom have already decided their votes.

I don't think that any swing voters will understand what the heck MORON.ORG is trying to do with their ads.
