What is it about Tancredo that makes him unelectable?

Just about everything.

He probably has the most popular position on immigration of any of the candidates mentioned.

So why don't candidates running currently just adopt his position? (Fwiw, they're not stupid.)

I would be very surprised if Keyes wins in Illinois.
They elected and keep re-electing Durbin, so how reasonable can they (as an electorate) be on matters of faith and morals? Keyes is seen as a carpetbagger more so than Hilary. Liberal Democrats are what Chicago loves. As Chicago goes, so goes Illinois.

I hope I'm completely wrong come November.

Maybe, maybe not. Thank God we've come so far since then though. We're also infinitely wealthier and better off than we were then. Largely because of immigration which Tancredo strongly opposes.

    Mitt Romney is a good guy, an eloquent and persuasive speaker. He has a good sense of humor and comes across in the W sorta way that just makes people like him. The national electoral problem for Romney is that he is LDS, a Mormon. Most folks wouldn't care but there is still a large enough segment of the American electorate that is bigoted and it would cost him the election. I think we saw something similar with Jindahl in LA. By all rights he should have won that race. It was the election day misgivings of some voters about voting for a brown-skinned governor with a funny name (despite his Christian credentials) that did him in. In 2000 Gore probably imagined that he was getting a bonus with the Jewish vote by choosing Lieberman but what he didn't calculate was the anti-Semitic vote. It is a very small fringe of people but it is particularly strong in the African American population (Think Nation of Islam, Jesse Jackson's hymie-town slurs). Did it cost him 300 votes in Florida???

    America will only elect a mainstream protestant or a Catholic to the top spot. Many evangelical protestant churches (particularly in the key southern states needed for a GOP win) openly condemn the Mormons as a cult, their teachings as false prophecy and their leaders as evil. This poses a huge problem for a Romney presidential bid. It would be hard to rally the conservative congretations to go out on Tuesday and vote for a Mormon president when Monday night's Bible Study was on the evils of Mormonism.  I think the only way Mitt could make it would be as a VP first so that Americans would know him well enough to overcome the bigotry. Some will argue that his election to the MA Governorship proves that he can overcome religious stereotypes, but MA is a poor sample for the rest of the country. Just being a Republican who can get elected in MA is a religious miracle.

As do I, but he would instantly wrap up Florida and all the South, once again forcing the Dem nominee (Hillary, of course) to fight to have to keep their own states while trying to win over the only few red states that are still in play.

You're absolutely right about Jindal's loss here in Louisiana. Race was definitely a factor. As a result, we are stuck with Blank-o for at least 4 years, with Mitch Landrieu (Brown-roots's younger brother) as Lt. Gov. and no doubt drooling for the top slot. (shudder)

At least David Vitter has a fair shot at the US Senate seat being vacated by Breaux, and Jindal looks to be a shoo-in for Vitter's old US House seat.

GOP -- Sen. George Allen VA -- Served in the House, as Gov and now Sen. Understands all levels of the legislature/governing process. Gov experience very helpful. He's experienced and comes from a key region (VA/NC/TN/). Also, he's heading up the National Senate Campaign committee so he's building a nationwide donor base.

Libs -- Hillary vs. Sen. Evan Bayh IN -- Bayh was also a Gov. and has some national name ID. Their primary will be for the future of the Dem party -- extreme lib vs. what some would consider a moderate. Hillary wins because hardcore lib base worships the gas from her butt.
