Presidential candidate John Kerry telephoned former Sen. Bob Dole Monday morning to complain about Dole's demand a day earlier that he apologize to Vietnam veterans for protesting the war, the one-time Republican presidential candidate revealed Monday afternoon.
"John Kerry called me this morning, which surprised me," Dole told radio host Sean Hannity. "He said he was very disappointed, we'd been friends. I said John, we're still friends, but [the Swiftvets] have first amendment rights, just as your people have first amendment rights.
Dole told Kerry, "I'm not trying to stir anything up, but I don't believe everyone of these people who have talked about what happened are Republican liars.
"And very frankly, Bush is my guy, and I'm tired of people on your side calling him everything from a coward to a traitor to everything - a deserter."
Dole said he urged Kerry, "Why don't you call George Bush today and say, 'Mr. President, let's stop all this stuff about the National Guard and Vietnam - and let's talk about the issues."
Dole said Kerry responded, "I haven't spent one dime attacking President Bush."
But the Republican war hero shot back, "You don't have to. You've got all the so-called mainstream media, plus you've got MoveOn.org. and all these other groups that have spent millions and millions of dollars trying to tarnish Bush's image."
"Don't tell me you don't know what some of these people are doing," he told Kerry.
"Everybody like quiet heroes," Dole added, saying he told Kerry, "John, everybody knows you were in Vietnam and the less you say about it, the better."
Dole said he tried to end the tense conversation cordially by telling Kerry, "I wish you good luck, up to a point."
There must be something in the Viagra! Go Bob Dole!
Dang! The Bobster's pretty hot these days!
Bob, you did good -- now don't go all John McCain on us!
Wow. Man Dole is the shiznick. I think the old boy must be really ticked off at being dragged into this issue by the Boston Globe
Hey Bob, you da Man.............
This is the Bob Dole I remember from the 1970's.
Bob has always been great in these types of exchanges. He really earned his Senate Majority Leader position.
He is also very funny. When Liddy Dole was being named to the Department of Transportation, he quipped "I regret that I have but one wife to give for my country."
Best stuff I've heard from Dole in years!!!!!
Better yet -I wonder what George W. Bush said in his phone call today to John McCain?
"Everbody likes a quiet hero". Bob Dole said it all.
Unbelieveable -- I didn't think Bob Dole had it in him. Goes to show me how bad Kerry really is!
Kerry gets lower by the day and I didn't think that was possible!
I can't find this anywhere else; it's NewsMax and I'm leery.
But if it is true, what on EARTH has gotten into Bob Dole??
By the time this over John the fraud is gonna wish he never heard of Vietnam.
IMHO, the article and headline, is missleading..Dole didn't just "defend" the Swifties"..he gave them complete "cover"..for whatever they said, or will say..because now, any impugning the SBV is an attack on Dole..Bob most definitely has a dog in this fight..
Dole has a tongue that can saw through concrete. He used it effectively today.
Best stuff I have EVER heard from Bob Dole!
High School U.S.A. I think Dole "broke up" with Kerry.
Just heard it on Hannity. Dole Rocks.
It's called desperation, Sen. Dole.
Dole needs to CC: this conversation to McCain.
How about Ambassador to Great Britain? The old boy still has some fight left in him.
Is Kerry going to whine some more? He really got slammed. You won't see this on the big 3 tv stations.
I hope Soros has another 36 million to transfuse Kerry's campaign. Kerry's call to Dole is evidence it's bleeding out. Soros for his part isn't displaying any smarts. If this was a business deal he'd have cut his losses long ago.
A lot of folks on the street have to have lost respect for him. Soros has been had big time.
He switched to Cialis, so now he can strike when the time is right.
He should pass some along to McCain!
If I had a time machine, I would go back and vote for Dole... But alas, my vote for Perot is a black mark on my image and will forever tarnish my name. ;)
I always liked Dole.
Otherwise, a stellar job by Bob Dole. He's out of my political dog house after that.
Example of a quiet hero is Pat Tillman. Kerry is not a quiet hero and he really should be.
Do you really think the libs will care if they slander Dole? They have in the past.
Hoorah Bob Dole!! That's telling that $#*^)@?! a thing or two. I'm sure Kerry just let the words flow in one ear and out the other, but at least someone was honest and told it like it is.
Good for Bob Dole.
Kerry has nothing to talk about.
I wish he would talk about his senate record.
Or tell the truth about Vietnam.
Too bad Dole didn't get this riled up in 1996... he might be sitting in the White House today, nearing the end of his 8 years in office.
First we learn that Kerry has been calling Vets and begging them to give testimonials - and this is apparently how he convinced that Rood guy.
Now he is making whiney phone calls to anyone who says something critical?
I think this goes way beyond this particular issue to show just how thin skinned Kerry is.
where was this Dole when he was running for president??
I almost sprayed Diet Coke all over my monitor! LOL!
"Bob Dole doesn't take any guff off botoxed metrosexuals with $5,000 haircuts! So don't mess with Bob Dole!"
---Dole said Kerry responded, "I haven't spent one dime attacking President Bush."---
Will it never end?
---When, O Catiline, do you mean to cease abusing our patience? How long is that madness of yours still to mock us? When is there to be an end of that unbridled audacity of yours, swaggering about as it does now? Do not the nightly guards placed on the Palatine Hill--do not the watches posted throughout the city--does not the alarm of the people, and the union of all good men--does not the precaution taken of assembling the senate in thus most defensible place--do not the looks and countenances of this venerable body here present, have any effect upon you? Do you not feel that your plans are detected? Do you not see that your conspiracy is already arrested and rendered powerless by the knowledge which every one here possesses of it? What is there that you did last night, what the night before-- where is it that you were--who was there that you summoned to meet you--what design was there which was adopted by you, with which you think that any one of us is unacquainted?---
Cicero, 1st Oration Against Catiline
Me too. I mean, I don't want him hit by a truck, or anything.
This shouldn't surprise anyone. Bob Dole has never lacked backbone.
Kerry tried to tell Dole that it was all Bush's fault and that Bush had started it.
Dole said no, if I recall it was McAuliffe, etc.
"Everbody likes a quiet hero". Bob Dole said it all.
in other words:
STFU... in a kinder, gentler tone, of course.
LOL! Yeah, it must also cause you to grow big, brass ones!
