Woman Moves in with Scorpions

KUALA LUMPUR - Scorpions will be the bedfellows of a 24-year-old Malaysian woman for more than a month, as she tries to set a new world record for living with the venomous animals.

Nur Malena Hassan moved into a glass box with 6,000 scorpions at a shopping mall in Kuantan, about 160 miles east of Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, Malaysia's New Sunday Times reported.

Nur Malena showed no sign of fear as she entered the box, the paper reported, and scorpions soon began crawling over her body as she was monitored by medical staff and officials from Guinness World Records.

The current record is held by Kanchana Ketkaew of neighboring Thailand, who was stung nine times while she lived in a glass room with more than 3,000 scorpions for 32 days in 2002, Guinness says in its book of records.

Ketkaew, who took the record from a previous Malaysian holder, said at the time she had built up immunity to scorpion bites over six years performing with the bugs for tourists.

Nur Malena, who may leave the glass box for only 15 minutes a day, was to have started her record attempt several days ago but struggled to find enough scorpions, the paper reported.

I saw the headline and thought,"No big deal. Another groupie shacking up with the aging German rock Group, Scorpions."

Imagine my surprise.

"Only in Texas....are the big ones?????"

They are from one and a half to about 3 inches long and kinda skinny. I think they are Striped Bark Scorpions and they are EVERYWHERE! I've even got a few in a terrarium and I've been feeding them bugs. Neat critters! Guess I know just why my house was so cheep now too...

I've lived all over California including the mountains and deserts and NEVER EVER say a live Scorpion in 48 years until we moved to Texas last month!

I'm in the Coachella Valley, and have to do a visual inspection of the shower each and every morning just to be sure. Over the years, I've found around a dozen crawling around in there.

It's a step down, and the neighbor's bug man told me it's likely they come up through the drains, where the PVC didn't get a total seal with the concrete. I suppose that's a good guess, because the other two bathrooms have traditional tubs and we've bagged one or two there also.

It's night time you have to worry about until you get 'em under control. If you can still get some Diazinon or Dursban spray (now off the market) they're the "drug of choice".

Those are the black ones. They're bad news. A single sting can bring an elephant to its knees. The good news is that they only sting when something they're on is breathing.

So....if she lays very still.....

Its news whenever a band thats been around as long as the Scorpions gets even one groupie to move in with them.

Besides, Klaus Meine was sporting Michael Bolton bald-mullet look ten years before Michael Bolton.

"They are from one and a half to about 3 inches long and kinda skinny."

You've got a bunch of babies!

When they get grown, the stingers will be longer than that!

We tie a rope around their tails and let them pull the garden plow.

Or, as the great sage, Homer, once said:

Still one of the best live bands I've seen, even when they were in their balding, bad-permed late 40's.

Oh, heck. Are you quoting Adam Ant to me? Da diddley qua qua da diddley qua qua?

That's a touch contest. Which band would score higher on the Cheesometer? The Scorpions or Adam and the Ants?

touch contest = "tough" contest.

Sorry. A "touch contest" is something completely different. Mah bad.

Diazanon is good. Makes you really sick if you spray it yourself. Doesn't matter, you just think about all those scorpions dying. I'm in Texas in a country place and have had a long fight with the little &&%$#'s.

they might be in wet places, maybe on clothes on the clothesline, maybe dropping out of the ceiling....get one of those drapes that cover your bed.

Have awakened in the middle of the night to find the cats following one across the floor....heart attack.

The really poisonous straw-colored ones don't live in Texas. The ones that could kill you.

They're gone now. Between me and Diazanon and the Orkin man. For a while.

They've actually got a new album out, not a remix or "Greatest Hits." Haven't heard it but love my "Greatest Hits" CD. I usually crank up the volume to 11 when "No One But You" comes on.

That woman thinks 32 days is a record, she oughta be here in North Texas; she's just years and years from our record!

At least the little black deadly ones don't seem to live around here.
