Major Garrett Reports: Kerry Campaign Inches Away From First Purple Heart Wound
Monday, August 23, 2004 | Kristinn

Posted on 08/23/2004 5:26:39 PM PDT by kristinn

Several FReepers have posted that Major Garrett of Fox News reported tonight that the Kerry campaign has taken a tiny step back from John Kerry's first Purple Heart earning wound.

He referred to Kerry's journal entry nine days after he was "wounded in combat" where he writes of patrolling the rivers with the cockiness of someone who hasn't faced enemy fire.

In response, the Kerry spokesman told him that it was possible the wound (from a sliver of shrapnel)was unintentionally self-inflicted.

Kingattax mentioned it here.

Cbolt confirmed it here.

Federal mentioned it here.

This is a major development in the story. Kerry had to back off his Christmas in Cambodia tales after the Swiftees challenged him, now it looks like Kerry's ready to concede his first Purple Heart wasn't earned like he said it was.

This was reported once or twice before.......that the diaries mention that they are cocky because they hadn't been shot at yet.

This was days AFTER Kerry received his first purple heart.

Brinkley ignores the dates and simply reports the comments in the diary. By ignoring the date he is covering Kerry's lie about earning the purple heart.

That means they are admitting that Kerry left Vietnam under fraudulent reasons.

WOW!

Maybe they feel safe now since Bob Dole supposedly self-inflicted one of his PHs.

I seriously doubt the Kerry campaign will back down about that first Purple Heart. They'll just keep repeating the same lies about Kerry in Vietnam. And the mass media will help propagate them.

No. It was on Fox News a couple times. Presumably others in the media watch them (at least the smart ones.)

Maybe this has something to do with the enigmatic Robert Novak comment on Capital Gang on Saturday. Al Hunt was spewing his venom, accusing the Swiftvets of lying. He mentioned Kerry's first purple heart and said the Swiftees lied when they said it wasn't earned in a combat situation and that no one could prove otherwise. Novak pointedly told him to be careful, and hinted that someone might well soon appear who could prove otherwise. I don't remember the exact words, but that's in general what was said. Novak seemed to know about something. Maybe the Kerry Klowns know it, too, and are preparing to change their story in advance to lessen the impact.

Thanks for the bump. I heard it too. It came out rather matter-of-factly.

After a few of Kerry's fabrications are admitted to be such, we'll be onto the "not a big deal" "everybody did/does it" defense. BUT, that defense doesn't address his actions after the war.

The book states that no one knows who signed for the first Purple Heart. Dr. Elliot says he did not. Has anyone heard anything that indicates who signed for it?

Chris Wallace was on O'Reilly. It was hard to tell which was carrying the water for the Kerry kool-aide fountain.

Wallace basically concluded that most of the stories favor Kerry.

But, the Kerry camp seems to be backtracking on the first PH. And the Kerry camp seems to have conceded that Kerry never was in Cambodia. And the Kerry Bronze Star has come under scrutiny.

Kerry's war service seems to be a house of cards built specifically for his political opportunism. And it is developing some serious gaps in validity and credibility.

How many gaps before the media recognizes them as outright lies? How many lies before the media recognizes that Kerry is a political opportunist with shallow plans and little substance?

There have been so many clarifications as to the heroic rescue of Rassmann I am beginning to wonder if the man was ever in Viet Nam.

He was in Kerry's boat.

He was in a different boat.

All the boats left and only Kerry came back for him.

Kerry was the only boat that left and then he returned for Rassmann.

Rassmann said he was all alone in the water being shot at and only the fact that Kerry came back is why he's alive.

Kerry dove into the water to rescue Rassmann.

The only consistent fact is that Rassmann was eating a chocolate chip cookie when he fell overboard.

From the looks of him, he's been eating too many chocolate chip cookies.

It's becoming more and more obvious why he won't release his military/medical records.

And, why he's taken some of his "proof" down from his site.

Actually, an accidentally self-inflicted wound can earn you a purple heart if it happens in the heat of combat. Like, if you throw a grenade at enemy combatants and it bounces off something, blows up near you, and wounds you, you can still get a purple heart. But you can't if the self-inflicted wound occurs in a non-combat situation.

The charge against Kerry is that two of his purple hearts were awarded for non-combat accidental self inflicted wounds.

This was reported once or twice before.......that the diaries mention that they are cocky because they hadn't been shot at yet.

This is different. The report was that the Kerry camp had ADMITTED (intimated as a recent admission, but you might be right, on reflection; although Garrett didn't clarify, and came off as though it was a recent admission) the 1st PH may have been self-inflicted.

The first line of defense will be that the award is still justified because there was battle, but that can't fly becuase there is no SITREP. Fore reference, this is the award that Hibbard turned down, and Kerry put in via a different chain of command three months later. We still don't know the chain of command for this award, those papers have not been released.

What really chaps me about Kerry's ridiculously-short stint in 'Nam is that my father-in-law, a truly honorable and good man, had to put his life on the line for 2 years while Kerry took the pansy route out.

Come to think of it, my father-in-law is more fit for the office of the President than Kerry, and Ron doesn't have so much as one year of political experience!

Suggest that everyone who missed it tune in for the replay at midnight EST and see it for yourself. It will come on shortly after the newscast begins.

I heard it on my XM radio on the way home. It was at the very end of Major Garret's report during the Brit Hume show. Around the 5pm to 5:15pm slot CST IIRC.

Big WOW from me in the car when I heard that. I think he used the term "self inflicted" wound. We need a transcript.

Not sure if it was the first PH, but for one of them, supposedly a medic, not the station doctor, signed the paperwork.

I am only commenting on the fact that Kerry had received a purple heart BEFORE he wrote in his diary that they were cocky because they hadn't been shot at.

The story I heard was that Brinkley deliberately left out the dates because they would have proved that Kerry didn't earn the first purple heart.
