Several FReepers have posted that Major Garrett of Fox News reported tonight that the Kerry campaign has taken a tiny step back from John Kerry's first Purple Heart earning wound.
He referred to Kerry's journal entry nine days after he was "wounded in combat" where he writes of patrolling the rivers with the cockiness of someone who hasn't faced enemy fire.
In response, the Kerry spokesman told him that it was possible the wound (from a sliver of shrapnel)was unintentionally self-inflicted.
Kingattax mentioned it here.
Cbolt confirmed it here.
Federal mentioned it here.
This is a major development in the story. Kerry had to back off his Christmas in Cambodia tales after the Swiftees challenged him, now it looks like Kerry's ready to concede his first Purple Heart wasn't earned like he said it was.
FYI.
Why would they do this? Did Hillary tell them to?
This was days AFTER Kerry received his first purple heart.
Brinkley ignores the dates and simply reports the comments in the diary. By ignoring the date he is covering Kerry's lie about earning the purple heart.
IT HAS BEGUN! The "clarifications" and "explanations."
WOW!
Have you emailed this to anyone yet?
Maybe they feel safe now since Bob Dole supposedly self-inflicted one of his PHs.
No. It was on Fox News a couple times. Presumably others in the media watch them (at least the smart ones.)
This was pointed out by a FReeper on FR last week.
I thought Brinkley wasn't giving up the diaries?
No wonder the media is attacking Bush so hard about this.
Well, I wonder if Chrissy Matthews will apologize to Michelle Malkin.
Wait a minute if he didn't earn all three...then he wasn't qualified for his Early Out of 'Nam....so can we send him back to serve out the rest of his term in Nam?
Maybe this has something to do with the enigmatic Robert Novak comment on Capital Gang on Saturday. Al Hunt was spewing his venom, accusing the Swiftvets of lying. He mentioned Kerry's first purple heart and said the Swiftees lied when they said it wasn't earned in a combat situation and that no one could prove otherwise. Novak pointedly told him to be careful, and hinted that someone might well soon appear who could prove otherwise. I don't remember the exact words, but that's in general what was said. Novak seemed to know about something. Maybe the Kerry Klowns know it, too, and are preparing to change their story in advance to lessen the impact.

Take THAT Chrissy.
Look...
Barnes and Noble have just come out with a statement re: Unfit For Command".....$$$$ talks and they want a piece of the action! Surprise, surprise!!!
The pendalum is swinging.
keep waiting
After a few of Kerry's fabrications are admitted to be such, we'll be onto the "not a big deal" "everybody did/does it" defense. BUT, that defense doesn't address his actions after the war.
Matthews refers to her as "a Michelle Malkin, or something"
The book states that no one knows who signed for the first Purple Heart. Dr. Elliot says he did not. Has anyone heard anything that indicates who signed for it?
I figure he owes me 240 more days of active duty. How many is that after interest over 34 years?
Do you remember who??
He was in Kerry's boat.
He was in a different boat.
All the boats left and only Kerry came back for him.
Kerry was the only boat that left and then he returned for Rassmann.
Rassmann said he was all alone in the water being shot at and only the fact that Kerry came back is why he's alive.
Kerry dove into the water to rescue Rassmann.
The only consistent fact is that Rassmann was eating a chocolate chip cookie when he fell overboard.
From the looks of him, he's been eating too many chocolate chip cookies.
It's becoming more and more obvious why he won't release his military/medical records.
And, why he's taken some of his "proof" down from his site.
Actually, an accidentally self-inflicted wound can earn you a purple heart if it happens in the heat of combat. Like, if you throw a grenade at enemy combatants and it bounces off something, blows up near you, and wounds you, you can still get a purple heart. But you can't if the self-inflicted wound occurs in a non-combat situation.
The charge against Kerry is that two of his purple hearts were awarded for non-combat accidental self inflicted wounds.
This is different. The report was that the Kerry camp had ADMITTED (intimated as a recent admission, but you might be right, on reflection; although Garrett didn't clarify, and came off as though it was a recent admission) the 1st PH may have been self-inflicted.
The first line of defense will be that the award is still justified because there was battle, but that can't fly becuase there is no SITREP. Fore reference, this is the award that Hibbard turned down, and Kerry put in via a different chain of command three months later. We still don't know the chain of command for this award, those papers have not been released.
Come to think of it, my father-in-law is more fit for the office of the President than Kerry, and Ron doesn't have so much as one year of political experience!
I saw it, too, on Special Report with Brit Hume at 6 pm EST. I was shocked!
Suggest that everyone who missed it tune in for the replay at midnight EST and see it for yourself. It will come on shortly after the newscast begins.
I heard it on my XM radio on the way home. It was at the very end of Major Garret's report during the Brit Hume show. Around the 5pm to 5:15pm slot CST IIRC.
Big WOW from me in the car when I heard that. I think he used the term "self inflicted" wound. We need a transcript.
Not sure if it was the first PH, but for one of them, supposedly a medic, not the station doctor, signed the paperwork.
The story I heard was that Brinkley deliberately left out the dates because they would have proved that Kerry didn't earn the first purple heart.
No, this appeared to be a report of an admission today, by the Kerry campaign. Not just reading the books and pointing out the discrepancies.
Hey, 'Nam is so 70's, man.
Off to Iraq with him!
He could do it so much better than GWB, dontcha know?
This is not news to Old Friend either.
Seems to me he's AWOL! Missing for 240 days!
The "news" then is the admission by the the Kerry camp?
Can't wait to see the media scramble to cover this one.
Scramble to cover it up, that is.
BUMP
The medic signed the paperwork for the treatment of the wound. Who signed the paperwork awarding the Purple Heart?
#34..I too heard "self inflicted" and immediately thought of Michelle Malkin.
Bttt.
Don't hold your breath kristinn. They're falling all over each other trying to put a spin on this whole sorted mess.(In Kerry's favor of course). Rush is right when he says that the liar of a two-sided story is the one who starts changing it. (Paraphrasing).
I love your zingers! Kerry heroically leaned over the rail (?) and helped him climb aboard. Musta hurt real bad w/that bruise on his arm.
Yes, if in fact there is one. It was one passing comment, at least that is all I witnessed.
Hey, a boo boo is a boo boo.
