The Scott Peterson murder trial
Court TV ^ | 8/23/04 | Beth Karas

The Scott Peterson murder trial

Court TV Host: Beth Karas is here with us now to discuss the first day of Amber Frey's cross-examination in the murder trial of Scott Peterson. Welcome, Beth. Thanks for being our guest today!

Beth Karas: Hi everyone. I just left the courtroom. Amber is back tomorrow for more cross.

Court TV Host: Beth, you thought earlier today that today might be the only day of cross -- what's likely to happen tomorrow?

Beth Karas: The judge was hoping that her cross would finish today. Wishful thinking. Geragos is in the midst of questioning the calls to and from Scott in January and whether Amber would call the police immediately after a call. There were calls with Scott, apparently, on January 14 but the phone records don't show a call from her to the police. She is holding firm that she never had a conversation with Scott that she didn't report to the police. Scott is looking at Amber but there is a huge computer monitor on the defense table that appears to partially obscure his view of her. She doesn't look at him.

Question from wendy: How is amber doing on cross?.........

Lust, not love affair, the defense insists Packed courtroom hears a careful cross-examination

Amber Frey was nothing more than Scott Peterson's good-time girl, and she knew it, a defense lawyer tried to show Monday during the fertilizer salesman's double-murder trial in Redwood City.

Within the first two hours of their first date in late November 2002, Peterson made it clear to the massage therapist that he wouldn't be available to her from Thanksgiving until February, but she slept with him that night anyway, she acknowledged during the first day of cross-examination.

Deputy District Attorneys Rick Distaso and Dave Harris say Peterson became so enamored with Frey that he killed his eight-months-pregnant wife, Laci, so he could be with the Fresno woman. But Peterson's lawyer, Mark Geragos, argues that Frey was no motive for murder. .........

REDWOOD CITY -- Mark Geragos' challenge today: Cross-examining a witness who, instead of testifying, largely sat in court for five days while the jury heard hours of phone calls she secretly recorded.

That's what Scott Peterson's attorney will face, when -- barring another delay in the death-penalty trial -- he confronts star prosecution witness Amber Frey.

Heat is on Amber at Laci murder trial

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The lawyer for Scott Peterson tried to portray Peterson's ex-mistress yesterday as a suspicious woman who turned police informant to punish Peterson for lying to her. The much-awaited cross-examination of Amber Frey began with several revelations.

At one point, Frey, 29, admitted to defense attorney Mark Geragos that when she went to Modesto police to inform them of her affair, she offered to pretend she was pregnant with Scott's baby to try to get more information from him.

Geragos tried to highlight a possible jealous nature by focusing on as many as 75 phone calls Frey had with police officer friend Richard Byrd beginning three weeks before Peterson's pregnant wife disappeared two years ago.

The blond masseuse conceded she had several long talks about Peterson with Byrd........

AMBER HAMMERED

By HOWARD BREUER

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 24, 2004 -- REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Scott Peterson's lawyer yesterday brutally portrayed his client's ex-mistress as a woman scorned who would stop at nothing to try to help cops nail him in his wife's murder — even by lying to him that she was pregnant with his baby.

Lawyer Mark Geragos also blasted sexy blond masseuse Amber Frey on the witness stand by suggesting she's simply a desperate, jealousy-driven, drunken floozy.

"You told them [Modesto cops] you had sex with Scott on at least three occasions out of the four or five times you were with him, and that one of these times you had unprotected sex, right?" Geragos asked.

"At that point, I was willing or open . . . to assisting the police any way I could help," Frey responded.

The exchange came as newly released police reports revealed details of Frey's conversation with cops Dec. 30, 2002 — six days after Peterson's pregnant wife, Laci, was reported missing from their Modesto home........

Geragos had to have extra time to have others prep him on how to question Amber.

Amber's character is irrelevant -- the tapes speak for themselves.

As for motive, I never thought Amber was the entire motive, just a part of it -- perhaps even a small part. Scott has been revealed as a sociopath and sociopaths are quite capable of killing if it suits them. In fact, the prosecution does not even need to prove motive although it helps their case.

I just wish the shows would have talking heads who aren't fawning over Geragos and who won't insult the viewers with their stupid comments.

Yes but wouldn't you agree considering where these jurors live they are not exactly shocked at permissive sexual attitudes.

BTW...I think having an affair on your pregnant wife and continuing to call your mistress after your pregnant wife goes "missing" is more immoral than anything Amber Frey did.

Amber was a symptom....The giddy call he made"from near the Eiffel Tower in Paris" 15 minutes before the vigil for Laci a week after her disappearance indeed sounded like he was celebrating...not new Years Eve in Paris but the FREEDOM from responsibility of a wife and soon to be born son..He's a psychopathic narcissist.

Someone on Websleuths had a great idea: the jury should stand up and say firmly, "Not Guilty". Then, as soon as the blubbering and hugging btw Scott, his family, and Pickle-nose has died down a bit, they should say, "Just kidding. Guilty as charged."

Absolutely. His appalling lack of concern about the whereabouts of his supposed beloved wife and child is more damning than a confession.

With his level of narcissism, he didn't need to be "in love" with anyone to murder his family - just needed to find the family inconvenient.

The defense must find the timeline pretty damning, or they wouldn't be putting out lies to try (yet again) to widen it.

As you know, there was some question about whether the cell tower which picked up Scott's call at 10:08 was really the cell tower closest to him.

I just read something by a telecommunications guy on WS. He said that notwithstanding the supposed bouncing of one's signal from tower to tower, even when one is not traveling, the fact is that the tower which first picks up your signal is the tower closest to you. That means Scott's 10:08 call can still be placed--and the placement still has him within minutes of his home.

Also, there is even more reason to wonder what LACI was doing at, say, 10:00. After all, she had to go outside to get "abducted", since it is very obvious from the evidence that she wasn't kidnapped from inside her house.

Laci's favorite show was Martha Stewart. Martha Stewart didn't end until 10:00. Surely after watching at least 48 minutes of her favorite show, she watched the last 10 minutes.

That would leave us with 18 minutes for the big "abduction". Yeah, right.

Another point that raises questions is that the postman said McKenzie didn't bark at him as usual. The postman passed by their house btw 10:30--10:50.

Maybe McKenzie didn't bark b/c he sensed that his mistress was not in the house to be warned/protected. And we know his master wasn't there.

My mother once noticed that our dog had gotten used to the meter man, and no longer barked at him. However, on the few occasions when she would open the back door and speak to the meter man, the dog would start barking furiously. Dogs know more than we give them credit for. There was no one at home to be protected, so McKenzie felt no need to bark at the postman that day.

And one other thing about McKenzie. How often do we travel on a highway and see abandoned dogs by the side of the road? I was always concerned with how these dogs would be right there by the busy road. I was told that the dogs stayed near there b/c they thought the rotten scumbag people who abandoned them would come back for them. For dogs, hope springs eternal.

So if McKenzie's leash was ripped out of Laci's hand (yeah, right), or if she dropped his leash (yeah, right) and Laci was whisked away in some way where the dog couldn't follow, he'd have stayed near the place where she left him, at least for a while. Leaving even less time for him to appear in the street in front of his house, standing there confused.

Morning Dev, I saw your hello on the other thread.
Been sooo busy at the new school, kids started today.
Things should start slowing down to a steady pace for me by the end of this week. The school I'm at now is K-thru third grade, with a classroom full of Early Childhood kids. (3 and 4 year olds)
The little ones are so adorable, I' thrilled to be back with them! The intermediate building I was at before was getting a little old for me, the kids are a little bit more mischievous at that age. I have some catch up to do on the threads!!

IMHO, both of them are slime.

What Mother would leave her 2 month old baby to go to a bar, meet a guy, take him home and have sex with him?

Ditto for Scott Peterson and his calls to Frey while his wife was missing.

I am sick and tired of hearing about the Lacy Peterson trial and hearing their "theme song" on Fox!

I am not downplaying the serious nature of finding who killed Lacy, but quite frankly, the MSM, including Fox and CNN, give more time to this melodrama than to the War on Terror and the men and women serving our Country in Iraq.

How did our priorities get so screwed up?

It makes no difference what Amber is. She probably wouldn't even be testifying in this case, were it not for the tapes. The tapes are the real witnesses here, and they can't be cross-examined or changed by anything Amber might or might not say. Scott's words stand on their own, and there isn't a thing Geragos can do about them.

Good point. We have seen much discussion in the past, with Amber being tried and convicted by many. She is what she is. She did what she did. And thank God, literally, she cooperated by coming forward and agreeing to tape these calls. I would hope that would "rehabilitate her" in some folks' eyes.

MizSterious also made a good point, "The tapes are the real witnesses here, and they can't be cross-examined or changed by anything Amber might or might not say."
