YOUNGSTOWN, OH - Earlier today Mayor George McKelvey, Democratic mayor of Youngstown, Ohio, announced his endorsement of President George W. Bush in his reelection bid. At a press conference in Youngstown, McKelvey was joined by Bush-Cheney 04 Ohio Valley Regional Chair Jo Ann Davidson and said that as a Democrat he is proud to work toward President Bushs reelection in November. "Although I have never publicly endorsed a presidential candidate, the significance of this election - an election which I view as the most important of my lifetime - has motivated me to acknowledge my support for President Bush. "I support President Bushs proactive approach to the war on terror. He has demonstrated the strong leadership necessary to strengthen our national security. He understands that the war on terror is a war we must win to protect our freedom, for our children, grand children and great grandchildren. "I support President Bush because I believe that our economy is experiencing a recovery, and that it will continue to improve. It is unfair, at best, to blame President Bush for the devastating impact 9-11 had on the American marketplace. Furthermore, I cannot agree with those who criticize a tax policy which allows the American people to keep more of their own money, allowing them, not the government, to decide how to best spend their money," McKelvey said. He continued, "Senator Kerry reminds me of the traditional politician who will say anything you want to hear to get elected
This Democrat is proud to call President Bush his friend, and honored to have the opportunity to work with him on his reelection as president of the United States of America."
THIS IS GREAT NEWS!
Support for Bush from the People's Republic of Greater Youngstown.
I find it oddly pleasant to see so many Democrats bailing on Kerry. Zell Miller, Ed Koch, and now McKelvey. Any others?
There is the mayor of St. Paul. (I do not know his name). I think it is especially cool that some of these are from battleground states.
Real flesh and blood prominent Democrats. The only Republicans I hear about supporting Kerry are people I've never heard of before who say they are "life long Republicans, but ....."

Charlie McDonald (D-LA), Louisiana Democrats for Bush Chairman, issued the following statement on John Edwards' visit to Louisiana: "John Kerry says Democrats make a 'mistake' in looking to the South for votes, but Southern Democrats aren't going to make the mistake of looking to John Kerry. Kerry doesn't have much credibility in the South after telling rural voters that he represents their 'conservative values' despite being ranked the Senate's most out-of-the-mainstream member, and Kerry isn't taking us seriously considering his decision to stop competing in Louisiana. "Kerry and his running mate both voted for... |

"George Bush and I do not agree on a lot of issues," Kelly said in a statement. "But in turbulent times, what the American people need more than anything is continuity of government, even with some imperfect policies." Kelly, who said he's remaining a Democrat, said the economy is going in the right direction. "There's no reason to believe a change of course will produce better or quicker results," he said. And the mayor said the United States... |

The attacks on September 11, the killing of innocent civilians, the vicious hatred of America by the perpetrators, the danger of nuclear weapons falling into the hands of those who would do us great harm given half the chance - all demonstrate how much is at stake. I could swear not too long ago the pundits were saying they knew of no Democrats/Gore voters that would be voting for G.W. in this election. Guess their list of acquaintances is a short one.
This is EXCELLENT news. Many many dims coming out in support of President Bush.
My continued prayers for President Bush and his cabinet that they will continue to take the high ground and let the others see who is a leader in this election.
These Democratic Pols that keep supporting Bush for President really makes me wonder if they are truly in the right party. Everything that man said goes against everything the Dimocrap party is today.
Maybe he should switch.
I am telling you New Mexican Demos are going to vote for Bush. I have heard it from many of the Spanish out there in the land of enchantment.
No to mention I believe the Jacksonville, FL Mayor endorsed Bush and I believe he is a democrat
He would, but if you know anything about the PROY (People's Republic of Youngstown) you'll understand. He'd suddenly become unelectable. That town is the most heavily-Democratic part of Ohio.
Jim Traficant was from there.
ahhh I see
There are certain cities, like Youngstown, OH, Pittsburgh, PA and Philadelphia, PA, where it doesn't matter what you believe or who you are, you won't be elected without the "D" next to your name on the ballot and you will lose with the "R" there. That is why there are some conservative Democrats in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. For example, look at Frank Rizzo, who was elected Mayor of Philadelphia as a Democrat but couldn't really come close as a Republican.
In any case, Mayor McKelvey is a brave man who deserves all of the credit in the world for taking this stand.
I am from the Peoples Republic of Youngstown and I am amazed that McKelvey took the pro-Bush stance. The Neanderthal thinking Democrat followers here would vote for Genghis Khan for president as long as he had a "D" next to his name.
Local political columnist Bertram de Souza had an interesting article in last Sunday's Vindicator. Entitled "If Only Valley Voters Had Listened" where he chided the locals for electing an incompetent boob named Tim Ryan (with a "D" after his name,of course) over Republican candidate Ann Womer Benjamin. The voters, as de Souza pointed out, " were true to political form. They ignored her ( Benjamin's) common-sense approach to politics and, instead, backed a lightweight."
Youngstown continues on its path to self-destruction, electing incompetent Democrats because "that's the way we were raised to vote."
I live in Akron, but Tim Ryan is, unfortunately also my Rep since the lines were redrawn last time around.
"that's the way we were raised to vote."
That explains a lot of the Democrat voters around here who, to talk to them, would come across as conservative - pro-military, anti-tax, anti-abortion...but vote D every time.
Another Democrat steps forward to endorse the President. Yes, friends there are more 9/11 Democrats in this country than you can imagine.
