In their first acknowledgment of the expense of the Cisco Systems contract scandal, San Jose officials said Tuesday that the construction schedule of the new City Hall has been delayed months and the new costs may top $3 million.
City Manager Del Borgsdorf delivered his long-awaited report about what went wrong and who was responsible for the scandal to the city council Tuesday. In it, he told city leaders that the need to seek new bids for the building's $8 million computer and phone network will necessitate a complicated and expensive set of fixes.
Rather than idle its construction crews, San Jose will allow them to build most of the walls and ceilings in the new City Hall before the network is purchased. Then those crews will rip out -- and later repair -- tiles and drywall to install the computer equipment sometime next spring.
Depending on how long that process takes, the delays could throw into jeopardy the city's plans for moving 1,800 employees to the building next June.
Borgsdorf told the city council that he had also completed a personnel investigation into the botched deal and had demoted a senior city official who was in charge of making sure city contracts are designed fairly.
