Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry called today for Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign and urged President George Bush to appoint an independent group to recommend reforms after a report faulted all levels of the military for abuse at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
Its not just the little person at the bottom who ought to pay the price of responsibility, Kerry said at a Philadelphia union hall. The buck doesnt stop at the Pentagon.
A report released yesterday by an independent panel led by former Defence Secretary James Schlesinger concluded that senior US military leaders in Iraq and the Pentagon could be faulted for inattention to prisoner abuses, but it did not recommend that Rumsfeld step down.
What is missing from all these reports is accountability from the senior civilian leaders in the Pentagon and in the White House, Kerry said.
From the bottom of the chain of command all the way to the top, there needs to be accountability. The Schlesinger report makes clear that Secretary Rumsfeld was responsible for setting a climate where these types of abuses could occur.
Kerry said an independent investigation should review the decision-making process that led to the abuses and provide comprehensive reforms to ensure abuses do not recur.
The time has come for our commander in chief to take charge, he said.

"Look how well I can salute. Rumsfeld can't do that."
Then I suppose he should quit for the war crimes he admitted committing.
Yo Ketchupman, trying to change the subject away from your lying, traitorous past and present actions, huh?
What happened at Abu Ghraib is secondary to the prosecution of the war effort. Why Mr. Kerry would want to derail our war effort just to make a few brownie points on the Abu Ghraib controversy is beyond me.
Pathetic.
If I cared at all for him, I would be embarassed for him.
How long does Rumsfeld have if the Americans are foolish enough to elect its royal highness Terrorayza as co-president? A few months?
And if he resigns today, that will make a difference, how??
Yes, lets trump up Abu Ghraib again, keep beating those drums.
Perhaps you can cover what a lying, boasting, bloviating braggart you are.
I'm sure Kerry would distort the military records, just like he did in 'Nam.
"Rumsfeld asked officers in Iraq to think of the funnest ways to torture prisoners."
Quick, somebody post the Aw Jeez guy. At least the Grab an Arab guards didn't cut off ears and heads and zap people's genitals, Mr. Kerry--remember the stuff you witnessed and participated in in Vietnam. What a schmuck.
So much Washington "theater", much like the useless 9/11 Commission.
Senator, the voters of America want you to step down
In fact, being a US Senator at the time of the Abu Ghraib incident, Kerry is also partially responsible. He should resign and decline any other public office.
What happened at Abu Graih amounted to hazing. The fodder Kerry gave the North Vietnamese during his 1971 testimony before the Sen. FR Comm. amounted to treason.
calling the stone cold pot black? Gad, is that Politically Incorrect? --------------------------------

As Kerry selfs destructs, can anyone tell me if there has ever been a presidential nominee who fled the country prior to the general election, or will this be a first?
Funniest thing to me about all of Kerry's latest "issues", there are no, I mean no, other elected Dems backing him up.
At least I haven't heard or seen any.
Cleland doesn't count because he's not an elected Dem anymore. Podesta doesn't count. Donna Brazille or Carville don't count.
I'm talking folks like "deeply saddened Tommy", or Big Teddy, even Hillary or Billary. Nobody around seems to be echoing Kerry's sentiments or delusions. He seems isolated from his party.
He may be the first with a horde of Rats to follow.
Kerry must be falling like a rock in their internal polling. They have smacked of desparation for two plus days now.
BTW, the commision that released the report said it would be terrible for the country if the defense secretary resigned over this.

"I witnessed that Rumsfeld had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of Iraq in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country."
I listened to the audio and Kerry called for someone named " Rumsfelt " to resign.
Sure, It was Gen George Marshalls fault Gen Patton slapped a soldier. Roosevelt should have fire the entire defense department? Kerry is such a Mooooooran.
Ah ha ... Pied Piper Kerry.
I envision this guy having a very solitary future. After the Heinz heiress dumps him what's left Kennedy?
They didn't think, "I love this guy." Instead, they merely thought he was the most electable. Of course, they had barely heard his speaking, his bagpipe drone of a voice.
The time has come for our commander in chief to take charge, he said
Yeah, Arrest Kerry for war crimes.
The time has come for our commander in chief to take charge, he said
Yeah, Arrest Kerry for war crimes.
Force of habit.
How about, I call for Kerry to quit because he's stupid? Would it carry any more meaning or be just an opinion?
WASHINGTON (AP) John Kerry said Thursday 2/05/04 his intervention on a legislative matter that affected the nation's most expensive highway project had nothing to do with an insurer who benefited from his action and later gave him tens of thousands of dollars in donations.
The Big Dig Scandal, Boston, cost overrun, 12 billion dollars. Where is this investigation. Why has Kerry not been asked to step down.
OPs4 God BLess America!
That's ironic, because the report specifically states ' that Rumsfeld had NOTHING to do with it'!
On second thought......FREE SLOBO!!!!!
this is nothing but a feeble attempt to change the focus to the iraq prison "scandal" and away from kerry's implosion
He'd like that. Another 9/11 committee-type kangaroo hearing where the media can salivate and run naked picture after naked picture.
I'm calling for sKerry to STFU.
This actually ties into a radio news report by, I think, ABC, that says the report on Abu Ghraib assigned guilt and involvement to the highest levels of command, including Rumsfeld.
I'm not kidding. The news announcer actually said that.
It was a Marxian Slip.
He has been living a lie and it is finally catching up with him. What he is doing is steaming up Americans by displaying his unbelievable childish immaturity (a characteristic of most libs)Ole Lantern face is doing more to destroy himself than anyone I have ever seen. The more you see him, the more you hate him. I used to see quite a few Ketchup Boy B stickers here in NOVA but they seem to be going away. I wonder why? (snicker >:-)
I am pretty sure that he always lets his pinky stick out a little, like a proper teacup holder. That is not a part of any military salute that I know of. I will look for more salute pictures to see if any other examples exist.
Damn this POS.........They try an toss GI's in jail that put panties on the head of an enemy and yet promote this trash mouth self confessed war criminal traitor as presidential !
Doom on Kerry and his trolls !
and Chode calls for jean phouqin keri to resign from the senate for missing 80% of his job his call and $5.00 will get that POS a cup of coffee at $tarbuck$ too!!!
In the tactical world, this is called a "diversion"! He is firing for effect! The glib lib media will be on this one!
So if Rumy has to resign, I guess Jf'nK will have to turn himself in for all those self-confessed war crimes??
Great hair--I think that man would make a great president someday.
OH and dont forget our beloved harry reid ,he has been real quiet ,up for reelection meez thinks.
As I recall, Kerry did not call for Clark Clifford's resignation in 1969.
I wonder why...
Nor did Kerry call for William Cohen's resignation in 2000, when those GIs raped a Japanese civilian.
I wonder why...
Somebody should be asking Kerry just such questions. Too bad the media is MIA.
Thank you. I think Aw Jeez is going to be paged more and more as November gets closer.
