"I actually expected him to do something like that. Bush has a knack for killing 'em with kindness. He then could have come out and said, "We had a great conversation. As I've said many times, I believe Sen. Kerry served with distinction and I again call on him in joining me to put a stop to all 527 ads.""

The problem with that is...there is nothing wrong with any of these ads. Bush is wrong to condemn 527 ads. He was wrong to sign the McCain-Feingold bill into law. The USSC was wrong to uphold it.

CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW ABRIDGING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!

Sounds like Kerry is still in the 70s. Kinda sick.

Why don't you fax this to the swift boat vets and Brit Hume?

I would have had Bob Dole waiting to accept the letter.

Or better yet, how bout Alice Cooper? Wouldn't that send the right message?

Whew - no problem. I only got worried because the Kerry campaign would have slammed the use of the SecServ like that.

"Well, Kerri should have been man enough to deliver it himself instead of sending Cleland."

True enough, but there's no way the MSM is going to make that point.

If you want to understand how this is going to be covered, take a look at the photo we already have. Certainly they could have shot Cleland from the other side. The could easily have shown Cleland in the process of handing the letter with his good arm, cropped only to reveal the two men and the letter exchange. The fact that the cameraman has been positioned in this way, using a wide lens to encompass all of Cleland's disability telegraphs how the story is going to be covered by a mile. Conservatives have got to stop thinking that if we just make a dramatic enough presentation, people will have to accept it and finally, finally print the truth.

The entire characterization of American Servicemen in Vietnam has never been anything but a lie. The entire history of Soviet involvement with the American left has never been anything but a lie. The entire story of American history, rendered by politically correct multiculturalists has never been anything but a lie. And the real truth behind these lies has always been known by anyone with a free mind who has actually bothered to examine the facts.

Right wingers need to grow up and face it: In an all-out war, you must never expect the enemy to provide you with a favorable characterization. Never. Never. Never. Stop looking for love in the wrong places.

Sorry Gulliver, I'm trying to figure out how to use animations and I'm not even close :)
Just ignore.

A freeperhas a better answer to your point than I would have come up with:

I actually expected him to do something like that. Bush has a knack for killing 'em with kindness. He then could have come out and said, "We had a great conversation. As I've said many times, I believe Sen. Kerry served with distinction and I again call on him in joining me to put a stop to all 527 ads."

Bush had a welcoming party ready -- the only media outlet that reported it was Foxnews.com:

Jerry Patterson, the Texas state land commissioner and a U.S. Marine who served in 1972-73, greeted the duo and handed back to Cleland and Rassmann a letter for Kerry signed by Reps. Duncan Hunter, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee; Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif., who spent 21 years in the Navy and Sam Johnson, R-Texas, who spent 28 years in the Air Force. Others who signed the letter are Robert O'Malley and James Fleming, who both received Medals of Honor for their service in the Marine Corps during Vietnam, retired Lt. Col. Richard Castle and Lt. Gen. Dave Palmer, a former superintendent at West Point. Officials said the two men were to be invited into the staff compound at the president's ranch and offered a discussion with Palmer and Patterson.

Patterson claims that Cleland refused to give him the Democrats' letter to Bush.

The letter from the president's supporters says Kerry can not claim to be a war hero while also claiming that he and his crewmates committed atrocities against the Vietnamese people. They also caution him against trying to silence his critics.

"You can't have it both ways. You can't build your convention and much of your campaign around your service in Vietnam, and then try to say that only those veterans who agree with you have a right to speak up. There is no double standard for our right to free speech. We all earned it."

The letter from the "Bush supporters" was obviously handed out to reporters beforehand, since one of the reporters repeated the bolded paragraph above verbatim to Cleland, and asked him if the swift boat vets had a "right to free speech." Cleland, of course, didn't answer that question, but said something to the affect that "someone (meaning Bush) who didn't serve in Vietnam has no right to criticize those who did."

Another reporter asked Cleland why Kerry had asked him to do this today, when yesterday Kerry said he wanted to focus on the issues, not his Vietnam record. Another frothing-at-the mouth non-answer by Cleland followed.

After Cleland left, Patterson stepped up to the mike, but the reporters were more interested in who wrote the letter than in who signed it (the RNC conspiracy, of course).

Finally, an earlier version of this story on Foxnews.com reported that Cleland would be invited into a conference room on the ranch to meet with the vets who supported Bush.

Obviously, Cleland refused.

And there you have the rest of the story -- which, of course, will not be told by the MSM.

"I've had the pleasure of meeting Jerry Patterson, and he's a class act. He also was primary sponsor and chief cheerleader for the bill which became the Texas "shall issue" concealed carry law."

All well and good, but someone should ask Patterson if he'd been drinking when he accepted this "assignment."

He's demonstrated extremely poor judgement by participating in this stunt.

I've been saying all day that Kerry is really beginning to look unstable. First the Walter Mitty fantasies, then the ever evolving stories and you put that together with his irrational reaction to the Swiftboat claims and the guy looks headed for a total break down.

Wow I knew Bush wanted to invite them in, I guess that shows how small minded Cleland and the Kerry gang is, if I was Bush I would send Patterson out to all the talk shows and explain how Cleland so rudely showed up at the ranch and refused to talk about the issue inside.
