Pro-Bush vet rebuffed on letter to Kerry
Washington Times ^ | 8/25/04 | UPI

Posted on 08/25/2004 4:17:52 PM PDT by kattracks

Crawford, TX, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland Wednesday rebuffed an effort by a pro-Bush veteran to give him a letter critical of presidential hopeful John Kerry.

Cleland was met at the ranch by Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, a Republican elected official and Vietnam veteran, who tried to give the former senator a letter addressed to Kerry, accusing him of using his military service for political gain.

"You can't have it both ways," said the letter, signed by Patterson and six other veterans including two Medal of Honor recipients and a former North Vietnamese prisoner of war. "You can't build your convention and much of your campaign around your service in Vietnam, and then try to say that only those veterans who agree with you have a right to speak up. There is no double standard for our right to free speech. We all earned it."

[snip]

Cleland was not able to deliver his letter nor would he accept the letter Patterson tried to give him.

The fact that he would not exchange letters with Patterson...who the Bush folks authorized to recieve and give the letters...shows the Cleland was just pulling a political stunt.

And that's how it came off.
Cleland looked pathetic. He looks pathetic right now on Chris Matthews' show.

He keeps making far fetched charges...and it makes him lool bad.

The Kerry campaign is coming apart at the seams.

One of the nut jobs on CNN Crossfire was calling this guy a right-wing whack job because he supports the right to carry guns everywhere in Texas, and Tucker was right there yucking it up with him. Pathetic.

I hope your right. I for one now see a concerted effort on the part of the lamestream press to stovepipe all Vets against Kerry as "Karl Roves boys" and anyone on Kerrys side as honest to goodness heros of an unpopular war.

Saw a thing on Fox re: his past handling of Vietnam 'issues'. In Mass he can/could throw it back (in the manner he's doing now) with impunity and disarming the argument. Thankfully the USA is not Mass.

From what I understand, the letter stated that an aspersion cast on one veteran was an aspersion cast on them all.

Who in nether hell is running the Kerry campaign?

Are they deaf? Do they really think they can recast his 1971 testimony as that of a super patriot, a callow youth who was intemperate in his words?

This is not 1968. This is not the period before the fall of Vietnam.

What Kerry said is indefensible. It is a infamous calumny that still rings hollow after all these years.

At 28, he was man enough, apparently, to pilot a swiftboat. He cannot now state he was a youth seeking to right a wrong. For one, Vietnam as is now known through the lens of history was successful steming the flood of Communism throughout SouthEast Asia.

Kerry is a disgrace. He may have served, but he dishonored himself in his return actions and sullied the honor of many more honorable men, all in the name of a political expediency, and his future plan.

From Kerry's "The New Soldier":
Al Hubbard Sgt., 22 Troop Carrier Squadron Aug. ’65-June ’66

Emotions: Walking down the flight line at Saigon past stacks of aluminum cases containing American bodies and past stacks of aluminum luggage containing American currency. Seeing the tight, sad face of an Airman loading the bodies aboard a dirty Air Force Transport and the wide smiling face of a stewardess greeting the passengers aboard a clean Pan American Clipper Jet. Hearing a Vietnamese beg you to leave his country and an American colonel tells you to bomb his country. Hearing a Vietnamese invite you to live in his home, after the war and an American explain why you can’t live in his block, after the war. Flying over barren, brown, safe American held terrain and over lush, green unsafe enemy terrain. Feeling happy to be leaving a country in which you do not belong and sad to be returning to a country in which you are not allowed to belong. Sacrificing a portion of your consciousness so you won’t have to deal with being there and building mental blocks so you won’t have to deal with having been there.

- Al Hubbard, proven fraud who never set foot in Viet Nam. The only Vietnamese he ever met was when he was collaborating with the North Vietnamese in Paris
on the American Communist Party's nickel.
John Kerry's explanation: "He (Hubbard) simply exaggarated his particular position.
But nobody knew it at the time. And those things happen."

Patterson authored our concealed-carry law when he was in the Legislature - We hear him guesting on the radio shows occasionally, he has solid conservative credentials. Look for him to oppose RINO Comptroller Carole Keeton Strahorn Rylander for Gov. whenever Rick Perry's done.

I have heard some people speculate that Kerry wants to keep this story in the news so no one will look at his senate record. I think he is pulling a Clinton. Kerry is managing to change the focus of the story with the help of the media. No longer is the story about what Kerry did in Vietnam and if he earned his purple hearts or what happened with Rassaman. No coverage is played on the new Vets ad about Kerry's post war crap. Its all being played that this is dirty Bush politics. The same way Clinton managed to change the Monica story from lying under oath to sex. the story is the same but the focus is changed.

The "Navy Records" talking point is one that has been continually dwelled upon by the Kerry-Heads and the MSM. However, the way I understand it (and someone can correct me if I'm wrong) Kerry wrote many of the after-action reports that are now referred to as the Navy 'records.'

Exactly. And the records (i.e. military and medical) that Kerry won't release may very well contradict the navy records claimed. And the Navy records they say back him up...are not actually clear and leave more questions.

Don't worry, be happy! The VN vets have associated Kerry with Jane Fonda, so this will be forever...

Did the vets stop their stomach wrenching hate for Jane Fonda before the Kerry Purple Hearts broke? Good, now you can sleep in comfort. Not only for the VN GI's but the heros fighting for freedom in Iraq now. God bless them all!

I just read your terrible remark calling Cleland and Co. "butt sniffing dogs" to my dog, who howled in pain and insult. He said he was humiliated on his own behalf and on behalf of all other dogs that a fellow FREEPER would actually be so insensitive to degrade him to the level of that vile DemonRAT. He demands you apologize to him and all other dogs for the uncalled for insult.

I could not figure out what the hell he was talking about....was he talking about the Swift Boat Veterans right to be heard...or their 1st amendment rights to speak freely...

Nope he was telling Pres Bush to squash the SBVT and take away their right to speak..

Yet never at anytime has anyone squashed the Swift Boat Veterans for Kerry's Lies right to lie...only challenged their facts....

Cleland and Kerry both sold out the MIA POWs- news neither one want to come to the light of day...Kerry is running and Cleland wheeling SCARED....

They're in 1991 and we're in 2004. They have missed 9/11/01 or deem it unimportant.

The "new media" (of which FR is a part), are able to counter all the old media .. they just in denial and disbelief. They'll sorta get it on 11/3/04.

Al Rantel (a local radio talk show host in the Los Angeles media market) posed an interesting question tonight. He wondered why Kerry just doesn't hold a press conference, explain what he did in Vietnam, when and where and why, and then takes questions, and let it all hang out. If he is being "smeared," and just steps up to the plate, and defends himself, and takes all questions, he could put Bush away if he is telling the truth, and his traducers are spinning, speculating, and/or perhaps even lying. So the question is why he has not done that?

Why does he plot circus acts like what Cleland did in Crawford today. Why is he whinning that the Swifties are just Bushbots, marching to Bush's orders, via until today, the "fact" that the Bush campaign and the Swifties had a common lawyer (Ginsburg) advising them, apparently without the knowledge of team Bush of Ginsburg acting as a lawyer for the Swifties, per Ginsburg's comments (just like Kerry's 527 hit groups have common lawyers)? Why does he engage in a Kabuki act? Why he is he whining through surrogates, indeed sometimes whining himself, rather than just stepping up to the plate, like a man, and as Rantel said, "just let it all hang out."

In short, why has Kerry not just lanced the boil, in the most obvious and straightforward way? Why is he letting it fester? Why? Lawyers love to ask questions. Rantel loves to ask questions. We both are now asking the same question. It is a "gift.".

And when is McCain going to say something about 527's, and the monster he has created, where the incentives are to shift speech from campaigns, for which they are accountable, to outfits where there is this affectation of non-responsibility? Just one more question.

Excellent questions, Torie. I hope reporters start asking them.

As a matter of fact, Kerry seems to have less press availability than the President. I cannot remember seeing him answering questions like President Bush does, even before this controversy began. Very strange.
