Tampa Police officer threatens to kill President Bush [one fewer FL Kerry voter]
WTSP News ^ | 8/27/04 | Bill McGinty

Posted on 08/27/2004 4:37:53 PM PDT by oblomov

Tampa, Florida - Tampa police officer Joseph Mazagwu has been arrested and charged with threatening to kill President George Bush when the President was here in July.

STEVE HOGUE, Tampa Police Chief: “He apparently went in to a local business and made these comments. It was reported to another police officer and we called the Secret Service at once.”

In Federal Court today, the U.S. Atty.’s office quoted Mazagwu’s conversation with a dry cleaning employee on July 15th. Mazagwu allegedly said he wanted nothing to do with protecting the President and went on to criticize the President’s policies in both Iraq and Africa. The conversation ended with Mazagwu allegedly saying that both the President and his father, former President Bush, should be shot.

He reportedly went on to say that if he had enough bullets, he’d shoot the President in the head himself.

...one fewer FL Kerry voter...

Only if he's convicted before Election Day.

We are not being culturally sensitive to this guys opinion about Bush. Plus I find the timing of this suspicious, and its all Bush's fault anyway.

The conversation ended with Mazagwu allegedly saying that both the President and his father, former President Bush, should be shot.

If any sane liberal would have stopped there.

He reportedly went on to say that if he had enough bullets, he’d shoot the President in the head himself.

But this idiot is going to get nailed to the wall because he didn't know when to stop. Personally, I don't have a problem with the fact that some people don't like Bush (nobody gets 100% support), or even with the fact that some people wish him ill (there's always hotheads in every group), but when you come out and say "I would kill the President" you deserve to go to jail. It's unlikely that the moron would have ever done anything, but you can't let this cr*p slide.

As an aside, if he hates the President that much, how fairly do you think he treats people he pulls over with Bush/Cheney bumperstickers on their cars? Ambulance chasing lawyers across America are probably looking for conservatives pulled over by this guy so they can launch harassment suits against his department even as we speak.

Solution:

After conviction (hopefully) and subsequent sentencing, place him in "mainline" population in prison.

His former affiliation may get him some death threats of his own.

I'm going to disagree, I think saying it is okay, he should only be arrested if he actually undertook some step to accomplish it.

I do think he should be fired. I don't think any police department should employee officers that make comments that endorses breaking the law.

Negative! He broke the law by articulating those threats. Thus he was arrested. To say he should lose his job over it is a given.

I do't get it - he's a cop. What was he planning on doing with the at least 6 rounds in his pistol? "Ya know - I was gonna shoot the POTUS, but I guess I'll drink a 6-pack and shoot the empties off of fence posts."

As a LEO, I don't get the same latitude in "freedom of speech" that you do. Neither should he. Furthermore, many states have "criminal" or "terrorist" threat laws in their penal codes.

This clown is an embarassment to the badge and officers everywhere. It never ceases to amaze me how many lacking in common sense slip through the cracks to attain positions of authority. It never ceases to amaze me that the same type of people create the hiring standards and lower the qualification bar thus endangering the public and inviting lawsuits. I suspect Mazagwu was hired under less than stringent standards. I'll be working a security detail for John Kerry on Saturday. I have no doubts that some lib a**hole will ask me where I stand on the election and without a doubt this matter. Thank you Mazagwu. Well, I guess thats why I get the big bucks. Now where are all those cars with Kerry stickers? /sarc

Actually, not really.

He obviously has a mental problem. His nationality or religious leanings play no part in it.

His name sounded African of course he could have been a while African but they usually have Dutch sounding names and of course the fact that there are so many Muslims in Fla., just a fleeting thought.

Now I see he is black which also still makes me wonder if he is a follower of the Muslim Religion.

I think it should be protected up to a point. I think there must be some level of apprehension of the threat being more than words before the threat becomes criminal.

I kind of wondered if he was muslim, too. Funny, we think we can trust law enforcement, but then something like this makes you wonder if there are any muslim cops in NYC that might feel the same way about President Bush. If so, would they protect him if there were an attempt on his life? Considering the strong feelings this cop had, you just have to wonder.
