Big guns draw fire from Kennedy
Pawtucket Times ^ | 08/27/2004 | David Casey

Posted on 08/27/2004 10:05:47 PM PDT by Mr. Mojo

PROVIDENCE -- Rep. Patrick Kennedy had some strong words for President George Bush Thursday when he joined Providence Mayor David Cicilline, local politicians, law enforcement officials and anti-gun activiststo call for an extension of the 1994 assault weapons ban.

The ban prohibits the sale and importation of certain military-style, semi-automatic assault weapons and ammunition magazines with capacities over 10 rounds.

Without the president's intervention, it will expire on Sept. 13.

"The question is, will Bush honor his promise (to renew the ban)," Kennedy told a modest crowd of reporters and guests gathered in the second floor foyer of the new Providence Public Safety Complex.

"(Congress) will put this through in a heartbeat if the president gives them the green light."

The event was attended by Cumberland Mayor Daniel McKee, Central Falls Mayor Charles Moreau, Newport Mayor Richard Sardella and law enforcement officials including Pawtucket Police Chief George Kelley.

When asked why the extension was in danger of falling by the legislative wayside, Kennedy blamed special interests and political gamesmanship.

"The president is balancing his own self-interest with the preservation of lives," Kennedy told reporters, "and our families, children and police officers are the ones who will pay the price."

"We are worried about WMD, as if homeland security only meant defending our country from foreign attacks," Kennedy continued.

"For most inner cities, homeland security really means having your children come home safely after school. For most inner cities, homeland security really means reducing the number of drive-by shootings."

According to Kennedy and Cicilline, both Democrats, there has been a 25 percent reduction in firearm deaths in the U.S. since the ban was first enacted on Sept. 13, 1994 -- from 39,595 in 1993 to 29,573 in 2001.

Cicilline, who spearheaded a non-partisan effort to extend the ban at a recent gathering of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, said domestic gun violence kills more people each year than the cumulative toll of the war in Iraq.

If assault weapons such as the 35-round AK-47 are legalized on Sept. 13, Kennedy and Cicilline said the number and quality of assault weapons in illegal circulation will increase proportionately.

Proponents say the ban has little to do with the Second Amendment, since it would only prohibit the sale and importation of military-style weapons, designed, as Sardella put it, "for no other purpose than to help people harm people."

Most handguns and rifles, especially those commonly used for hunting and target shooting, would not be impacted by the ban.

Kennedy cited the North Hollywood bank robbery shootout of 1997 to illustrate an ongoing law enforcement situation in which, he said, police are routinely outgunned by criminals.

A press release circulated before the event also referenced the San Ysidro, Calif., McDonald's restaurant rampage of 1984 and the Waco, Texas, Branch Davidian standoff of 1993.

"Do we want that in Rhode Island?" Kennedy asked, in reference to the Los Angeles shootout. "Do we want that in Cumberland, Central Falls, Newport or Providence?"

Hell yes he would renew the ban, he says he will sign it if it crosses his desk.

Of course if he signs it before 3 NOV, he just might lose the NRA vote.

Which means he is so much toast.

I think that would be the final straw, especially after reading the pubbies education platform this year.

Good. Ignore the fascist, Bush.

the assault ban is just cosmetic anyway to keep the useful idiots happy. It's "Any gun that looks dangerous is bad", yet the guns that look "safe" can be even bigger, better, more expensive, and a hell of a lot more powerful.
The people supporting this ban probably never held a gun in their life, yet they think they're smart enough to make laws about them anyway. Idiot commies!

Good point. Don't forget to mention the police had to 'borrow' firepower from a nearby gunstore, which, if the current laws were in effect, the gun store would not have had. Nor would the citizens have.

On a tangent, the marksmanship from the Hollywood shootout was so famously bad, that a comedian commented that after a half hour or so of the LAPD shooting at them and missing, the perpetrators finally had to shoot themselves to end the standoff..... (a little black humor there, I think).

Kit.

( 6/27/2003 ) After presidential candidate Howard Dean spoke, Kennedy delivered an impassioned peroration against President Bush's tax cut. We hear that Kennedy told the crowd: "I don't need Bush's tax cut. I have never worked a [bleeping] day in my life." With that he got the audience's attention -- the dropping-jaws kind. "He droned on and on, frequently mentioning how much better the candidates would sound the more we drank," a witness told us. "Finally, he had to be stopped by a DNC volunteer." Kennedy's spokesman, Ernesto Anguilla, told us yesterday: "He was talking to the crowd; it was a rally-the-troops kind of speech about the tax cut. He was energizing the crowd and got caught up in it and used an unfortunate word, which he regrets using. . . . And no one pulled him off the stage."

They could have (and did) have "assault rifles", but they could not have had "assault weapons", since the term hadn't been defined yet.

Which is amazing, since no where near 25% of deaths via firearms were via "assault weapons".

Most were via handguns, yet there have been no signifigent handgun bans during the period, and in fact the number of states with shall issue (blue) concealed carry liscening systems has gone from 20 to 35. The number of may issue (yellow) (of various degrees of restriction) has gone from 17 to 9, and the number with "no issue" (red) has gone from 12 to 4. The number of "free" states (green) has doubled, from 1 to 2.

Actually, even if the ban had never been passed, those weapons would still have been illegal. It's been illegal for years to own a full-auto weapon in CA, Class III permit or no. Please recall, those AK's were full-auto, probably home modified, thus already illegal.

If the Kennedy's had their way, they'd save lives by massive government intervention into every aspect of life.

Any and all foods that are not specific for human survival would be banned. Including, but not limited to: ice cream, potato chips, sausage, pastries, cream cheese, gummy worms, etc.

Persons would be required to maintain a government mandated ideal weight and BMI ratio. Persons would be required to maintain a specific cholesterol level. Persons would be required to use SPF75 skin cream when outside. All motorized vehicles would be strictly controlled and constructed to government standards and fuel efficiencies for absolute minimum impact on the environment....no more NASCAR, muscle cars, deisel motors, no more off road travel by motor vehicle, etc.

All forms of entertainment and publishing interests would be required to submit to government standards to eliminate content that would offend protected groups, i.e., Gays, minorities, "illegal" immigrants, etc.

Schools would become indoctrination camps where youth would be exposed to information that only the governmment deems "truthful" and essential to the formation of approved thought processes. Children would be required to spy on their parents and legal guardians to insure proper thinking of all citizens.

Fascism is alive and well and in the minds and hearts of the government bureaucrats.

Kennedy cited the North Hollywood bank robbery shootout of 1997 to illustrate an ongoing law enforcement situation in which, he said, police are routinely outgunned by criminals.

Naturally, this pig neglects to state that, because AWs were still available at the corner gun store, cops borrowed some and took the bank robbers out. He also neglects to say that despite the thousands of rounds fired by the perps, no cops nor innocents were killed. (Will he sponsor legislation requiring use of full-auto weapons in future bank robberies, to save lives?) He also neglects to point out that it is already the case that criminals can't legally own guns at all, in which case criminals "outgunning" police won't be fixed by additional gun control laws, and that police already have the legal ability to use weapons beyond what mere peasant civilians are legally allowed to own, the Second Amendment notwithstanding.

A press release circulated before the event also referenced the San Ysidro, Calif., McDonald's restaurant rampage of 1984 and the Waco, Texas, Branch Davidian standoff of 1993.

If anything, Waco shows why civilians need AWs, not why they should be banned. Sad but true, sometimes government agents murder women and children by the dozens. What is Kennedy's plan to thwart that?

Courtesy of Howie Carr:

Patches, you may recall, committed a triple hate crime two years ago at LAX, assaulting an elderly black female security guard who apparently . . . did not know who he was.

The runt's response was classic Kennedy. First he denied it. Then someone produced the videotape, and Patches said the old lady had it coming, bigtime.

Now she's suing, and Patches' defense is as predictable as it is pathetic. He says the woman ``voluntarily and unreasonably proceeded to encounter a danger which was known to her.''

In other words, he's Ted Kennedy's son, and she knew - or should have known - what Kennedys do to women.
