Kerry citation a 'total mystery' to ex-Navy chief

August 28, 2004

BY THOMAS LIPSCOMB

Former Navy Secretary John Lehman has no idea where a Silver Star citation displayed on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign Web site came from, he said Friday. The citation appears over Lehman's signature.

"It is a total mystery to me. I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me," he said.

The additional language varied from the two previous citations, signed first by Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and then Adm. John Hyland, which themselves differ. The new material added in the Lehman citation reads in part: "By his brave actions, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty, Lieutenant (jg) Kerry reflected great credit upon himself...."

Asked how the citation could have been executed over his signature without his knowledge, Lehman said: "I have no idea. I can only imagine they were signed by an autopen." The autopen is a device often used in the routine execution of executive documents in government.

Kerry senior adviser Michael Meehan could not be reached for comment on Kerry's records.

It must be getting late...lol

Do you have his normal signature handy? It might be good to post it close to the other ones.

Thanks for the welcome. I have finally found some sanity on the net :).

Secretary Lehman was a member of the 911 Commission. This is how he signed his name on the final report:

You can view it at page 8 of http://www.9-11commission.gov/report/911Report_FM.pdf.

And just a few minutes ago on MSNBC, Bill Press announced that every smear against Kerry had been proven false, so case closed.

So Bill Press has evidence Kerry was in Cambodia for Christmas Eve 1968? Even the Kerry campaign and his own biographer says he was not and it's unlikely he was *ever* in Cambodia.

I'm waiting, Bill Press.

So Bill Press has evidence Kerry LIED in his own war diary and indeed there *was* hostile fire making him elligable for his first Purple Heart?

I'm waiting, Bill Press.

Let's talk about that Silver Star with that Combat V (for Valor) which has never ever been awarded. Funny how Kerry's DD214 claims he has one. That would make John F'n the only one in the history of the armed forces to have such a thing.

Bill Press? Mr. Press? Are you still there?

Here's the stuff on the "Combat V" which should prove useful information: According to SECNAVINST 1650.1G (Navy and Marine Corps Awards Manual) :

Bronze "V" (Combat Distinguishing Device).

Prior to 4 April 1974, the "V" was authorized for wear on the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal. Between 4 April 1974 and 17 January 1991, the "V" was authorized for wear on the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal and Navy Commendation Medal. On 17 January 1991, the "V" was authorized for wear on the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. The "V" is authorized for wear on these decorations if the award is for acts or services involving direct participation in combat operations. In all cases, the Combat Distinguishing Device may only be worn if specifically authorized in the citation. Eligibility for the Combat Distinguishing Device shall be based solely on acts or services by individuals who are exposed to personal hazard due to direct hostile actions, and not upon the geographical area in which the acts or services are performed. Each case must be judged on its own merits.

"Many mechanical typewriters were subtly unique. Unfortunately, carbon paper doesn't convey impressions all that well, and poor scans make things even worse, but I wonder if analysis of physical documents or high-resolution scans thereof would show that some documents were produced by Kerry's typewriter that, logically speaking, should not have been."

IIRC, one of the things that convicted the "Unibomber", was the FBI being able to tie his typewriter's unique "signature" to the letters he had typed with it, and sent to various newspapers, etc.

It sounds like kerry's typewriter had a LOT of use, and might have been a little "travel worn", IMHO, making the possibility of a "unique signature" all the more possible.

Is there any way to try to see if any of the kerry documents seem to have typewritten, consistant, "abnormalities" that would link them together, and possibly to kerry??

If portions of a document did NOT carry a consistant unique
signature,(IIRC, the "Unibomber" typewriter had something like the small letter "i" was missing the top dot, or something similar) could that point to a possible "addition" to a document??

Autopens have shrunk over the years. The smallest I have seen were about three feet square and only a few inches thick. They were used to sign routine categories of documents and often several people had approval authority. I once had to impound the signature template from one because of embarrassing documents signed without explicit approval authority by the signer. However, the volume of correspondence forces a delegation to one or more trusted authorizers as long as the system is to require the major program head to sign the documents. Also, the actual operation of the machine is by a clerk or secretary. Thus, there are multiple points where a false or altered document could be signed by autopen.

As another Navy vet, I would hope that Wade R. Sanders didn't have a bunch of plumbers working on Kerry's records, however, I would not put it past them.

I think that there are many reasons why they don't want Kerry to sign a 180, and this might be one of them.

The reason, we are not hearing this story on the MSM is their promise to Kerry before all of this started coming out.

That promise was don't worry about the SwiftVets, their book and tv commercials, we will handle this by ignoring it. (Actual wording was in a FR post weeks ago, by MSM key people to Kerry's key people.)

I see you've only been here for a week or so, and you've already contributed more than most Freepers in a lifetime. Welcome!

As for the signatures, I've assumed from the beginning that the 2 Lehman cites were issued at the same time and by autopen. You seem to have established that the autopen suspicion is correct. Thanks.

We've been slowly nudging this ball down the field for 5 months. I don't see how we can go much further without a release of the files. If only Lehman would go public and (loudly) request that Kerry release them. If there's a paper trail, it will reveal whatever reason Kerry gave to justify the new-and-improved citations in the 80's...and we'll have a field day with it. If the paper trail isn't there, then someone inside the Dept. of Navy conspired with Kerry to use the autopen and issue new citations.

Until we know that, it seems to me we're at a dead-end.

Thanks for collecting these posts and replies.

I'm pinging some of the good indexers on FR.

Friday night I told some friends that this is like pressure cooker that has been simmering for 3 decades re Kerry's serial lying and acts of treason.

The pressure cooker is too hot now for Kerry and the DNC to cool off, and we now have control of the heat of the stove. Each article like this turns the heat up a little more on that pressure cooker filled with the truth about the serial liar for 3 decades.

Personally, I think that the Swift Vets have even more damaging material to release. This article shows that more people are getting involved.

There is no way for the MSM arm of the DNC to control this anymore.

NY Post lead editorial today:
KERRY'S WAR VS. KERRY

Former Navy Secretary John Lehman denied at week's end having written the Silver Star citation that appears on John Kerry's campaign Web site over Lehman's signature, dealing the Democrat's presidential campaign another stunning blow.

Which makes us wonder: Does Kerry still believe that running on his Vietnam will gain him the White House?

The most recent — and the one with the most florid rhetoric — allegedly was signed by Lehman. But the former Navy secretary told the Chicago Sun-Times Friday: "I never saw it. I never signed it it. I never approved it."

Nevertheless, there it is on Kerry's Web site, over Lehman's signature.

It's a bewilderment, to put it mildly.

And the beat goes on....the ediorial continues to discuss the Combat "V", Schachte, etc.

Lets repost your warning and challenge to all good conservatives:

"Thank you for all you are doing on this matter. We cannot let Kerry win. It is unthinkable.

"I am reading Ben Stein's book "Can America Survive" and he is appalled at the leftists in this country and fears a civil war is brewing. I don't consider him an alarmist either. He worries where it will all end.

"This is the time to do EVERYTHING we can do to ensure a second Bush presidency. This means sending e-mails and interesting articles to friends and people in our address books. Volunteer to register voters; drive elderly people to the voting booths; donate $$.

"Make sure that your leftist friends know just who John stinkin' Kerry is. We must not let our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan be treated poorly!"

I know that I will never be able to change the minds of the lunatic left, so my mission with them is to make them even more insane.

When they start ranting at this, I tell them to go to hell. That their decades of controlling the media and crushing the truth are over. We will smash their Komrade Kerry this November and then their party the next 4 years.

They just stare or go into an insane rant. I just smile at them and leave.

"Liberals are by definition living in a fantasy world (Utopia on Earth courtesy of the State) and thus will NEVER, EVER let facts dissuade them from their preconceived opinions. The battle is of course for the mushy middle ground, as it has always been."

When more conservatives wake up and realize this, we will have more victories.

Last but not least we do have a daily battle with the various liars and parts of the MSM. We must expose their lies/spins and phoney mantras each day to erode the MSM's credibility with the middle. Free Republic offers us the best weapon/vehicle to do that each day.

"Sounds like Kerry believed it, when he read his own press briefings in the early 1970s. Then he got to the point that he thought he could just make things up as it goes, including Silver Stars."

He got by with this BS thanks to the left wing MSM that allowed him to lie in the Senate meeing and on his road trips of treason.

When the MSM becomes the media arm of the DNC, there is no control over the lying rat politicians. So rats like Kerry are allowed to become dangerous serial liars. He has been in bed with the Boston Globus Hystericus, the NY Slimes and the Washington Compost for over 3 decades. This is why they are spiking these stories. They will be as damaged as Kerry is when all of this comes out.

"Fracus pointed out that, his long time Wade R. Sanders, who was a river boat guy, also, served as an Asst Sec of the Navy. One can only imagine what was done to records under his watch.

Check out the following article written by Wade Sanders titled "MEDALS NOT AWARDED". Apparently he is still in the business of getting medals awarded after-the-fact. He was offering free legal services to vets through a San Diego clinic as early as the 1980's (according to a 1988 article in the San Diego Union Tribune).

This former enlisted man had stood by that officer in the same combat, exposed himself to the same risk, was part of the same team that prevailed, and his officer left him behind with nothing but a Purple Heart. To my mind this is a terrible injustice.

Since I belong to an association of those who served in Navy patrol boats in Vietnam, I decided to see if I could improve the situation. After all, the one mantra that was ingrained into me by my father, and by the traditions of my service, was that my number one responsibility as an officer is to take care of my men (or women, to be contemporarily correct).

So, I did a bit of research and discovered that there is no statute of limitations on awards. I found the office in the Pentagon that deals with awards, and I got the guidance I needed. The process is simple. An officer in charge of a unit is fully authorized to recommend any member of his "command" for a military decoration.

Whenever a Swift Vet or some on our side tries to get the truth out about Kerry, the rats and the MSM will immediately say they are Republican flacks or worse.

Well, one of Kerry's big supporters in this mess, Wade R. Sanders has a life long record of supporting the rats.

Thanks to Fracas, we have this data re Sander's contribution history.

Anyone want to comment on this article from Sanders…about ‘heroes’?

I don’t know what to make of this. I don’t have time to check out the site, but the quotes from Sanders are very interesting.
