Vandals cause $1,000,000 damage to Wal-Mart building under construction
WLOS ^ | 8/29/04 | staff

Posted on 08/29/2004 4:46:53 AM PDT by Rebelbase

This happened in Asheville, NC where the hippies and tree huggers have been fighting against the proposed Wal-Mart super center for years (link). Somone repeatedly drove a dumptruck trough the walls of the building under construction.

The article from WLOS:

Vandals hit the construction site of the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Swannanoa River Road overnight. Someone drove heavy construction equipment into the building, creating nearly one million dollars worth of damage.

The vandalism will push the opening of the controversial store back about a month. Workers say security around the site will be upgraded to prevent this sort of incident from happening again.

You were the one with the sob story.

I merely pointed out that Wal-Mart has a habit of getting in bed with local politicians and convincing them to use the power of eminent domain to sieze private property for the purpose of building their stores. Suddenly, you claim I'm a hippie supporter when I never, ever said anything supporting the hippies that give you so much displeasure.

What part of this do you not understand? Are you really that blind?

Maybe I am being naieve here, but is there a remote chance that this wasn't TARGETED at WalMart, but just kids doing the "destructive passes as fun" thing?

I am no fan of WalMart, but around here, if you leave your construction equipment on-site, teen-agers WILL find a way to start it and joyride on it, and crashing into things is considered "fun."

I was talking about hippies, you made it about something else. I said you were taking the same side of the anti-Wal Mart argument with the hippies when you argue against Wal-Mart. That is a red flag for me when I start to agree with any lib. They hate it, you hate it. You made this argument about three different aspects that my post didn't even address. Give it a rest.

Photo from a lib website of a portion of the damage:

The thread is titled " Asheville Wal-Mart partially deconstructed "

The vermin are praising the vandalism here: Asheville Wal-Mart partially deconstructed

Of the thousands of stores Wal-Mart has opened, please provide some documentation so we can ascertain how you define your belief that Wal-Mart has a "reputation" of using eminent domain.

In the past year I've heard or read about Wal-Mart using eminent domain in Seminole Co., FL, Alabaster, AL, Jacksonville, FL, and Denver, CO, and these are just the ones I've heard about. A quick Google search produced over 4200 hits on the subject. Are you incapable of doing your own research?

Thermal sounds like the crybaby lib to me. The one problem with FR - always a social misfit around spoiling for an argument. If they can't find a logical one, they twist your statements to make one. Yopu and I were talking about anti-business hippies, and when he loses that argument he contends it was about eminent domain and "mom and pop" businesses - something you and I weren't even talking about. If a "straw-man" argument isn't a lib tactic, what is? Now it's MY fault my county is full of hippies, and I'M a whiner. He's the baby who cried about his business suffering due to WM. A real business person would adapt and overcome, not blame his failures on someone else.

Who's posts have you been reading and attributing to me? I posted a comment that Wal-mart has a habit of using eminent domain to sieze private property and somehow that makes me pro-hippie and anti-business? You must be on some serious meds, pal.

You actually think that it's ok for a private, for profit company, like Wal-Mart, to use eminent domain to seize private property? Are you an American? Do you own property? Do a Google search and see for yourself. It's really simple, just go to www.google.com and type the following in the text window: Wal+Mart+Eminent+Domain and hit return. Do you think you can handle that? You'll get over 4000 hits. Do some reading why don't you? EDUCATE YOURSELF.

Partner, I am so pro-business and pro-private property rights I make you look like a Communist. I built 3 successful engineering businesses, one involved in telecommunications engineering and two involved in biomedical engineering, and this was after I funded my own college education from which I earned a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech. I retired at 38, what's your excuse? I have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Wal-Mart, I never have and they have ABSOLUTELY no effect on any of my businesses whatsoever. What part of this do you not understand?

If I'm such a Liberal, and btw, I'm not, I'll be voting for Bush for the 2nd time, please point to where I gave any mention to this comment you made:

He's the baby who cried about his business suffering due to WM.

THIS is a Liberal tactic. Once again, my businesses are telecommunications engineering and biomedical enginnering, get it? Wal-Mart can go piss up a knotted rope for all I care. I just don't think it's right that a private, for profit company should be able to use the GOVERNMENT POWER of eminent domain to sieze private property for the purpose of building their stores. GET IT?

You are living in a dream world and you owe me an appology.

I'm quite capable of doing my own research. I'm asking *you* to explain your belief that Wal-Mart has a "reputation" of using eminent domain. You've come up with 4 possibilities out of thousands of stores opened. 4200 hits on Google covering the same stories over and over again doesn't really provide proof of a "reputation" of this practice, especially when compared to other companies committing the same practice.

Not a single eminent domain case could happen without approval by the local government entity. I don't agree with the use of eminent domain (in most cases), but to portray Wal-Mart as having a "reputation" seems over-the-top.

Econmically, we need walmart to help the local economy recover from the enormous manufacturing job losses.

Will the last person in Asheville please turn out the lights.

So, the "Mom-n-Pop" grocery stores, hardware stores, clothing stores, etc., that are buried by Wal-Marts across the country are all run by hippies?

I know many small business owners in this area that protested the Super Center opening up here in Grants Pass, claiming it would force them to close.

They are the same people I see in line buying supplies for their businesses, stating they can not beat the prices they get at Wal Mart...and no, they have not lowered their prices passing on savings to their customers.

Find me one ,just " 1 " employee at any of Wal-marts in the area that have a 4 year degree and aren't in management that Wal-mart has truly helped the average american worker."

I know some teachers who work every summer at Wal Mart here. No unemployment benefits for them, OR is a right to work state. They go back year after year, worth it to them.

Just like Jizzy Jackson and his shakedown operation? ;-)

I wonder which one taught the other their trade?

Exactly. Eminent domain was originally intended for use by government for the common good, i.e., things like roads, sewers, power distribution, etc., not for private, for profit companies and local politicians to generate tax revenue.

I don't agree with the use of eminent domain (in most cases), but to portray Wal-Mart as having a "reputation" seems over-the-top.

I guess that's why there are so many anti-Wal-Mart groups popping up all over the country. Oh, and it's not just Wal-Mart using the eminent domain tactic.

Some groups just can't stand success. If Wal-Mart was not #1, these same groups would find something else to whine about. At least you've finally admitted that Wal-Mart isn't the only company that may have abused eminent domain, but I'd still like to find out what level of use is necessary before you define it as a "reputation", especially as compared to other companies. If Wal-Mart hasn't used eminent domain more than other companies, then either all these other companies have a "reputation", or your original premise is bad and it appears you have a slight vendetta against Wal-Mart.

Hmm..destroying a Wallmart isn't necessarily the deed of a leftist IMO.

It is if it's in Asheville! :) One of my husband's best friends is from there and we've visited a couple times. Yikes, it's a bastion of wacky lefties, is considered a New Age Mecca and has a very large gay community. Pagans and wiccans love it too. Hey, I see that lefties even have their own store there now! LOL

That is so SAD! Asheville used to be surrounded by Christian camps and God-fearing people back in the years before I40 was built through there. I remember it.
It sounds like California-Lite now. ~Sigh~
