Thanks for any help. This morning I was online (using dail-up) and it forze up on me. I have windows 2000. I hit rrestart after it froze and the system came back up except then it did not see my keyboard. So I hit the restart again and unplugged and replugged my keyboard (that's worked in the past for the mouse). Well now the monitor seems to start but goes immediately to like power save, with the the monitor light going from green to light yellow. Its on but not showing anything. Any suggestions?
Its at home so I will have to check it again later tonight.
Thanks

Unplug the CPU, monitor, everything for about1-2 minutes. Plug back in and restart.

ok, #5 above is as good a starting point as you'll get. Never plug or unplug non-USB peripherals such as mouse or keyboard with the power on.

Some monitors have a separate power save button on the front. You may have bumped it. If you see an unknown button on the front of your monitor, that may be it.

Potentially a videocard problem, but that usually results in a series of "beeps" when you restart
To: Sybeck1
Sounds like the video card is loose or went bad. Might try unplugging everything and physically removing and then reinstalling the video card. If that doesn't work, try another monitor (if you can).
If your graphics are integrated into your motherboard, can't really say what you should do beyond trying a different monitor.

I had a problem with mine yesterday morning. I couldn't get a full picture. I pushed the menu button and nothing. I shut the monitor down and then it wouldn't turn back on. Try milfords suggestion. After shutting everything off I turned off the power bar for a couple of minutes and then when I turned it back on everything was fine. Hope it works for you.

Your cat didn't sit on it, did he?
Series, though, do you have a different monitor you can try? If another one doesn't work then it's not the monitor. Beyond that, I defer to the marvelous IT wizards on this board who were so helpful when my Viking Kitty sat on my keyboard awhile back...

is the computer making any beeps when you turn it on? look up bios beep on google.com to get information on what beeping meens when starting your computer.
Also, don't unplug your keyboard or mouse when the computer is on, because, that is a BAD IDEA. Your computer likes to have those things at all times when it is awake.
If you have another monitor, try using that one, instead of your current monitor - or if you have a laptop, plug it into your monitor, and see if your monitor comes on w/ the laptop plugged in.
Usually, if there is something wrong with the pc, you should be getting a NO SIGNAL blurb on your monitor (some do this, some don't).
When you turn on your computer, do you see the windows start up screen, and then it goes blank, or does it just power up then off?
You could try a new power cable for your monitor, OR just buy a whole new system for $800 bucks or so at dell.com.
Yeah.

I had that problem once. After some fiddling around it turned out that the 4-pin power connector to my videocard turned bad for no apparent reason. Using another 4-pin connector worked like a charm.

Knowing nothing about your level of expertise, it's hard to know where to start. It could be a problem with either electronics, or OS/software.
Do you have current anti-virus software running on the machine? Adware blockers/killers? Is it well-ventilated? Does the power supply fan still work? The list of possible problems is endless...

Thanks for all of the help everyone has given me. The thought with having my computer down going into the RNC has got me down.
Seems it might be a terrible idea to unplug mouse and keyboard while the system is on. Will the system rectify itself?
The monitor comes on, its just immediately seems to go straight to the power safe sleep mode.

OK, I'm going to ask something that I have been wanting to ask for weeks. What is a 'stuned beeber'. I feel pretty stupid because it seems everyone else knows what it means. Oh well, one of the benefits of being anonymous on the internet (until I show up for my first Freeper meeting in Houston that is.)

The monitor comes on, its just immediately seems to go straight to the power safe sleep mode. This would indicate the monitor is not getting a video signal from the computer.
Possibilities:
- Bad video cable
- Bad monitor
- Bad video card (not likely if the POST* is successful - no beeping on startup indicates it is)
- Bad video cable connector on the monitor
- Bad video cable connector on the video card
There are other more esoteric things it could be but these are the most likely.
IMHO, try a different monitor first. Then try a different video cable.
But try just one possible fix at a time.

Never had a problem hot plugging PS/2 connectors, even in Win98. USB on the other hand will almost always cause problems in 98 or 2000, particularly unplugging. USB in XP works like a dream.

I'm sorry, but I had to hit the abuse button on your comment #40.
It a well known part of FReeper protocol that you NEVER, EVER asked about stuned beebers. Just like you never ask about the moose that bit your sister while she was eating cheese and making sure she was logged in.
Asking about this stuff is very nonproductive, contributes to very bad morale, and generally causes hugh series problems.

How about this plan of action.
I unplug all components.
Remove video card and place back in.
Plug everything back into the CPU, i.e. monitor, keyboard, mouse.
Make another attempt at turning it on.
Someone noted in a previously post not a good idea to unplug mouse or keyboard while running. My question is will the system correct itself?

Sounds like you got a lot of dirt in the machine. Here's what you do. Leave everything plugged in, Open the computer case. Get a water hose. Turn it on. Flush the inside of the computer case. Run a streeam of water over the monitor as well. Get a towel and blot everything up completely. That should fix the problem.
