If the “I am John Kerry’s sister” button weren’t enough to give her away, the distinctive face would do the trick.

Peggy Kerry, the 63-year-old older sister of the Democratic presidential nominee, was stumping for her brother and 6th Congressional District candidate Lois Murphy Sunday at The Works in Wyomissing.

A sinewy woman wearing tank top and sandals and decorated by buttons, earrings and a watch bearing her brother’s name, Kerry stressed the importance of this election to the approximately 50 Democrats who paid between $100 and $250 to attend the event.

“This is the most important election in our lives,” Kerry told supporters, listing women’s rights, jobs, and health care among the most important issues of the campaign.

“It’s not A.B.B., anybody but Bush It’s K.E.Y., Kerry, Edwards and you,” she said. “It’s with your help that on Nov. 2 we will elect and it sounds so strange we will elect my brother John Kerry president of the United States.”

Kerry, of New York City’s Greenwich Village, said she was glad to have escaped the city Sunday, on the eve of the Republic National Convention.

“I live in New York City and I’m glad I’m not there today,” she said.

She expressed support for throngs of protesters marching for reproductive choice and against the war, and said she was proud of their message that “there are things that haven’t gone right in the last years,” although she declined to answer questions on foreign policy because she works as a civil servant with the U.S. mission to the United Nations.

Kerry expressed awe of her brother, saying that despite having stumped for him in all of his campaigns, she still finds this presidential race amazing.

“This is a little bit different obviously. He’s running for president,” she said. “It’s still unbelievable.”

But harbingers of John Kerry’s shot at the nation’s highest office first came more than 30 years ago.

“I think people ... first started to tease him when he was in college and his initials were the same as John Kennedy,” she said. “It was just something that finally happened.”

Although the idea of her brother assuming the presidency is something she still hasn’t fathomed completely, she said his Navy service, four terms in the U.S. Senate, and time spent in Europe qualify him.

“He has an understanding of international as well as national (affairs). He’s my brother,” she laughed.

She said attacks on her brother’s experience and service in Vietnam are hard to take, both as a political supporter and a sister.

“It is hard and I feel it’s disrespectful and dishonest to all veterans to take the record of one veteran and try to tear it apart and discredit all veterans,” Kerry said.

She said veterans who put politics aside feel similarly.

Kerry also said the media images of her brother as a rich Northerner who attended private schools or as a standoffish and impersonal man are also inaccurate.

“I think this is what is lost, John’s ability to communicate and understand where people are coming from,” she said. “People try to paint him as aloof and he’s not.”

Although she said she and her brother were privileged to have gone to private school, their education was paid for by a wealthy aunt.

“We certainly didn’t have silver spoons in our mouths. So much of this is missold to the people,” she said, and described her family as middle to super-middle class.

But despite attacks from the Bush campaign and outside interests, Kerry said her brother has what it takes to win.

“My brother is a good closer. In New Hampshire and Iowa they wrote him off ... and then he won,” she said.

I don't imagine she cares. Liberal women often dress like this as a matter of principle. In addition, there is the feminist nonsense which pretends that "all women are sexy."

Y'all are getting entirely too much sleep lately. Here's another pic and some info on Peggy....

Peggy moved to the Village in late 1967 and has been here ever since. She has worked for the American Civil Liberties Union and New York Civil Liberties Union, has lobbied for the Community Service Society and served as consultant for Planned Parenthood. She is now nongovernmental organization (N.G.O.) liaison at the U.S. Mission to the U.N. — and she makes clear that prevents her from doing any political fundraising.

...and I love this one's spin, which says volumes about her prior effectiveness in the community. It falls below the following picture...

After having failed to reach a consensus for a candidate in their previous presidential endorsement vote, last Thursday the Village Independent Democrats resoundingly voted to support Massachusetts Senator John Kerry.

This seems like pointless nitpicking. No, I don't know whether she's actually rich.

She and Kerry come from an upper-crust background, although they weren't truly rich when growing up. I would think they were rich even then, however, in relation to the average American. And certainly they had an elite upbringing. That's the point.

At least it wasn't a see through dress like her niece wore for her showing at Cannes.

Lenny Bruce: It was one of those dresses you could see through and didn't wanna!

Phyllis Diller: It was a peek-a-boo dress. He peeked and 'Booed'!

"The Kerrys have a Hapsburg chin."

They are very royal you know, it's all on the mother's side. The Burke's peerage guy said so the other day.

But, in reality, this woman could take a fashion hint from Queen Elizabeth, or heck, even from her SIL, Ter-ray-za.

I thought that the left had a low threshold for who is "rich" in this country. $100k/year is "rich" to a Democrat stump speaker; I think you can even bring that figure down to $65k in some districts.
