NEW YORK (AP) - Republicans are satisfying their convention delegates with an angry vision of the presidential race and attacks on Democratic nominee John Kerry, but it won't play well with voters in the closing weeks of the campaign, Democrats said Thursday.
``Are Americans going to react to a message of fear or respond to a message of hope?'' said Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, who joined Democratic Chairman Terry McAuliffe and a half-dozen Democratic mayors in the closing session of the party's rapid response effort.
``Delegates love this kind of stuff, but when this settles down and we get past Labor Day, I think this convention will prove to be a big mistake,'' said Philadelphia Mayor John Street. ``People out in the country's neighborhoods want to know what you have to offer us.''
The Republican strategy of attacking Kerry's Vietnam war record may have been unleashed too early, Street said.
``People were paying attention to the attacks over the last five weeks, but I think it was a little too early,'' Street said. ``What are they going to do during the month of October when people are really paying attention?''
Street was one of a half-dozen mayors at the Thursday briefing a half dozen blocks south of the GOP convention. The mayors, including Robert Baines of Manchester, N.H.; Jack Ford of Toledo, Ohio; Tom Barrett of Milwaukee, Michael Coleman of Columbus, Ohio and John Marks, of Tallahassee, Fla., talked about how Bush administration policies are hurting cities by cutting federal funding aimed at helping cities in areas such as housing and funding extra police.
``We're protecting Baghdad, but we can't protect people in our own housing projects,'' said Trenton, N.J. Mayor Douglas Palmer.
But the Democrats also focused on what they called the angry tone of the Republican convention, a suggestion rejected by Bush campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt. He said people are interested in hearing Republicans contrast the president's clear plans with Kerry's ``vacillation and indecisiveness.''
When asked what was wrong with the GOP's approach at their convention the Democrats replied, "They are running on their record and trying to win!"
"Dems Question GOP Approach at Convention"
Well, of course.
Long Live the King!
Wanna bet?

just to reemphasize the point swiftvets are an independent 527 organization with more ties to the pubbies or the copperheads.
Translation: They're killing us. Gotta whine some more.
The will react to a message of hope and optimism, which is why momemtum is shifting towards Bush.
Libs really do have some sort of mental problem. For at least a couple of years they have been bashing Bush, nasty, negative, telling us all the things that the USA does wrong, that the USA cannot do, and they think that is a message of hope???
Hmmm. OK, Republicans are meanspirited and nasty, and they attacked our guy too early.
Notice - no refutations of points made. When you have no defense, attack the character of the person making the accusation. Something we see over and over again.
I think the Mayor is responsible for that, not the President.
LOL! Let's see, who is trying to scare a vote out of someone in the above statement? Maybe the author of this story forgot the starting premise. LOL!
Democrats have long tried to scare votes out of people -- blacks, the poor, anyone with children in public schools, the elderly... Now Republicans are doing it. It is not the reason I am voting for Bush. We will see if it works on anyone else.
Mostly, neither. The dumbasses will respond to a message of "hope". Others will respond to ideas and actions.
Or perhaps I just don't understand what a "message of hope" is, coming from a politician, unless it is that he/she will go away.
That is certainly a top-notch collection of defenders F'n has assembled. Odd that the party heavyweights are nowhere to be found.
It appears many of the RATs may already be deserting the ship.
P-R-O-J-E-C-T-I-O-N !!!!
That's YOUR JOB, mayor. If your cities weren't such armpits and city governments weren't filled with affirmative action employees who just take up space, you wouldn't have any housing projects.
Police are a LOCAL matter, mayor.
BLOODIED AND REELING AGAINST ROPES, DEMS DEEM IT "UNFAIR" BEING BLUDGEONED BY TRUTH AT GOP CONVENTION
Uh, er, er -- it was the biggest cable viewing audience EVER, brainiac, so yeah I think people were paying attention.
I suspect we haven't seen the last of the slime from Jean-Ted Kerredy. But at the rate the word "Nazi" is being thrown around on DU, I'm thinking the ones that have truly blown their wad are the democrats. They're really beginning to believe their hyperbole, which is a disturbing trend.
Well, I guess we have confirmation that we're doing it right, now.
**Gotta whine some more.**
Maybe we should send them some cheese to go with their whine.
Oh gosh! I thought we were supposed to send our Christmas lists to the president and he would give everyone everything they want.
Gee, have any of these gentelmen considered the fact that if the terrorists win, protecting people in housing projects won't be necessary? Biological and nuclear weapons will make short work of those housing projects.
Yeah, and the Lakers questioned the Pistons' approach to the NBA finals.
They actually believe that stuff they say!!!
ROFL. I didn't sense anger or negativism out of the Convention. All I felt was the happiness, the excitement and the optimism from every one in that hall. And from the speakers. Terry McAwful must be watching a different convention from the one I have. Then again, denial is a river in the Democratic Party.
You ani't seen nutin' yet Mayor Street. Ever hear of an October surprise?

PING!
I just love watching the Dems come unglued.
The Dems message of hope is "Gosh, Mr. AQ Islamofascist, I sure hope you won't hurt us again!"
I didn't see a message of fear anyway - except that you'd better be afraid if Kerry is CIC. It was a message of strength, and how strength dispels fear. Message of hope? Bush should work into his speech tonight that "hoping" won't make terrorism go away. I swear that Dims think that type of approach works. It's been proven false over and over, but they still think we can all hold hands and sing "Kum by Ya" and the bogeyman will go away.

Her = HERE
"On what grounds"
"Because thjs testimony is killing my case"
Their own party leaders have whipped them into a hateful, paranoid psychotic frenzy - based on lies. If one of them tries to hurt Dubya, I will blame the hatemongering top Dems.
I worry (and pray) for Bush. These people are dangerous.
Whine whine whine.
"...I think it was a little too early,'' Street said. ``What are they going to do during the month of October when people are really paying attention?''"
Just wait and see.......................... (chortle,snort,snort).
They already know they're going to lose. They don't understand why, they believe they are better people, and now they're locked out yet again.
That's why they are insane now.
Meanwhile, watch for 'Rat Senate candidates in many states avoid Typhoid Kerry and try to get on the same stage with Dubya or at least run ads with Dubya. If Daschle is doing it, the rest will surely follow.
LOL! Talk about a bogus story! I'm sure Rove will take advice from the Kerry camp. This is almost as funny as the rabid media accusing the Republicans of being partisan in an election year...
``We're protecting Baghdad, but we can't protect people in our own housing projects,'' said Trenton, N.J. Mayor Douglas Palmer.
-- Trenton, NJ?? They can't handle their own affairs, much less get involved with national politics. Frankly, I'd be embarassed to admit I was the Mayor of that hellhole.
bump
Rolling poll, 4 point bounce so far from Rep. Convention and the President hasn't even spoken...... Bounce from Dem COnvention, NADA...
I'll take a dems advice about what's best for the Republicans the day I trust them to know what's right for National Security.
Which is the message of fear. Just like the Democrats tell voters "you'd better be afraid of Republicans...the want to take away your police officers, your school teachers, your social security, etc..." It is the same thing.
But the Democrats also focused on what they called the angry tone of the Republican convention, a suggestion rejected by Bush campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt. He said people are interested in hearing Republicans contrast the president's clear plans with Kerry's ``vacillation and indecisiveness.''Texas Democrats are quickly becoming an endangered species.
