Dems Question GOP Approach at Convention
AP ^ | Sept. 2, 2004

Posted on 09/02/2004 11:33:26 AM PDT by Leroy S. Mort

NEW YORK (AP) - Republicans are satisfying their convention delegates with an angry vision of the presidential race and attacks on Democratic nominee John Kerry, but it won't play well with voters in the closing weeks of the campaign, Democrats said Thursday.

``Are Americans going to react to a message of fear or respond to a message of hope?'' said Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, who joined Democratic Chairman Terry McAuliffe and a half-dozen Democratic mayors in the closing session of the party's rapid response effort.

``Delegates love this kind of stuff, but when this settles down and we get past Labor Day, I think this convention will prove to be a big mistake,'' said Philadelphia Mayor John Street. ``People out in the country's neighborhoods want to know what you have to offer us.''

The Republican strategy of attacking Kerry's Vietnam war record may have been unleashed too early, Street said.

``People were paying attention to the attacks over the last five weeks, but I think it was a little too early,'' Street said. ``What are they going to do during the month of October when people are really paying attention?''

Street was one of a half-dozen mayors at the Thursday briefing a half dozen blocks south of the GOP convention. The mayors, including Robert Baines of Manchester, N.H.; Jack Ford of Toledo, Ohio; Tom Barrett of Milwaukee, Michael Coleman of Columbus, Ohio and John Marks, of Tallahassee, Fla., talked about how Bush administration policies are hurting cities by cutting federal funding aimed at helping cities in areas such as housing and funding extra police.

``We're protecting Baghdad, but we can't protect people in our own housing projects,'' said Trenton, N.J. Mayor Douglas Palmer.

But the Democrats also focused on what they called the angry tone of the Republican convention, a suggestion rejected by Bush campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt. He said people are interested in hearing Republicans contrast the president's clear plans with Kerry's ``vacillation and indecisiveness.''

When asked what was wrong with the GOP's approach at their convention the Democrats replied, "They are running on their record and trying to win!"

The will react to a message of hope and optimism, which is why momemtum is shifting towards Bush.

Libs really do have some sort of mental problem. For at least a couple of years they have been bashing Bush, nasty, negative, telling us all the things that the USA does wrong, that the USA cannot do, and they think that is a message of hope???

Notice - no refutations of points made. When you have no defense, attack the character of the person making the accusation. Something we see over and over again.

LOL! Let's see, who is trying to scare a vote out of someone in the above statement? Maybe the author of this story forgot the starting premise. LOL!

Democrats have long tried to scare votes out of people -- blacks, the poor, anyone with children in public schools, the elderly... Now Republicans are doing it. It is not the reason I am voting for Bush. We will see if it works on anyone else.

Mostly, neither. The dumbasses will respond to a message of "hope". Others will respond to ideas and actions.

Or perhaps I just don't understand what a "message of hope" is, coming from a politician, unless it is that he/she will go away.

That's YOUR JOB, mayor. If your cities weren't such armpits and city governments weren't filled with affirmative action employees who just take up space, you wouldn't have any housing projects.

Police are a LOCAL matter, mayor.

I suspect we haven't seen the last of the slime from Jean-Ted Kerredy. But at the rate the word "Nazi" is being thrown around on DU, I'm thinking the ones that have truly blown their wad are the democrats. They're really beginning to believe their hyperbole, which is a disturbing trend.

ROFL. I didn't sense anger or negativism out of the Convention. All I felt was the happiness, the excitement and the optimism from every one in that hall. And from the speakers. Terry McAwful must be watching a different convention from the one I have. Then again, denial is a river in the Democratic Party.

I didn't see a message of fear anyway - except that you'd better be afraid if Kerry is CIC. It was a message of strength, and how strength dispels fear. Message of hope? Bush should work into his speech tonight that "hoping" won't make terrorism go away. I swear that Dims think that type of approach works. It's been proven false over and over, but they still think we can all hold hands and sing "Kum by Ya" and the bogeyman will go away.

Her is one good Democrat!

Mad as Zell

When he was a younger man,
He was a Marine.
Later it was politics,
Still that is his scene.
Yes a lifelong democrat,
But he saw it change.
Since he is a patriot,
He sure found it strange.
Democrats no longer care,
For what made us great.
So now he is speaking out,
Before it’s too late.
America needs leadership,
Not a flip and flop.
George Bush has Zell Miller’s vote,
Kerry we must stop!

Meanwhile, watch for 'Rat Senate candidates in many states avoid Typhoid Kerry and try to get on the same stage with Dubya or at least run ads with Dubya. If Daschle is doing it, the rest will surely follow.
