John Kerry should have slept on it. His midnight outburst following President Bush's rousing success in defining himself, his domestic agenda and the stakes in the war on terrorism reveals a candidate who can be goaded. Not good in a president.
"For the past week, they have attacked my patriotism and even my fitness to serve as commander in chief," said Kerry early Friday in Springfield, Ohio. "Well, here's my answer to them. I will not have my commitment to defend this country questioned by those who refused to serve when they could've and who misled America into Iraq."
Clearly seething with the TV remote control when he was to be relaxing during Republican convention week, Kerry blew at the first opportunity.
Nobody, of course, questioned his patriotism. His policies, yes. His votes during 20 years in the Senate, yes. His apparent inability to make and abide a decision, yes. His commitment to a strong military, yes. His patriotism, no.
It's a revealing outburst. Despite the pounding Kerry took from the partisans, the weeklong break had actually served Kerry's campaign.
The mainstream media, most Democrats and others who don't quite grasp the significance or understand the emotionalism of events of three decades ago are dying to move on to other, more comfortable subjects. So what does he do? Rants and revives the debate about individual conduct during the Vietnam war.

Whoa! This from the Urinal and Constipation? Ain't looking good for Jean al Query!
Kerry is toast.
Smells like they're giving up on kerry. Hillary in the wings? I am thinking kerry may step aside due to 'health reasons' shortly.
But wouldn't that make it Edwards? Or is it totally up to the DNC to choose still?
Kerry is so arrogant and it shows, BUT GOOD!
Kerry doesn't get it.
>>>Whoa! This from the Urinal and Constipation? Ain't looking good for Jean al Query!
You beat me to it...that was my thought when I read the article and saw the source...
Man. After all these years, it still bugs the snot out of John Kerry that his local draft board refused his request to exempt him from the draft so he could attend school in France.
eFing are you speaking of...

Sending the Breck Girl out there to defend him is rather hilarious.
btt
I feel a Dean moment coming on. It ain't going to be pretty.
I'd like to talk more about Vietnam. And quit questioning MY patriotism! <snicker
> I am thinking kerry may step aside due to
> 'health reasons' shortly.
It won't be as easy as it was when they did that to
Eagleton (plus that didn't save the ticket anyway).
A deadline passed this week, so the DNC is looking at
having to pull off 50 Toricelli Maneuvers.
Author (Jim Wooton) is long time ABC newsie!
"And the Bernard Goldberg Award goes to....."
In other words Kerry shut up and we will bury the Viet Nam story, but we can't while you are talking about it.
I find it rather amazing that Kerry swept the primaries so easily. How is it that the Democrats could have blundered so?
Absolutely.
The Bible's pretty clear about avoiding a man [easily/chronically?] given to anger--as SKERRY is.
A commentator on Fox tonight said this comment was something you would say to a butler, not the American public.
Why does he continue to run on his Viet Nam record and attack his opponents for their [superficially] comparative lack? Is his core constituency [the hard Left] supposed to be impressed?
If he wants to appeal to the Demo rank and file, he should be running on his post-war ANTI-WAR activism and his Senatorial voting record. He doesn't seem to want to do this.
Perhaps he's taking his core constituencey for granted and is trying to fool the corn-fed doofuses in fly-over country into thinking that he's not really a Leftist appeaser.
I think I'll try and take this up w/my friends at DU [same username].
That's an awesome graphic.
Unfortunately, zombies do vote. For one of their own, in this case.
But Hillary has to be at Bill's bedside right now (a place she is wholly unfamiliar with!).
"I will not have my commitment to defend this country questioned by those who refused to serve when they could've and who misled America into Iraq."
Well, I didn't do either of these things and I question your commitment to defend this country. You betrayed it and you betrayed our military and this county. May you pay the price for that. In fact, I do question your patriotism. Take that! In the Viet Cong hall of infamy. Betrayal of freedom fighters in Nicaragua. Meeting with our communist enemies when we were at war. You would betray this country now as you have in the past if you get the chance, which you won't. I'm just one of the little, middle class people John Kerry want to "help," so I can question anything I please. Young men I knew came back and were spit on. People believed your lies, which you told to advance your career. There is a special place in hell for you, John Kerry.
What no one asks is why John F*ckin' took ALL the easy assigmments during the Vietnam War AND sought to stay out of harm's way as much as possible. Sure sounds like the definition of a "chickenhawk" to me. What's he getting touchy about? Every one who was connected just did not want to go there or pretend to serve without getting killed. Now if President Bush HAD been a draft dodger, Kerry would be right but since Bush did the same thing Kerry did, Kerry is only being a hypocrite in accusing others of doing what he did during the Vietnam War: seek out cushy assignments in the military as an alternative to dodging the draft altogether.
ROFLMAO

I'm guessing that since I recall agreeing with this columnist before that he is the resident conservative at the AJC. I'm sure that the rest of the rag does not reflect this clear thinking view. Even the NY Slimes allows a minority dissenting opinion. We can't get carried away into thinking that the MSM is coming around.
However, I am glad that those who get their news only from the MSM will see this piece. This column is spot on!
Every Big City Liberal newspaper has its token house conservative for "balance."
"Sending the Breck Girl out there to defend him is rather hilarious."
All he needs to do is tour with some long-time, reputable actor to give him stature - like Jane Fonda.

He's imploding so fast I wouldnt put it past "Run" DNC Terry to have started making substitute noise to SHrillery, and she knows theres no stopping Dubya now...sooooo.....oops, Willie's ticker needs a rebuild, See ya boys! turn out the lights when you leave ok?
I find it rather amazing that Kerry swept the primaries so easily. How is it that the Democrats could have blundered so?
Emotion--in this case, hated for Bush--overwhelmed honesty.
They should have picked Dean--at least they would have sown the seeds for a party that truly represents what its constituents believe. And all the Zell Miller dems would have bolted the party. BUT it would have been what they WANTED, and they would have fought furiously for Dean's election.
They don't care if Kerry wins.
> Has anyone else noticed that Kerry does this
> hindu hand-clasp namaste thing:
It includes a bow when he's facing his masters in Bejing.
> No wonder Theresa is so irritable.
When did she learn the truth about the medals?
How did she take it?
What will she do about it?
I can't believe Kerry would do something this crass! He should have just wrote Bush a letter and had Max Cleland deliver it.
Kinda sad to see in a way. The wacko special interest groups, the socialist mentality of the elitist intelligencia, have all combined to drive the Democrat party so far out on the fringe it's destroying itself. This country needs a strong two party system and the socialist elitist have to a great degree succeeded in destroying one of them.
Unfortunately, there are enough mind numbed robots/useful idiots out there to support a decaying corpse.
> How is it that the Democrats could have blundered so?
It's easier to grasp if you accept the theory that it
was intended - the Clinton Sabotage Theory.
The debates should be fun. I hope Bush's people are developing various ways of getting under Kerry's skin while still sounding presidential.
Sharpton? A criminal....
Graham? Seemed mentally unbalanced...
Moseley-Braun? C'mon!
Gephardt? Beholden to the unions and not much of a Congressional record, but would not have been as bad as Kerry....
Dean? Dull centrist governor pretsneding to be nuts (whereas Kerry is anut trying to pass himself off as normal!) (that's from Mark Steyn).....
Lieberman? The most moderate but the party hard core stayed away in droves.....
Oh, and Breck-Boy himself, whom no one could take seriously. So that left Kerry - after all he WAS electable and he is not George W Bush!
I hope this election turns out to be the death rattle of the modern (post-1968) Democratic Party!
Remember that it was in Iowa - the first primary - that Rassman made the "dramatic" appearance as the one Kerry dragged out of the water ( stifle gag ).It was, however, effective. Dean was already starting to slip a little bit - so Kerry seemed like a "safe" alternative. Of course, we all know what happened with Dean after the results came in ( YARRRRRRAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!) and that just sealed the deal.
The fatal flaw Kerry's thinking is that he already has milked the Vietnam story dry - it worked for a short period of time - but it can't possibly continue to work because the "dramatic moment" has come & gone. Lucky for us he can't get past this & thinks that it's still effective - or - he's just mentally ill & we should all pray that he never winds up anywhere near 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. "
Nice. Some of those pictured seated are on the President's 'short list'
This is going to put Michael Savage's thesis, that liberalism is a disease rather than a political philosophy, to the acid test.
Remember when many FReepers were all depressed at the Dean implosion because Kerry was supposed to be "electable"?
Same deal in reverse.
I did! I asked on a couple of threads about it this morning and a couple of others had noticed also. It is his yoga training...sure is going to go over well with the race car guys!!....Hope Rush or Sean pick up on it for next week...
