RUSSIA: Europeans Blame Russia for School Massacre

September 4, 2004: Russia has ordered North Ossetia to be sealed off, and more troops and police have been sent in. So far, 20 of the terrorists have been killed, ten of them said to be Arabs, and three captured. At least four more were still on the loose. One of the teenage captives reported that the terrorists had placed bombs all over the school gymnasium, where many of the hostages were being held. She said some of the bombs were taped to the wall, and tape on one bomb came loose, the bomb fell and went off, causing the terrorists to panic and set off more bombs and start shooting at hostages. While most countries offered condolences to Russia, the European Union demanded to know why there were so many casualties. The European Union has long held Russia responsible for the Chechen situation, downplaying the role of Chechen gangsters, religious fanatics and terrorists.

It did not seem to have bothered the Romans. Their empire lasted hundreds of years after the sack of the temple and the Eastern half where the ctual temple was lasted 1,000 years more. The English kicked out all their Jews in the middle ages and they only grew in power. Nixon helped Israel in its time of need - God seems not to have helped him over that Watergate thing. Garbage theology.

Actually, the Turkish mafia in Germany has been overwhelmed in recent years, by several different Russian groups and the Chechen group. Even the German police are left at a loss to explain how this occurred and how to stop it.

As for the EU position. It is absolute knowledge as to what the Russian did when they rolled into the Chechen homeland 6-7 years ago. The Russians met heavy resistence and fed literally thousands of dead troops into the episode. They destroyed the capital of the region...and killed thousands upons thousands of residents (didn't matter if they were holding weapons or not). If the region was loaded with oil...I'd understand...but it wasn't. And so what does Russia get today by full control over the Chechen homeland...nothing really. Most folks who lived there and were neutral...have simply left. Its a wasteland. No business can exist. Except for kidnapping and drug sales...they can't make any major income in the region. Growing crops is about the only way to ensure your yearly survival. The EU is correct that the Russians haven't thought out the long term implications of the situation. And if anyone thinks this school assault will be the last...guess again. I would be willing to wager that sometime before Xmas...another school will be hit. You simply can't protect everyone...all the time. Its rare that the EU is right...but on this case....they have a point. What exactly does Russia have in store for the Chechen homeland? Find one single positive policy over the issue.

From the Russian point of view, the trans-Caucasus region is of prime importance due to the perceived necessity of moving petroleum from the Caspian through a pipeline which has not yet been constructed. Oil cannot be shipped out through the Straights of the Bosporous, due to Turkey's insistence. Therefore, although the region is not oil-rich, it remains strategically important for Moscow.

The Chechens have demonstrated a tremendous resistance to the Kremlin's pipeline plans, and with the criminal culture within Chechnia carried abroad in their expatriates, it seems that the positive policy for Putin is to spend Chechnya, to waste it, for the greater good of the Russian state. While Yeltsin has warned Putin against this policy direction, the wind is blowing, and carrying everyone.
