Islamic leaders in the Middle East yesterday denounced the slaughter of children in Russia as 'unIslamic', as commentators asked unusually soul-searching questions about the region and terrorism.
Even the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's biggest Islamic group, condemned the bloody siege in Beslan. Its leader, Mohammed Mahdi Akef, said that kidnappings may be justified but killings are not. He added: 'What happened is not jihad [holy war] because Islam obligates us to respect the souls of human beings; it is not about taking them away.'
While some Islamic fundamentalists in the Middle East have long supported fellow Muslims fighting in Chechnya, such was the barbarity of the hostage takers that few voices spoke in support of the actions in Ossetia. Egypt's leading Muslim cleric, Grand Sheik Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, was quoted as saying during a Friday sermon: 'What is the guilt of those children? Why should they be responsible for your conflict with the government? You are taking Islam as a cover and it is a deceptive cover; those who carry out the kidnappings are criminals, not Muslims.'
Ali Abdullah, an Islamic scholar in Bahrain who follows the ultra-conservative Salafi stream of Islam, also condemned the school attack as 'unIslamic'. However, he insisted Muslims were not involved and revived an old conspiracy theory: 'I have no doubt that this is the work of the Israelis, who want to tarnish the image of Muslims.'
But the reaction was overwhelmingly filled with revulsion. Abdulrahman al-Rashed wrote an article in the pan-Arab Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper under the headline: 'The Painful Truth: All World Terrorists are Muslims!'
Al-Rashed said that Muslims will not be able to cleanse their image unless 'we admit the scandalous facts... Our terrorist sons are an end-product of our corrupted culture. The picture is humiliating, painful and harsh for all of us.'
His extraordinary critique was echoed by Ahmed Bahgat, an Egyptian Islamist. Writing in the pro-government newspaper, Al-Ahram , he said hostage-takers in Russia and Iraq are only harming Islam. 'If all the enemies of Islam united and decided to harm it... they wouldn't have ruined and harmed its image as much as the sons of Islam have done by their stupidity, miscalculations and misunderstanding.' Horrifying images of the dead and wounded students 'showed Muslims as monsters who are fed by the blood of children and the pain of their families'.

Perhaps they are looking for an out in reference to "insurgents", "Militants", "Freedom Fighters", "Geurrilla's", "Human activists", and really want to express their true political/religious agenda before it gets lost, and in their confusion called it "unislamic".

Hmmm. From the lips of an Egyptian Islamicist. As we always point out relative to the Demoncrats, listen to the way they describe their impression of the thoughts and intentions of the opposition. It typically reveals the truth of their own beliefs and perspective. I'd say this cleric pretty much got it right.

The Islamics in Russia have a real problem now. Putin has been easy on them, but I think given Putin's blaming this event on the fall of the Soviet Union, the crackdown is going to come fast. So much for democracy in Russia.

is it really condemnation at all? They should all be rising up against animals like those mentioned in the article, like those who could conspire for months to kidnap, torture (vis a vis confinement and threats of death randomly carried out) and outright murder of the children, parents and teachers of Beslan. The whole world should be outraged and grieving with Russia. And the Muslim world should be doing a little housecleaning to distance themselves from animals like these terrorists and making clear efforts to stop them cold.

Bump to the top. I think this is as hopeful a sign as you could hope for at this point in Bush's transformational Mid-East "crusade".
Apart from the predictable "the Jews did it" irrationality, much of the Arab opinion presented here reflects horror and disgust at what happened in that school. The rest denounces the political effects such barbarity will engender.
This is a very positive and hopeful sign.

Every Muslim claims that Islam is the religion of peace... however, here is another opinion by The Hadith of Muhammed: "Fighting and Sacred Rage in the Cause of Allah (Jihad): War, killing, and rage were the foundation of Islam, and it is the same to this hour in the heart of Ghadaffi, Saddam Hussein, and Osama Bin Laden. What? - and break my streak?? Yes, as horrible as the stories about this atrocity are and continue to get, they are made more evil by those who attempt to justify it.
Yet our media and worldwide media continue to call these Islamofreaks mere "terrorists."
Hmmph, that is of those who even bother to call them terrorists at all. ABC called them Chechen separatists, BBC and CNN and others called them hostage-takers and gunmen. Puh-lease. We need John Stossel's 'Give me a break' segment on this one. As I've said, calling them Chechen separatists or alleged terrorists just allows them to gloat over the notion that their cause is just and legitimate and any action they take to that end is just fine. I've been like a broken record correcting people in conversation about this all week. Most are just plain apathetic, if they mention it at all. And therein lies the problem.
The muslims are just trying to cover their camel asses. Playing the lip service game of condemning, but actually laughing under their breath. They are no friends of America, and need to be deported.
