BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Izzat Ibrahim al-Duri, deputy commander of armed forces under Saddam Hussein, was captured Sunday near Tikrit by the Iraqi national guard and U.S. troops, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said. The Pentagon had no immediate confirmation. He was the highest-level Iraqi official not yet captured. Last November, the U.S. military announced a $10 million reward for information leading to his capture. The military said al-Duri was organizing many attacks by insurgents in Iraq. Al-Duri was number six on the U.S. military's list of 55 most wanted Iraqi officials, which described him as vice chairman of Saddam's Revolutionary Command Council. He was the king of clubs on the U.S. military's card deck showing wanted Iraqi officials Four of al-Duri's nephews were captured in January in Samarra. The U.S. Central Command said they were suspected of providing him with transportation and hiding places. Al-Duri, a longtime Baath Party leader, was instrumental in helping Saddam come to power in a 1968 coup. U.S. officials say he was also involved in Saddam's decision to use chemical weapons against Kurds in northern Iraq in 1988. That attack killed 5,000 people and left 10,000 severely injured -- many blinded, maimed or disfigured Iraqi Justice Minister Malik Dohan al-Hassan had warned that al-Duri could face trial in absentia if he was not found. Other developments A series of weekend incidents killed at least 40 people in Iraq. In the northern city of Kirkuk, a suicide car bomb attack killed 15 people and wounded 36, the Iraqi National Guard said Saturday. In the town of Latifia, 16 police officers were killed and 20 wounded in fighting Saturday between insurgents and Iraqi security forces, an unnamed police official told CNN. (Full story)

If we did get him, we should let Kerry write the after-action report. Maybe he can award himself a Congressional Medal of Honor this time.
