Green cards, Social Security cards, birth certificates. You name it, they can print it. It's an open-air bazaar in the City of Angels, where the underground economy sizzles and salesmen known as micaderos spot you from half a block away.
I slowed down at a corner and two men approached my car, asking what I needed. I am a California-born gringo of European descent, and so I had to come up with something to make them think I wasn't an undercover cop.
In Spanish, I said I was an undocumented Spaniard.
"De España," one guy said to the other.
I need a driver's license, I said.
Two hundred bucks, they said.
And how long would it take?
Thirty minutes.
I said I'd think about it.
A couple days later, I tried another guy who said he could get me a license for $90.

Also, the article makes zero reference to any subsidies they may be collecting, and it's difficult, if not impossible, to believe the people profiled in the article pay govt tax of any sort (one hands out fliers for a low-cost prenatal service that caters to "immigrants" and the other shines shoes and works as a janitor). So much for AgJobs and the Totalization agreement.

Like other undocumented immigrants, Guillermo has a fake Social Security card, and every year workers like him pay billions of dollars into Social Security unaware that they can claim this money if they become legal residents.

For someone like Guillermo, 58, the Social Security funds would be a windfall. Since he sends most of his money to Mexico, he's never set aside any money for his retirement.
I'd really like to see an account of what these funds sent back to Mexico accomplish. Our media so lacking in any pretense of objectivity, it seems to me they report on one hand how little Mexicans receive in pay at home, and yet we read how much those here illegally send home. If this has any basis in fact, the ol' folks at home must be doing exceptionally well.
For those not familiar with Santa Ana, that formerly nice, conservative community now is almost entirely Spanish-speaking. Driving through there makes you believe that you're in Mexico. It is trashy, it is total gangland, and shots are fired frequently by the gang members who are "protecting their turf".
This is the crap that illegal aliens are bringing to California, and we're paying for the whole mess.
And they want to make these people CITIZENS?? We have enough trash, crime, ignorance and unemployment right here without importing it.
And today, ta da, I was treated to a little sojourn through the Kragen's in East San Jose (Tully rd, for all you NorCal types), where ALL, not just some, of the signs were in Spanish. And of course I was the only - ahem - pale person in the store. Of course, me singing "Viva La Migra!" does make everyone there a bit uncomfortable...including the guys with the Toyota from Puebla which curiously had a California plate...maybe they bought it in MacArthur Park.
Try the Mayor of Los Angeles for not using the LAPD to bust this racket. If involved, corrupt bureaucrats who issue driver licenses should fall.

for $200 you should get a complete package, fake green card, Drivers License, Social Security Card and they might even throw in voter registration...they saw you coming...
Not much --- it causes inflation --- pretty soon a family without $300 being wired in a month sees the cost of living rise that they end up far worse off. The wages are so low in Mexico -- minimum wage there amounts to about $25 a week --- the family members waiting for the monthly wire to roll in -- really don't feel the need in working.
Everything's great for the family --- lots of spending money and they seem a lot wealthier than their neighbors who are working in Mexico -- until their relative in the USA stops sending the money -- which happens quite often especially in the case of a young man who was supporting some poor wife or girlfriend in Mexico and his kids when he meets some other woman living in the USA and now has other uses for his money. A lot of young children are being abandoned by their parents and are living on the streets in every Mexican city and town.
Yes -- with their system you have to barter. First they say $200, you say $30, then they say $150, and you say $35.... you never go with the first price they tell you.
the local kcal9 tv channel news (Los Angeles County) aired a Cardinal addressing his congregation/gathering:
(not word for word), but the message was about how God would not tolerate the rich over the poor AND immigrants should all be entitled to drivers licences.
