The Usual Suspects Head AW Ban Renewal Effort
Packing Org ^ | 9/6/04

Posted on 09/06/2004 11:44:38 AM PDT by pabianice

As an American Jew, Vietnam vet, retired sailor, and enthusiastic gun owner and sportsman, I am again saddened and dismayed by American Jewry's continued, nearly monolithic effort to ban the private ownership of guns in the United States -- one of only two countries in the world which has accepted us Jews as equals and the only one to ever have gone to war to protect citizens of other countries.

packing.org is running a notice regarding the grabbers' last-ditch effort to bully Congress into renewing and strengthening the ban (see link). According to the link, grabbers will, on September 9, pull-out all the stops to force Congress to renew and expand the ban. Chief among those heading the push, according to packing.org, are:

Judy Katzen, board member, JWI, jkatzen@usa.net,

Debra Rosenbloom, Esq, Director of Programs, JWI, drosenbloom@jwi.org

Susan Peschin Consumer Fedtn of America, spechin@consumerfed.org

Jill Ward Coalition to stop gun violence, jward@csgv.org

Here we go...

"STOP THE ASSAULT!"

"For more information on assault weapons legislation go to http://www.underassault.org

"If you have any questions, please contact Jill Ward at jward@csgv.org or 202-408-0061, ext. 103.

"TELL THE PRESIDENT TO BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS NOW!

Please contact President Bush on Thursday, September 9th, 2004, and tell him to call on Congress to send him a bill to renew the assault weap- ons ban. The current ban on military-style, semi-automatic assault weap- ons is set to expire on September 13, 2004 unless Congress and the President act. We need your help!

"In 2000, George W. Bush said, "It makes no sense for assault weapons to be around our society." Tell President Bush to keep his promise and support renewal of the assault weapons ban. Recent surveys show that the majority of citizens - including gun owners, across the country in states like Florida, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Arizona support the assault weapons ban.

Assault weapons are the weapons of choice for criminals and terrorists and have no place in our communities. Every major law enforcement org- anization, representing hundreds of thousands of law enforcements off- icers, supports the assault weapons ban. On Thursday, please call the President and tell him to stand with law enforcement and support public safety. Tell him to call on Congress to send him legislation to renew the assault weapons ban TODAY!

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

STEP 1: On Thursday, September 9th, 2004, call the White House bet- ween the hours of 9 am and 5 pm EST at 202-456-1111.

STEP 2: Tell the President to listen to law enforcement and renew the ban on assault weapons before it expires on Monday, September 13th.

STEP 3: ENLIST YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO HELP ON TUESDAY. Please forward this action alert to everyone in your email address book! For more information on assault weapons, go to http://www.underassault.org

I feel sure that my grandfathers -- both run out of their native countries during pogroms -- would not recognize the Judaism practiced by such as these women.

Any emails or other communications to anyone listed above must be POLITE and concise. Liberals gloat over every nasty or badly-written note from conservatives. John Kerry is being nasty enough for everyone this political season.

"Assault weapons are the weapons of choice for criminals and terrorists and have no place in our communities"

And "banning" them will prevent these criminals and terrorists from obtaining them, right?

And what are we supposed to defend ourselves against these bad guys with, our telephone keypads?

Thanks for the info. They are never going to get my guns. I don't care what they think. Watching the siege at the Russian school strengthens my belief that we MUST keep our guns to be able to fight terrorism when it's knocking on our front door.

Frankly, as a woman and a gun owner, I enjoy owning my guns. Dismissing the constitutional right to bear arms is signing a death warrant for its citizens. Time and time again history repeats itself but people never learn.

If this thing gets passed and Bush signs it, he loses my vote. I am waiting to see what happens next week before I support Bush.

You'll need to register your Bic pens, immediately surrender them to the police assigned every school once the ink is dry, and renew your personal license yearly.

I have said that myself and it's no joke. Dubya has been warned a good portion of his base will abandon him if he does, and I don't think it's going to happen.

The NRA won't even endorse him until the AW ban sunsets!

You want to see how effective an armed populace can be when it rejects its "occupiers" or usurpers? Look to Iraq. One big reason why the US armed forces are having so much difficulty is because almost every adult male in that country is armed with a select-fire AK-47.

Now, don't misunderstand me, I'm not in any way supporting the murderous slime who are killing our soldiers -- I'm merely pointing out how effective an armed populace can be against its oppressors. There's your hard evidence. And if those b@stards over there can do it, we can do it better when/if the time ever arises.

Smart of them. NRA shouldn't endorse anybody without a reason. Dubya would have lost in 2000 without the support of gun owners, but because of what he said then about his support for renewal of the AWB they (we? - I am a brand new NRA member as of this month) sort of had to hold our noses. I hope when it does sunset he takes good counsel on this issue and decides to come our way (and not just because he knows he has to in order to win). I know there was bad blood between his dad and the NRA over the "jack booted thugs" comment after the Waco fiasco, but all they were doing was exposing that travesty for what it was. Bush Sr., being a big fan of unlimited federal police power, took great offense, and resigned his lifetime NRA membership. Don't know how much that affects Dubya's thinking on the issue, but I'm sure he's been involved in lengthy discussions with both sides. His stated position is, for now, keeping him out of serious trouble with either side, but sooner or later he will need tell the gun owning public where we stand in his view, so we will know what future strategery we need to employ < /rant >.

That's where Papa Bush lost my vote. The NRA was right--as witnessed by the subsequent Ruby Ridge and Elian Gonzales affairs. I signed up for a life membership that same day that Bush Sr renounced his.

I felt kinda bad for Bush Sr: He just didn't understand that the old rules were over and the federal commandos would be used against provably innocent American citizens--the reason Ammendment II exists!

W is being pretty sharp on this one--he said he would sign it and then generally discouraged the House from bringing it up for a vote. Having his cake and eating it too....

If the House and Senate Pubbies bring it up for a vote, against party and presidential wishes, I have no use for them anymore. Fortunately, it looks highly unlikely :)

That was sort of a turning point for me, and my support for "law and order" as it had been theretofore touted as a good Republican issue. I had followed the Ruby Ridge story as it was related in the media, didn't think much of it. But as Waco unfolded, questions arose about the justification for the initial raid, and I didn't see any. To be honest, it looked as though it was intended to have been perormed for the media, and I didn't like what I saw at all.
