September 7, 2004 -- The self-described "radical environmentalist" being sought by police for snatching his 14-month-old son from the boy's grandparents has threatened to end his life and his toddler's if he's taken into custody, his terrified mother-in-law told The Post. A sobbing Zoya Watterson of Brooklyn said yesterday that her son-in-law, Raphael Spindell, 34, "called screaming, and he said if he's arrested, 'I'll kill myself and I'll kill the baby.' "She said her daughter, Alexandra Spindell, 21, got on the phone and told her, "He's only talking, he won't do it."
The anxious grandmother said the threat was made in a phone call Sunday night the day after Spindell, a fanatic vegan, barged into her Coney Island apartment and yanked her grandson, Andre, from her arms furious that she wasn't keeping him on a strict vegan diet.
Watterson, 54, had won temporary custody of Andre on Friday in a dispute over the toddler's health, according to police.
She is now worried about the boy, who was hospitalized and diagnosed as anemic earlier this summer after becoming very ill with doctors blaming his vegan diet.

God, protect this child. Help us to help You; let us listen for Your prompting. In Jesus name...
By all means, kill yourself, but please let the baby live.
One more crackpot from the insane left showing the rest of America why we want no part of their lunacy. As for the child, too many have died in the past few days at the hands of other insane extremists. We don't need to add to that body count.
That sounds like a good plan. Please, get to step one immediately.
Vegans are a good place to start looking for potential domestic terrorists. Natural food stores are a good place to find vegans.
I bet over half of the vegans in this country have that faulty mental switch that can let them justify killing humans while feeling bad about killing animals.
Okay, so I don't like most vegans because they are liberal, brainwashed, and usually don't have a clue what they're talking about when it comes to science, politics, or the economy... That isn't my fault. I have the right to dislike ignorant activists, and enough of them are vegan to make dietary profiling a reality in the future. ;-)

Yeah, I read about this yesterday. He comes from a rich family this guy. Once again, trust fund kids and their lovely hobbies. "Radical enviormentalist" Translation: Spoiled brat who wants attention. I live in NYC and I must say it was quite something to watch them pile out of limos dressed like paupers to protest the Repub convention, or see 19 year olds wearing backpacks with emblems of every country they visited as they always seem to have enough cash to tour the globe, or watch them rappel from the Plaza, one of the most expensive Hotels in NYC while everyone else had trouble getting to work because of these scum mutts.
If God didn't want us to eat animals, He wouldn't have made them out of MEAT!
"One more crackpot from the insane left"
Your langauge only implies that there are also crackpots on the "insanse right" - which there are.
I pretty much think that crackpots are crackpots and the polticially ideology they choose to pervert is just happenstance.
This is not a political issue, it is a lunatic issue. It is only when they let the lunatics into politics that it becomes political. Madman they name is Kerry.
"God and eating animals"
I sooooooooo, totally agree!!!!!
At least he won't eat the baby.
Oh, man... Lenny Bruce lives!
Take a large Genoa salami and beat him about the head and shoulders while shouting "Respect my athoritay." (I don't know what good this will do but it just seems right.)
Right on! That's what my daughter always says.
He would have made them all smell and taste like skunks or something.
Meat plus fire equals delicious steak dinner!
your "logic" is flawed.... just because you give evil a name, doesn't make you evil too. It's like saying that religion is incidental because there are bad people in every religion. Sure there are bad Christians, that doesn't negate the evil of Islam as a whole. Sure there are bad right wingers, but that doesn't negate the evil of the left.
Amen. I know a vegan single mom who is raising her baby the same way..poor little one is pale and anemic all the time, I say it's child abuse since lack of nutrients can kill a child.
Seventh Day Adventists are not vegans, they are lacto-ovo vegetarians -- HUGE difference. I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 29 years and am in absolutely perfect health. Vegans begin to go into obvious physical decline within a year or two, as the human body is just not designed to function without consuming animal products. Infants born to already depleted vegan mothers are sick from birth, and decline quickly if kept on this type of diet or on their mothers' depleted breast milk.
I don't disagree with your thinking. However, my point was not to debate the evil of the left, just the particular lunacy of this individual.
To point to a lunatic as a representation of the evil of the left is where the flawed logic lies, because it is, in fact, not representative and easily dismissed.
Thus, you weaken your argument that the left is evil by pointing to an indivudal circumstance as proof when the actions of that individual are neither representative nor relevant to the political point you are trying to make.
The logic follows that if a right-wing lunactic does not despoil the right, the same is true of the left. But we know the left is evil and so should use other, better, more poignant examples.
"Dietary profiling" - I like it!
Takes tot into the woods; Vegan dad says he'll kill son if cops come
A fanatic vegan who kidnapped his 14-month-old son in Brooklyn is hiding in the woods - and vowing to kill the boy if cops come after him, his mother-in-law said yesterday.
Screaming that the toddler was not eating healthy food, Raphael Spindell, 34, snatched little Andre from his maternal grandmother in Coney Island Saturday and has been missing with the boy and the child's mother since.
Spindell, who calls himself Archangel and lists his occupation as "radical environmentalist" in an Internet profile, called the grandmother, Zoya Watterson, 54, later Saturday.
"He said they were in the forest and he told me that if police tried to arrest him, he'd kill himself and the baby," Watterson said in her native Russian, breaking down in tears. In a subsequent call, Spindell claimed the baby and his mother no longer were with him, said Watterson.
Spindell lists "primitivism," "green anarchy" and animal rights among his hobbies.
Police said yesterday they were searching for the boy, though Spindell gave his mother-in-law no further hint about his whereabouts. Spindell and his wife, Alexandra, 21, follow a strict vegan diet that excludes not only meat but any animal product, such as eggs and milk, Watterson said.
The grandmother was granted custody of Andre in July, after the Administration for Children's Services found he was suffering from malnutrition, according to ACS spokeswoman Lisi deBourbon.
"We confirmed reports of malnourishment and what we call failure to thrive" - meaning the boy was not being cared for properly, said deBourbon.
Spindell has a hair-trigger temper, according to his mother-in-law, who believes he needs psychiatric help. "He goes ballistic over little things," Watterson said. "He gets enraged when he sees ads for cigarettes or alcohol."
His rage was on display Saturday morning. Shortly after Alexandra arrived at her mother's W. Eighth St. apartment to deliver diapers and nurse Andre, Raphael began pounding on the door, Watterson said. "He started yelling and screaming that I'm a bad grandmother, that I don't do anything the way he wants it," she said.
Watterson said she was concerned about the toddler's diet. "It's laughable what they wanted to feed him," she said. "I slipped the baby some bread once in a while."
The couple, who live in a motor home and are often on the road, met at either a bar or a party for vegans six years ago, when Alexandra was a 15-year-old Lincoln High School student, said her mom.
"She's been brainwashed, and I told her that," said Watterson, who emigrated with her daughter from Moscow in 1995. "And she told me, 'Yes, my brain is clean and yours and everyone else's isn't.'"
But Watterson said the boy was better off with his parents than he was at the foster home he was placed in before she got custody. "He came back from foster care pale, traumatized, crying and shaking at night," she said. "Before that, he never cried. He was the happiest baby ever."

Fish oil versus flaxoil
BETHESDA, MARYLAND. There is considerable evidence that fish and fish oils are beneficial to heart health, reduce the risk of cancer, and benefit mental health. The "active" components of fish oils are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid with 20 carbon atoms in its backbone, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid with 22 carbon atoms. Both are members of the omega-3 group of essential fatty acids. EPA and DHA are found exclusively in marine animals; fatty fish such as herring, sardines, salmon and fresh tuna are the best sources.
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is another omega-3 fatty acid found in flaxseed and flaxseed oil. ALA has 18 carbon atoms in its backbone and can be converted to EPA in the body (in the liver) by the addition of two carbon atoms. EPA, in turn, can be converted to DHA. Because the typical American diet is relatively low in fish intake ALA becomes a crucial source of the EPA and DHA required for optimum health. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have just completed a study designed to determine just how much ALA is actually converted to EPA in the body. Their study included eight healthy subjects who were fed a standard diet for three weeks and then given one gram of ALA labeled with an isotope tracer. The diet was beef-based in order to avoid extraneous sources of EPA and DHA. The researchers measured blood plasma concentrations of ALA, EPA and DHA 8, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 168 hours after ingestion of the labeled ALA.
The results show that only about 0.2 per cent of the ALA (2 mg) was actually converted to EPA. In contrast, about 23 per cent of the EPA was available for conversion to DHA. The researchers also noted that the half-life (the time it takes to reduce initial concentration by 50 per cent) of ALA in blood plasma was quite low at about one hour. In comparison, the half-life of EPA was 67 hours and that of DHA 20 hours.
The researchers conclude that ALA is not a viable source of EPA and DHA and cannot replace fish and fish oils in the diet. Editor's Note: According to this new data a tablespoon of flax oil would only result in the synthesis of about 30 mg of EPA - far less than the recommended daily intake of 220 mg.

Raw and Living-Foods Vegan Eco-Village Forming!
I thought this might be of interest to some of you who may feel as I do, that living in today's society and attempting to be an ethical and/or health motivated vegan is difficult to impossible and have dreamed of having a place to call your own. Waking up in the mornings, it's getting harder to look in the mirror and feel that I am living within my value systems, to that end, I'm getting together people in order to start a new Eco-Village in beautiful tropical Belize (Central America) called "Adahy Wakiza" (formed from the Cherokee words for "Lives in the Woods" and "Determined Warrior"). Diets will be primarily raw, whole, vegan-organic (no animal inputs!), wild-crafted and wild-harvested vegetarian (vegan) foods. The village will be completely sustainable and self-sufficient. Several non-profit oriented programs will be administered from Adahy Wakiza, including a Wildlife Sanctuary/Nature Preserve for endangered rainforest flora and fauna, sustainability training center, and raw vegan education and outreach services.
Talk about some whacked moral priorities!
Elsewhere, on the WTC Internet Remembrance Campaign site, Reverend Raphael Spindell writes: Let us mourn for the victims of the September 11, 2001, WTC tragedy but let us not forget the other 6,000 Americans who died unnecessary deaths that same day because of preventable diet-based illnesses, and let us not forget the 9,000 Africans who died from AIDS that same day and the 28,000 who died from starvation, and that has been happening every day since. We need to keep September 11 in our minds, but we also need to understand it in a global perspective.
People are made of meat, too, Mr. Dahmer.
Ping
AIDS, hamburgers, whatever it takes.
This fellow sees himself as the next Jim Jones, I suspect. They all may die drinking organic Kool-Aid, but it certainly would prove their point!
Assuming he doesn't 'commit suicide by cop', I think he'll be getting together with some folks he wasn't counting on, and living in a place that will be a far cry from a 'Eco-Village Eden'.
Ohhhhhhh! I see! Just because I like MEAT in my diet (like every other omnivore) somehow I'm a cannibal? I'd starve to death before I'd eat another human!
Get a grip on reality, wacko.
Human beings are endowed by God with the supreme intellect among earth fauna; after all, He gave us dominion over them. Because of this, we have a more developed moral sense - it is "wrong" to kill and eat other humans. If cattle, dear, pigs, bear, chicken, fish, etc., etc. could talk, read and write, create music and literature, establish laws and government, etc. I don't think I'd eat them, either.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I'm gonna grill a nice juicy steak! You, on the other hand, can go graze at the salad bar.
Just pointing out the logical inconsistency in your original argument. Now you amend that argument with an appeal to the supernatural. Figures.
You do know that there are a few humans who can't talk, read and write, create music or literature, establish laws or governments, etc? I hope they're safe while you're around.
I'm just playing with you, btw. I've been known to eat chicken and such from time to time--more due to my inherent weakness in the face of a juicy cut than from a heightened sense of moral superiority
Nothing wrong with eating meat. People eat meat but not shove hamburgers down their throats like Ole Billygoat. Technically human muscle is 'meat' but we are sentient beings and it is unnatural for humans to eat humans. Lions do not eat other lions. It's also interesting to note that human do not eat carnivore flesh either as a rule. Cows are herbivores. I always wondered why that is. Anyway, if one is going to eat meat the healthiest option is meat hunted for the pot. Otherwise, fresh chicken from a live poultry place is best. This is meaningless if you live in a rural area but I live in NY and in my mind I have a one hndred acre farm property LOL.
I work for rastafarians in their little independent health store. I get lots of SDA clients coming in and out. Most aren't self righteous a$$holes unlike the trust fund babies I used to meet at NYPIRG and PETA club meetings. Most of my clients are vegans, but they are very rigorious about nutrition and supplementing their diet.
"This guy needs to be locked up in a leather padded cell."
I don't think he's gonna like his "special" prison diet.
What about the ones from 9/11? Was he supposed to help them as well? Did he?
You missed the part where I call on God to help us listen for His prompting. To listen for a way to help God stop the evil...
Your question actually indicates faith - it's the kind of faith that we as children have when we get ourselves hurt, then we blame our Mom for not helping us. We are not denying the existence of Mom, we just feel that if Mom is so powerful, so authoritarian, why didn't she stop us from hurting ourselves?
God didn't cause 9-11. People did. Thirty years of warnings and political blindness and disregard for the signs that war was coming is what caused 9-11. Thirty years of turning stupidly away from evil is what caused 9-11. Thirty years of God pointing out evil over and over and over again, missed opportunities to stop this madness, and to never know 9-11. God cannot force us to do anything. If we refuse to follow, then whose fault is that?
Still, God was there on 9-11.
On that day, over 30,000 did NOT die who could have died - thanks to workers who followed the promptings of God and did their job above and beyond the call of duty. On that day, the passengers of Flight 93 listened to the promptings of God and stopped an evil that would have stripped us of our Government. Since that day, a thousand times over, we could have died by the same hand of evil, but someone, somewhere, listened to the still small voice and checked again, looked again, stopped the evil again.
When good happens, and God is the reason, we say it's us. When bad happens, and we are to blame, we say it's God.
Bad things happen, and they are caused by evil. Good people die every day, and I have known many of them. Loss occurs, and there is no one to take away my sorrow. But rather than curse the darkness, I have decided to fight it. To light it. To stop it. God has given me this, and I must rise to the occasion...
God is not to blame for the stupidity and evil in the world. God told us there would be evil and suffering, and it is wrong for anyone to tell us otherwise. There will be wars, killing, danger, and evil. But we have been given a Hope, and way to fight back - a Savior.
The only reason we are still here is because over and over again, God steps into the breach and saves us, fights alongside us. The only reason I am with you tonight is because, even in my darkest hour, I know it was God who brought the light and will bring the light again -
God is not the darkness - He is the light in the darkness. I choose to follow the Light, even through the darkness...
