SENATE COVERAGE -- (September / October '04)
http://www.senate.gov/ ^ | 9-7-04 | CONGRESS

Posted on 09/07/2004 4:13:07 AM PDT by OXENinFLA

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Majority and Minority

Roll Call Votes can be found here.

This is a good idea, but maybe you can get JR to make a permanent link on the front page so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle? Maybe we need a FReeper Library.

I agree this is a great idea. I am hopefl that, with the reelection of GW, we have a chance to have some good things happen in DC. I'm thinking tax code, social security for starters. There will be things I won't personally like much, but I know I can't have it all.

THEY'RE BACK...........

Yes, Congress is back in session once again ready to pass laws that tell us how we should live our lives.

My guess is that not much will go on today in the way of actual Senate business but I'm sure there will be come campaign speeches on the floor today. I wonder if KENNEDY'S hangover will allow him to rant and rave today?

Kerry.............""W" stands for wrong" What a dork.

Floor Calendar for Tuesday, September 7, 2004

The Senate will convene at 12:00pm for a period of morning business until the hour of 5:00pm. At 5:30pm the Senate will vote on the nominations and then will turn to consideration of executive calendar # 787, Michael Watson.

Yes, thanks. Please put me on your list. I actually have to work out of the house for the next couple of weeks (I can usually work from home)so I won't be able to follow along as much as I usually can, but that's a short term thing. Again, I think this is a great idea because it's going to be time to focus intently on the legislative process and this is a great way to facilitate that effort.

I'm in JAX. FRANCES hit me w/ some winds and alot of rain and I lost power for a day and a half but we didn't get hit as hard as further south.

Don't worry about replying to every ping. Just remember this thread when you're watching the Senate and need a place to rant about politics. };)

President's Remarks at the 2004 Republican National Convention

My plan begins with providing the security and opportunity of a growing economy. We now compete in a global market that provides new buyers for our goods, but new competition for our workers. To create more jobs in America, America must be the best place in the world to do business. (Applause.) To create jobs, my plan will encourage investment and expansion by restraining federal spending, reducing regulation, and making the tax relief permanent. (Applause.) To create jobs, we will make our country less dependent on foreign sources of energy. (Applause.) To create jobs, we will expand trade and level the playing field to sell American goods and services across the globe. (Applause.) And we must protect small business owners and workers from the explosion of frivolous lawsuits that threaten jobs across America. (Applause.)

Another drag on our economy is the current tax code, which is a complicated mess -- filled with special interest loopholes, saddling our people with more than six billion hours of paperwork and headache every year. The American people deserve -- and our economic future demands -- a simpler, fairer, pro-growth system. (Applause.) In a new term, I will lead a bipartisan effort to reform and simplify the federal tax code. (Applause.)

Congress has only few days to tackle busy agenda

WASHINGTON -- How much is left to do as Congress returns today from its six-week summer break? So much that plans are already under way for a lame-duck session after the Nov. 2 election.

~~~~
But many pending measures won't survive. The dead and dying include bills to extend the expiring ban on assault weapons, limit class-action suits against corporations, repeal overtime rules that went into effect last month, reshape special education or give states a bigger role in the federal Head Start program.
