Baby rescued from garbage
Emma Poole and Sean Myers Calgary Herald
September 8, 2004
A woman walking her dog in northwest Calgary saved the life of a newborn when she uncovered a baby boy wrapped in bloody towels inside a garbage bag, paramedics said.
The woman heard the baby's cries around 8:50 p.m. in front of 71 Hawkstone Dr. N.W. Too nervous to open the black trash bag in front of the home, the woman pulled it aside and nudged it to confirm she heard human noises. She tore open the bag to find the baby.
Investigators believe the baby was hours old when found. The baby was born in the home to a 15-year-old girl.
"All things considered, the baby is doing remarkably well," said acting EMS Supt. Mike Plato. The baby's umbilical cord was intact.
The girl is believed to live in the home with her mother and two young siblings. The mother's boyfriend was home when police arrived.
Three women rushed the baby to the nearby home of Sahar El Bably, who called 911.
"They took the baby inside and started to care for it. (The baby) looked wet and bloody," said El Bably.
Plato said it's lucky the woman heard the child crying because of the cool temperature, about 10 C.
"(The baby) couldn't have survived for more than a few hours," said Plato.
Today is trash collection day in the neighbourhood, which meant the bags would have been collected in the early morning and taken to a landfill.
The baby was taken to Foothills Hospital in stable condition suffering from mild hypothermia.
Schoolmates said the petite teenage mother was quiet and kept to herself. The girl, clutching her stomach, was escorted out of her house by paramedics.
Police found the mother inside the home. It's believed she had given birth inside her bedroom without anyone in the home knowing. She was taken to Foothills Hospital.
"I'm shocked. I was shivering when the ladies came and told me that (there was a baby in a trash bag)," said El Bably.
Police haven't determined whether charges will be laid.
"You've got a young mother who is scared out of her mind. There's a lot of factors here," said Insp. Brooke Bishop. "Who knows what she was thinking at the time."
Scared or not, punishment for attempted murder should be swift and just.
Poor little tyke! I hope the baby goes to a good home!
I'm betting that her mom's boyfriend is the father.
What the garbage in the can, or from the garbage parents?
"Who knows what she was thinking at the time."
It's pretty obvious what she was thinking, Sherlock.
If ever there was an argument for horse-whipping someone, this is it.
Indeed. And I'm betting she wasn't the one who threw the baby in the garbage bag either.
WHAT??? Attempted murder is what she deserves. Throw the book at her! She's a cold blooded killer!
I'll bet even money that the mother's boyfriend was the father and that he raped the poor girl.
I can't tell from this story. It did say "no one knew she gave birth" yet is also say she is petite. I want to wait for more info. Maybe boyfriend did the deed..both fathering and throwing away.
"Yet it also says"
She should be steralized!
As should the father of the baby, right?
It's her baby. She should have immediately called the police. There's no excuse.
Show her the same mercy she showed her baby.
How do you know? Maybe mom's boyfriend is the dad, and wanted to dump the "evidence". And what plans had this little girl's adult mother made for the delivery of her daughter's baby? When you've got a full-term pregnant 15-year-old at home, you don't just leave her on own to figure out what to do when the baby comes. I think mom and the boyfriend belong in the slammer, and the girl needs help and support.
Sick. I bet some local goody-two-shoes tries to go to court and have the baby returned to Mommy Dearest.
Now wait a minute! She's old enough to decide whether to get an abortion or not, so she should be held responsible for her other decisions as well. Late, late tern abortions are illegal!
Why didn't she notify the police if someone else tried to kill her baby?!
There's no excuse.
I don't know. Maybe she was locked in her room or drugged or etc. etc. etc. You act as if anyone thinks the MAN in the story might have some fault it is impossible. Do you hate little girls?
Hmmm. If this had happened when abortion was not legal, it would have been blamed on her inability to receive an abortion. So now what?
I hate 15 year old teen agers who are baby killers, yes. She's not a "little girl." She's 15!
The girl is a minor child, dependent upon her mom and the boyfriend. She had just given birth and then put the baby in a bag and took it outside to the garbage, with no one knowing or hearing? She woould have been screaming in labor and in shock afterward. There is much more to this story, and it is way too soon to condemn her.
I am entirely pro-life, and I am compassionate. The two sentiments are not incompatible, but create an important alliance to combat the abortionists.
And I'm saying you have jumped the gun in accusing HER of being the baby killer. There isn't enough info on that in the article.
I think she should get the death penalty... If that was enough, WTF was she thinking. This is what we get for democratic liberals telling america's young people that babies aren't living.
I'm pro-life also. And it makes me sick to think of anyone doing anything like this to a little baby. But something seems strange in this story. There is no way this girl had this baby "without anyone knowing". The adults were in the house. To say the girl was a willing participant to the attempted murder can't be drawn from this article.
She gave birth. Where's her baby? Not with her? Call the police. End of story.
I have a 15 year old daughter. She knows what "killing" means.
Pro-Life bump!
I love how you are so black and white in your thinking. I guess since those kids in Beslan didn't fight their way out of their captivity they deserved to die then? There were obviously 15 year olds there you know. They knew they were being held by bad guys and they did nothing. It's so black and white....sarcasm off.
A petite 15 yr od who just gave birth is in terrible physical and emotional condition for hours. That's why women have medical care when in labor and afterward. We NEED help then.
"You've got a young mother who is scared out of her mind. There's a lot of factors here," said Insp. Brooke Bishop. "Who knows what she was thinking at the time."
OK, so now the Crown must consider what the mother was "thinking" before criminal charges are filed. Doubtful that anyone will wonder what the baby boy was thinking all wrapped up in bloody towels inside a garbage bag.
I needed the medical help the 24 hours I was in labor BEFORE my first child was born. The cases where girl has baby in night club and keeps on dancing just aren't that common. The article says she was holding her stomach. She was in pain. I still think (although the article doesn't say) that the adults did this. The fact the girl hadn't aborted the baby early on also leads me to this conclusion.
It's Canada, slap on the wrist. Society has failed her, or so the story will go.
These are what I want to know.
Ping!
I have a very strong sense of right and wrong.
So murder is a "gray?" area? That's what the abortionists say, anyway. Our laws depend on the meaning of "is?"
A 15 year old is old enough to know what murder is.
I guess since those kids in Beslan didn't fight their way out of their captivity they deserved to die then?
Oh please! Those kids were held captive by military weapons. That's different then the ability to seek aid from the kazillions of social programs we have in this country.
The girls baby is dead. She's the mother. No lame "She's just a little girl" crap will work on me. A baby is dead, get it? It's her baby. She's 15 years old! Where was she?
"Murder is only considered valid when.......????"
Bingo! You win! There is nothing in this article that says she wasn't being held captive. That is the assumption you have made. That is all I am saying. It may very well be that she did it all. But to jump to that conclusion without facts is plain stupid.
BTW ...the baby is NOT dead. I don't even know why I'm having a discussion with you at all since it is obvious you didn't even read the article before jumping to your conclusion.
That's revolting!
Nothing says she was. If there was trouble in the household, why did she stay there? There's Social Services all over the place. She's still at fault. She's old enough to seek help.
Although that was the plan. So, I guess we should just see the attempted murder as a non event, and ignore the whole thing. After all, millions of infants are slaughtered every day. What's the big deal about attempting one more, right?
I think the woman should be held accountable, but I value innocent life, so I guess it's just me.
Woman? At 15? Whatever. Btw, you have no idea what her living conditions were. None. The article only states she was scared. And the "Mom's" boyfriend was home when police arrived. Have you a crystal ball that tells you the 15 yr old kid wasn't being abused? I've had personal experience with this sort of thing. The girl was returned home and beaten for getting help. Youth services turned a blind eye to what was happening. They are fallible.
So we have a child having a child and everything is her fault, not the Moms or Moms BF. Yeah. Right. You're a man, aren't you. A woman would be concerned for both children.
So is attempted murder, especially of a new born baby!
"Sahar El Bably"
I was wondering about that name as well. If there are any male relatives she may soon be a statistic from honor killing.
"And it makes me sick to think of anyone doing anything like this to a little baby. But something seems strange in this story."
Agreed. There are some things left unsaid in this article. Did she know she was pregnant? There have been those rare tragically clueless girls who didn't know they were pregnant until they went into labor. And how did she deliver without anyone hearing the hubbub? Did the boyfriend know? Was he involved in any way?
That being said, there's no reason, short of being a poor muslim girl who can't leave the house w/o a male relative, that a 15 year old can't drop a baby off at a hospital or even on someone's front stoop. Wrap the baby up warmly, ring the doorbell, and run, stupid. Don't put the poor little thing in the trash.
Totally agree. The story does say she is petite which would make it harder to hide a pregnancy I would think.
If the mother wanted to throw the baby in the garbage isn't that her "choice?"
