Per FoxNews: Pentagon questioning PO Box Number
FoxNews | 10 SEP 2004 | me

Posted on 09/10/2004 11:09:40 AM PDT by aft_lizard

James Rosen just reported that the Pentagon questions the use of a PO Box on a memo, and that the PO Box may never have been used by that unit saying it seems highly unlikely that they would have PO Box containing sequential numbers. Standard military practice has always been to place the actual physical address on the letter head.

PO Box 34567

I tried to read everything here yesterday. Did anyone catch this on FR? Pretty easy to overlook, but it does make the likelihood these are fake go up by logrithmic proportions..

I wondered about that. Perhaps the forger couldn't find the old address (presumably not a facility on an AFB or Federal land) so they whipped up something.

FReepers have discussed the PO Box and the Zip Code ad naseum yesterday.

A point was raised by one FReeper that the PO Boxes back
in '72 and '73 would have been numbered from 001 to 999
with the last two digits of the zip code as a the fourth and fifth digit of the zip code.

Whoever forged these documents is pretty darn stupid.

I asked this question earlier today and was directed to the thread from yesterday. The thread had several hundred posts so I didn't go through all of them. I'm glad this is being questioned. It looked unusual to me and seems to be something that could easily be verfied.

my new theory: these are faked so badly that they were originally an DNC internal parody/joke that someone took the wrong way and grabbed onto it as a "find".

Another item going into 'The Forger is a Moron' column...

Honestly, it looks like this was done with no research, in about ten minutes. The docs passed through the Kerry Kampaign and through CBS over SIX WEEKS and NONE of them noticed a thing.

I'm not sure the Left could win this election if they really tried.

Oh, that is a great point! With 13 years in the Army and ARNG, I can say that I have never, ever even heard of a unit that used a PO Box for an address.

In fact, the letterhead must include the actual 'physical address' of the unit.

Hello fox?:

Go to the smithsonian and find the military curator and see if they have military typwriters from the era!

Is there a former quartermaster who would know what typewriters the military used in that era?

This is SO easy to investigate!

I looked at this yesterday:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1211150/posts?page=192#192

It seems that the P.O. Box is real, though I agree it seems more than weird that it is the "address of record" on the document.

Edwards just challenged Bush to comment on this hoax. I guess he should be careful what he asks for because Bush can say that the Pentagan also believes Dan Rather mislead the voting public for personal ideological purposes.

Yes - questioned early yesterday my several including myself - I was in the same TX ANG unit as GWB (overlapping service dates) - I pulled all my old files - Only the physical address for Ellington - NOT a PO Box

Also all officer signature blocks on my documents carry a designation following their rank of TX ANG - that is missing form the CBS faked memos

"Whoever forged these documents is pretty darn stupid."

Sure looks whoever did this is going to have to stand behind Dan Rather in the stupid line.

Yesterday was the best day on FR in a long time. It harkens back to the days of Quidum, blue dresses, DNA, the meaning of IS.

Definitely an A day!

I do, however, question the use of the number in early 1970s.

To me, this is a stronger indication of a forgery than the whole proportional type business.

Proportional type is impossible with a typewriter. So is the centering that they did. Also the use of a lowercase 'L' for a one, which is just a way to trick MS Word into not superscripting '1st'. There is more evidence here of forgery than their was for murder at the OJ trail.

I checked this out. The same address appears on a legit Bush military form, but it is for the 147th Fighter Interceptor GROUP. While that might be real address for the Group, this same address on the fake Bush docs is at the top of the page for the SQUADRON. Why would the squadron have the same P.O. Box as the Group? Can any former ANG people help me out on this one? My units never used P.O. Boxes.
