Man named in Bush memo left Guard before document was written

BY PETE SLOVER

The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN, Texas - (KRT) - The man named in a disputed memo as exerting pressure to "sugar coat" President Bush's military record left the Texas Air National Guard a year and a half before the memo was supposedly written, his own service record shows.

An order obtained by The Dallas Morning News shows that Col. Walter "Buck" Staudt was honorably discharged on March 1, 1972. CBS News reported this week that a memo in which Staudt was described as interfering with officers' negative evaluations of Bush's service, was dated Aug. 18, 1973.

That added to mounting questions about the authenticity of documents that seem to suggest Bush sought special favors and did not fulfill his service.

Staudt, who lives in New Braunfels, Texas, did not return calls seeking comment. His discharge paper was among a packet of documents obtained by The Dallas Morning News from official sources during 1999 research into Bush's Guard record.

You silly people, the National Guard reactivated him for a couple of days so he could come back and sign the memo.

Now, does it not seem that with this proof CBS will HAVE to admit they are holding forgeries?

OK I'll explain ONLY because you are new here.

The (/lib spin) means liberal spin OFF- humor

The 'seriousness of the charge' was a phrase used by the libs during the Anita Hill hearings to try to bring down Clarence Thomas with no evidence.

Stick around, you'll enjoy it here.

Having put up with Rather for years - with no way to counter - it's like the Swifts - finally getting (after provocation) finally getting their say.

Bye - bye Dan - take your millions and get out of our lives!

Rather's insistence on defending the authenticity of the documents is bordering on lunacy. Why doesn't he just hang the forgers or those who passed the forgeries to him out to dry?

He looked and sounded absolutely wrung out tonight. He hasn't slept and he's obviously been talking (or shouting) all day long--his voice was shot.

All I can figure is that he has calculated that destroying his credibility is preferable to revealing his source(s). Who could be so important that Rather is throwing away his reputation to protect? That's what I want to know.

You know, I think I might be too!

We are witnessing and actually participiating in an historic event. The meltdown of a network and a presidential campaign. If things develop as I forsee them, I think this could be somewhere between a mondale and dukakis sized drubbing.

Since you are still damp, that 'Ouch!' was very gently administered.

I got mine in 2001 and didn't come back for a LONG time.
