A "sticky" article feature is needed so this, or something like this, could stay at the top for a period of time.

You know, there wouldnt be this problem if you kept the rules for EVERYONE as the same, it seems as if SOME people can post Vanities but others cant
I say if some can then so can others

I definitely agree. People need to quit posting a new thread every time a thought pops into their head. The Dan Rather memo-gate story should have a couple dozen threads, not the literally hundreds that it does right now.

OMG!
You noticed too?
Bless your heart.

This is an auto-visual age. Here is short movie that can be used to teach newbies about posting.

Can we have an option to search for articles by author?

Mods have posted this same thing from time to time in the past, yet it continues. Perhaps it is time to start sanctions against some of the chronic vanity offenders. How about a 30 day posting priv suspension? Even better, how about a 10 day posting priv suspension for everyone that replies to one of these mindless vanities?

Thanks, we all need a refresher from time to time.

Bless you!! I am so glad to see that I was not the only one getting pissed off with the duplicate threads, the vanities and the general abuse of posting guideliness and netiquette in general.
Now, can we have just one Hurricane (Hurricane nane here) thread, one Kerry is going down thread and one forged documents thread? Don't people understand the purpose of focused discussion?
It is good to see that you are whipping people into shape now. The next several weeks are going to be brutal on you Mods. Thanks in advance for your work.

Thank you. The duplicates have been driving me crazy lately. And the poster always says they searched before posting -- even when it's plainly the next article below theirs in Breaking News.

I'm a relative newbie, having only been registered for about the last 6 weeks, although I had been a lurker for a few months before that. I have a few comments on some of the posts.
In article 27, isom35 asked about rigging things so that a new person can't post for a week. What drove me to convert from a lurker to a participant here was a news report on one of our local tv stations about President Bush that had not been picked up on FR and I thought deserved to be covered, see
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1184447/posts . While I don't disagree with a probationary period I think some mechanism should be in place to bend the rules at the discretion of the moderator.
Another question comes to mind, in that, when I've created new articles, I've paraphrased something from the tv or a line from a speech that seemed significant, in which case I can't cite a link to an article or a web page. Since I've been talking about "news", I posted them in News/Activism. Is this acceptable?.
I would also add a yes to "stickies".
Finally let me say what a great bunch of people you (Freepers), all are. My experience here has been nothing but positive.

BUMP!
The main reason I dislike duplicates (which I've noticed a lot of recently) is they scatter comments. It's just so much better to have one consolidated thread--one article along with all replies.
I appreciate when when folks type "Already posted" and include a link. Otherwise I might miss the original comments.
