A Japanese man who stabbed to death eight school children in 2001 has been executed, domestic media have reported.

Mamoru Takuma, 40, was executed by hanging, along with another convicted murderer who killed three gangsters.

He killed seven girls and one boy, aged between six and eight, while another 13 students and two teachers were wounded.

Takuma admitted the killings and is said to have shown little remorse, reportedly telling the court in June 2003 that he could have killed more children if he had attacked a kindergarten.

True. The Japanese are VERY HARD on their criminals. Not to mention, their police have a 95% conviction rate. In their prisons, the scum are up at dawn, get a small amount of food, and get their a$$es WORKED off, until dinner. Prison in Japan is no summer camp like the USA, especially, Club Fed.

Standard operating procedure in Japan is also to announce executions after the fact so there is no chance for protest vigils and the like from the 5% or so of the public opposed to capital punishment. FWIW, this scumbags murder spree was cut short by a male teacher armed with a chair. I remember the incident well as we lived in Japan at the time.

Thats what I like about Japan they are ecology concious. No need filling the landfills with bodies full of toxic and lethal chemicals or wasting valuable electricity. A simple rope for hanging is the epitome of ecology and recycling. You can use it over and over and over ;-)

People who've lived in Japan will correct me if I'm wrong, but to my knowledge your sentence in Japan really depends on the degree of remorse you show, and how well you apologize to the victims, the family, the judge, the court, etc. I read that US servicemen arrested in Japan often have trouble in Japanese courts & draw long sentences because it's not part of "our culture" to apologize profusely the way the Japanese expect.

As the old saying goes - justice delayed is justice denied.

We're even worse, we don't execute anybody here, not even for treason. We even take the child molesters and give them a separate area in gaol - my idea would be to put them in with the rest, and a different colour uniform to identify them to the other prisoners. Good for Japan.

And normally it would be the same here. What this article doesn't mention is that Takuma stopped the appeals process himself and asked to executed at the earliest possible date. They obliged him. Anyone who thinks Japanese justice is swift needs to take a look at the Aum trials. Over 10 years after the subway gas attacks and still going on.
