"[Rep. Chris] Cannon [R-UT] drums on immigration despite voters"
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 9/14/04 | Kirsten Stewart

Posted on 09/14/2004 1:31:11 PM PDT by lonewacko_dot_com

He has been accused of promoting mass immigration, terrorism and amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Utah Republican Congressman Chris Cannon has paid a political price for his efforts to "fix" the nation's "broken" immigration system - not to mention mowing through 92 percent of his $472,000 campaign stash in a primary faceoff with Matt Throckmorton, an ardent advocate of immigration restrictions.

And though Cannon beat Throckmorton and is favored to glide past Democratic challenger Beau Babka to a fifth term, that alone doesn't account for his persistence as an immigration reform maverick who backs legislation apparently out of step with Utah voters - begging the question: Why?

...a survey of Cannon's financial disclosures since 1996 shows Washington, D.C., and out-of-state interests steadily replacing his Utah support. Eight years ago, 85 percent of the individuals backing Cannon hailed from Utah; today locals comprise just 16 percent of his donor base.

A close look at who is giving also shows a sudden jump in contributions from immigration attorneys - 23 of whom have poured $20,900 into Cannon's war chest... At least five of the attorneys serve on the executive committee of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, which helped Cannon draft the "AgJobs" bill...

Cannon has whored himself out to the businesses employing iilegals and sold out the American people.

Just like Bush and Dreier.

That can be said of the most of our elected "representatives of the people." I question which people they are representing.

Mexico. I used to think it was just the California Legislature, now it's becoming more and more evident that Democrats have totally abandoned this country, but Republicans more and more are giving them a run for their pesos.

Both parties now represent Mexico, for the most part.

Question to ask the SLT is why didn't they get this info out in time for the primary? Also weren't they one of the papers bashing Throckmorton for having out of state donors such as project USA?

You're right. The politicians of this country do not represent Americans. They are destroying America at an ever increasing pace.

A complete gridlock would be better representation than Americans get presently from either party.

Our votes don't count anymore when the subject is Mexico.

What is troubling here is that the voters of Utah had an opportunity to vote for someone who understands the immigration issue, and didn't do so.

To be fair, Wal-Mart, Tyson Foods and countless other businesses are getting exactly what they paid for.

How did the RNC act on this? I know the GOP establishment didn't want Toomey winning in PA because for some reason, they see weak incumbents as better than strong challengers.

From http://www.projectusa.org/ezine/2004/05-05-cannon-whopper.html

"Instead, we get the Salt Lake Tribune publishing editorials attacking the "harsh" critics of the Cannon "guest worker program," and unleashing a reporter named Kirsten Stewart to do her best to throw the election on Saturday to Cannon -- a reporter who admitted in an email to ProjectUSA that Cannon feeds her information for her articles."

I guess there's good "feeding" and bad "feeding." I'd need to see examples.
