A Kerry fan gets fired, and then hired, for her politics. (Bumpersticker Alabama woman)
Slate ^ | 9/14/2004 | Timothy Noah

Posted on 09/14/2004 4:16:04 PM PDT by GeorgiaFreeper

Lynne Gobbell of Moulton, Ala., who on Sept. 9 was fired from her job at Enviromate, a company that makes housing insulation, for driving to work with a Kerry-Edwards bumper sticker in the rear windshield of her Chevy Lumina.

-----snip-----

The story was picked up by Daily Kos, a political Web log, and spread quickly around the Web. By this morning, Geddes, who has declined to comment publicly on the matter, had apparently had enough of the bad publicity. Through an intermediary, he offered Gobbell an apology and said she could have her old job back. But Gobbell said she wouldn't return without some written guarantee that Geddes wouldn't turn around and fire her once he was out of the spotlight. Then, late this afternoon, Kerry himself phoned Gobbell. "He was telling me how proud he was that I stood up," Gobbell told me. "He'd read the part where Phil said I could either work for him or work for John Kerry. He said, 'you let him know you're working for me as of today.' I was just so shocked."

Gobbell accepted Kerry's job offer, "so I reckon I'll be working for John Kerry." Kerry left it that someone from his campaign would call Gobbell to work out the details. Let's hope there's quick follow-through (I'll be checking!), because Gobbell told me she couldn't wait to tell Geddes that she had a better offer.

Gee, I thought Kerry distanced himself from Kos after Kos said "Screw 'em" when Americans were brutally murdered in Falluja. I guess he still logs in for the latest insanity from the America-hating left.

Knowing skerry he will change his mind about hiring her tomorrow and she will again be out of a job.

Can you imagine opening the door and having this smiling face asking for you to vote for J F'n Kerry. I am sure she will garner him many votes.

LOL! Considering all the ads Kerry is running about unemployed people in Ohio because of Republicans, they should all call him up and ask for their own jobs with him.

"they should all call him up and ask for their own jobs with him."

good point

after all, the only way Democrats know how to increase employment is through government hiring, make work programs, etc.

they don't know how the real, actually-existing economy works . . . ;)

Bwahahaha
Kerry is gonna guarantee her a job once HE'S OUTTA THE LIMELIGHT......

She will be back crying in a few weeks....if she can get back in her spotlight..

What a dunce...she shoulda gone back to work for her old boss...knowing full well
that he probably is a man of his word...and the left wing media would be happy to give him more bad publicity if he fired her again...

All she had to do is swallow her pride...go back to work..show up on time and do her assigned work...

Kerry will dump her at first opportunity......

Betrayal is his stock in trade....it's how he made Forbes the big bucks.....

imo

Want to really kill Kerry in the polls? Point out his lily-white campaign staff and ask him, "So, Senator Kerry, do you have any African-Americans or Hispanics in mind to serve in key positions in a Kerry administration?" He can't win. If he says nothing, people like Al Sharpton will turn on him. If he names liberal blacks, he'll scare off the moderates. And he can't really turn this against Bush because Bush has had a great record of appointing minorities to high-profile positions in his administration.

It was stupid to fire her. He should have walked by her car and pressed an automatic center punch against her back window and blew it out. After a few rear windows, she would have gotten the hint. /sarcasm off

By the looks of it, he approached her about her bumper sticker, upon which she was forced to respond. Hardly an employee rubbing her politics in her boss' face - more the other way around.

Whatever the case, a boss that treats his employees like this deserves to lose them all. It's poor management to browbeat your employees into submission.

This woman sounds like one of those winers that you encounter at every workplace. You know, the type that blames all of their problems on someone else and wants the government to bail them out of trouble. You know, one of those democrats ...

How much do you want to bet that she has a job for 7 weeks---just until sKerry loses the election then she quietly gets dumped.

And she will not be popular in Alabama--good luck finding a job Nov 3. Out of work just in time for Christmas, that is what I see in this woman's future.

You know, the type that blames all of their problems on someone else and wants the government to bail them out of trouble. Yeah, God forbid that an employee say anything against their employer, especially one as magnaminous as this guy. Not knowing any more about this woman than what's report, she got shafted, and her ex-boss is a complete toad. Again, if the ideologies were reversed, you'd be singing a totally different tune right now.

I guess you do not get it. Talk crap to your boss and you will probably get fired (unless you are a union goon). This woman did not politely disagree with her boss. From the article, she made a "Custer's last stand" out of the issue. Insubordination should be rewarded with a pink slip.

She could've been more diplomatic in her disagreement, but she was disagreeing to an original request was out of bounds to begin with.

If the bumper sticker had anything to do with job performance, I could see a rational argument being made - but she was simply making a statement that her boss disagreed with, and on pointing that out, she found out that it's a losing argument to argue with your boss on such matters.

Her getting fired might be inevitable in this situation, but it doesn't make it right.

Welcome to Free Republic. I hope you enjoy your stay here - and I hope you enjoy the party on November 2.

Do you know what my job is? My job is to make my boss look good and to keep him out of trouble. Unless you are self-employed, that's what your job is, too. You may not acknowledge that - and in that case, you're probably doing a crappy job at your job.

How do you think this woman was doing at her job? How do you think her reference from this part of her career/resume will look to her future employers?

How do you think her reference from this part of her career/resume will look to her future employers? Some people actually like employees who have a mind of their own and speak it in the appropriate manner. It's not like she went public with her boss' memos in an attempt to humiliate him and his company - she had a freaking bumper sticker in the window of her car.

At what point does employer imperative to dictate the personal preferences of their employees end?

Again, if any of you showed up at work with a W stands for Whatever sticker in your personal automobile and got fired for it, you'd be screaming louder than she did.

This isn't a Democratic vs. Republican issue - it's more of a libertarian one, balancing the power and responsibilities of the employer vs. employee right and freedoms. In this case, by crossing over into the employee's private realm of free speech and assembly, the employer fucked up. Big time.
