Tancredo furious with Hutchinson comment on immigration

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) considered calling for a top Bush administration official to resign after reading his recent comments on enforcing immigration laws, according to sources.

Upset with Undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security Asa Hutchinson's remark that it would not be realistic to enforce current immigration laws, Tancredo, a staunch supporter of more immigration laws, contemplated calling for the administration officials resignation.

The two Republicans planned last night to discuss their differences, and it is not expected that Tancredo will ask for Hutchinson to step down.

Hutchinson last week told The Washington Times that it would be unrealistic to say that officials would be able to reduce the number of the millions of illegal immigrants in the country.

Tancredo, chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, is often at odds with the Bush administration over its immigration policies. Last month he criticized the GOP's platform om immigration, calling it weak.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), which will hold a press conference on immigration solutions to combat terrorism with Tancredo today, also strongly criticized Hutchinson's comments.

FAIR called Hutchinson the "Bush administration's point man to sell a massive illegal alien amnesty and guest worker program," and the groups Executive Director Dan Stein said: "The only thing 'unrealistic' are the choices of the administration is presenting to the American public."

A spokesman for Tancredo said the lawmaker was "fairly angered" with Hutchinson's comments. The staffer added that Tancredo and Hutchinson were scheduled to discuss the remarks last evening, with the expectation that the matter would be resolved and Tancredo would not call for Hutchinson's resignation at today's press conference.

A spokesman for Hutchinson could not be reached for comment by press time. Prior to joining the Bush administration, Hutchinson served as a member of Congress from Arkansas from 1997 to 2001.

I'm sorry, if we all wanted the same thing, there would be lots more prosecutions of the large corporations that hire illegals.

Some of us want secure borders. Others want to drive down wages with an influx of illegal immigrants.

You also have a lot of pressure from rights groups, immigration lawyers, humanitarian groups that work constantly to make it difficult to deport illegal immigrants and make the border patrol's job harder to do.

We all want the same thing. No illegal entry in the USA. We have to deal with reality in order to make this work better in the future.

Reality Check:
Our Commander in Chief, Congress, Governors, and Mayors have ignored illegal immigration for votes and business.

When we have a terrorist attack from someone coming across the border, the blood will be on their hands. It will take an attack before they will get serious about this issue. It's sad but reality. Republicans have failed us on this issue. We must act to get the Republicans back on track.

I hate to say it, but Hutchison is right. The laws in their current state, are ipossible to enforce. Both the laws and the policy need to change.

Baloney all we need is for the President of the US to take a stand and tell the world that we will vigorously enforce our borders and our immigration laws and tell those that are illegal in this country to pack their bags and leave..then a little follow through to the employers....with a few high profile cases...plenty of laws on the books, just no mandate from the top...

"You are correct and hopefull everyone will calm down and think about this. The current laws require LITERALLY the Border patrol agents go out and pick up every single individual illegal. Yes, that would be very nice but humanly impossible. We need to focus on real issues. like: Building a real fence that is not stuck in libo by envirowacko laws. (seriously a border fence should be exempt from environmental impact laws, screw the snails) Supporting our border patrol agents who are FREQUENTLY SHOT AT BY MEXICAN POLICE AND MILITARY. Finding effective means of dealing with those who come legally and overstay illegally. (vast majority illegals enter the USA LEGALLY.) We all want the same thing. No illegal entry in the USA. We have to deal with reality in order to make this work better in the future."

I agree with everything you said. But we also need to make it easier to immigrate to the US. A big part of the reason we have 3 million people illegally crossing the border every year, is because there is something like a 10 year wait for citizenship.

I'd much rather make it easier for foreigners to become US citizens, than have them illegall crossing the borders. If they become citizens, they are documented, and we can keep track of what is actually happening.

It's kind of like the gun control argument. If you make it too difficult to get a firearm license, only outlaws will have firearms. If you make it too difficult for people to immigrate, all you get is a bunch of illegal immigrants.

Maybe you could also enforce your border without allowing a flood of folks in to depress wages and increase the stress on our infrastructure.

Actually you see the direction of improvement.

Up until homeland sec. dpt. Border patrol and the immigration courts were under different departments.

One of the LARGEST problems with "rights groups" is that you do not have to be a laywer to represent people in immigration matters. You can be "recognized" by BCIS (aka INS) and thus do all sorts of michief. Eliminate the non-lawyer rights groups and zap the busybodies are out of business.

I think this needs a two pronged attack. (bear with me this is a bit simplistic) 1. keep further illegal aliens out and 2. deal with those that are here.

1. Keep them out. This means build a border. In some places the rights groups have used environmental impact to prevent fence building. I say exempt border fences from environamental impact law. built a high tech fence.

Allow for instant deportation. DNA sample all those caught. Create permanent blacklists of repeat offenders and exlcude them EVEN IF THEY MARRY A US CITIZEN.

Deputize citizen patrols along the border. They want to help. TRAIN THEM.

Deploy UAV's and USE them.

Provide Border patrol with video cameras so they can provide proof of being shot at.

(I also think the USA needs to pressure mexico to allow US citizens to own land in mexico. SOMEHOW that might help)

2. Dealing with those here: Put overstay final deportation orders on the NCIC. REQUIRE local police to keep illegals in custody. AKA Immigration hold. Since these have already had hearings deport them stat.

Record departures of all visitors, those with no recorded departure also go on the NCIC as overstay warrents. Put them in the deportation system when they get caught for anything from tickets to crimes to applying for a DL.

REQUIRE ALL DMV do a legal status check, if illegal again into the deportation system.

Basically manadate any government interaction require a imigration status check FOR all aplicants. Gradually you will have deportations and legalizations of those here.

#2 is dependent on information sharing. This is what the ACLU opposes.

I wish someone would explain to me how we have the resources to fight an unconstitutional War on Drugs, are able to enforce every single unconstitutional gun law, can send aid to every foreign pest-hole on the planet, and cannot enforce our immigration laws.

I would rather we eliminate the socialist agenda and focus on securing our porous borders.

what you said : )

I know if it was within my power to simply "call on Hutchison to step down" I certainly would. Tancredo has that ability, he should do it.

G. Bush will not have to pander to the middle after we re-elect him. Hopefully he will start dragging this country away from the abyss.

Are you implying that the war on drugs, and gun control laws are effective? If you ask me they are about as effective as our immigration laws. Our biggest argument against Gun control laws is first and foremost that they violate the 2nd ammendment. That argument is closely followed by the fact that they are ineffective.

Saying repeal the ineffective gun laws is a good argument. Let's be consistent and say repeal the ineffective immigration laws, or at least replace them with something that's effective.

I remember how close the 2000 election was. Bush does too. He cannot alienate a large segment of our society-the middle- by doing what is right before this election.

Anyway, he is the only candidate we have.

You're asking someone to explain the inexplicable... and defend the indefensible... Won't ever happen. The same ones who cheer on the WOsD and the BATFags will defend to the death (YOURS, for a preference) the way the borders are "sealed" and the use of illegals as cheap labor. Same old crowd!

Yes I am. They achieve the purpose of funding a standing army among us (law enforcment) and weakening the ability of the citizens to resisit tyranny.

I think we will never be rid of those of that ilk. During the Revolution of 1776 there were many who supported the King. Freedom won then, and can win again.
