Posted on 09/15/2004 2:11:12 PM PDT by Uncle Jaque
President of ME Gun Owners Assoc. Jeff WEINSTEIN will be discussing the "Assault Weapon Ban" with Portland Police Chief "mike" CHITWOOD tonight on Ch. 6 "207" Show at 1900 hrs. tonight.
Portland Democrat Ethan STRIMLING is promising to introduce a bill to ban "Assault Weapons" in ME as California has done some time ago. Unlike the Federal AWB, these State bans never "sunset".
In an earlier interview, STRIMLING could not tell the difference between an AR-15 and an M-16; but facts have never stopped liberals from banning what they don't like before, so we don't expect any ignorance-based inhibitions on the lpart of our liberal legislators this time either.
Chief CHITWOOD is a notorious anti-2nd Ammendment activist, and an outspoken ally of the "Million Moms" and other victim-disarmament groups.
Jeff W. is host of a popular Saturday Morning Talk show in the Portland area.
I still haven't figured out how California got away with being part of the Union and bypassing the Constitution.
Oh, I think some Dimocrat should introduce another AWB in Congress!
Let's see if we can totally sink the Dimocratic Party!
Chitwood is just following republican hero, Mitt Romney's unconstitutional lead.
I see one problem. California had no RKBA rights specified in the State Constitutiion.
Maine has: Article 1 Section 16 "Section 16. To keep and bear arms. Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned."
There is no "well regulated miltia" or "Neccessary to the Security of the State" equivocation, just the naked Right.
Gotta watch out for those 'naked rights'. Maybe theyll outlaw it as porn. ;) Seriously though...whats up w/ ME? They seem to be in some sort of unspoken race w/ MA for being the right coast's commie 'poster child'.
As long as the Dems control the Legislature as well as the Blaine House (Gov. Baldacci) we will probably continue down that "progressive" path ("toilet" might be an apt metaphor as well).
We may have two "Republican" Senators in SNOWE and COLLINS... but you probably couldn't tell they were "R" by their voting records. Both of them supported the AWB and it's indefinite extension.
Maine has one of if not the highest per capita total taxes in the Nation, yet one of the lowest average per capita income levels.
Some 22% of our HS Graduates flee immediately, as there is little opportunity or future for them here. How many flip burgers or sweep floors in the grocery store for a few years before they give up and bail out too, I don't know.
But a lot of aging Maine Couples have to travel out of state to visit their children and grandchildren.
ME government is overtly hostile to business, and the private sector is increasingly marked by bankrupcy, outsourcing, and abandoned mills. Exessively burdensome taxes and regulations are usually credited for their demise or banishment from the State of Maine.
The American economy might be on the mend elsewhere, but you'd probably never notice it living here in Maine.
While skilled workers flee the State, Democrats and "Catholic Charities" bring in some 1200 Muslim Somali Immigrants to an already struggling Lewiston area - at last report many of them immediately went on welfare and many are still dependant on the taxpayer's largesse a couple of years later. (SheLion may be able to adress this issue better than I)
As the private sector shrivels, the government expands.
Property taxes have doubled in the last 10 years, and citizen initiatives to cap tax growth to 1% per year are being resisted (at taxpayers expense) by the State and local governments, who are threatening to lay off police, shut down Fire Stations, close schools and stop plowing snow in the Winter if it passes.
Apparently "living within one's means" is NOT an option for Maine government!
Far too many Working class Mainers, or those on a limited fixed income, cannot afford the ever-expanding taxes on property that may have been in the family for generations, and are forced out of their homes and into exile in order to make way for wealthier people "from away" who can better afford to support our insatiable Beauraucrats and their pork - stuffed programs while still living large.
I call this phenomenon "Socio-Economic Cleansing".
Sort of like what the British Aristocracy did to the resident Scots and Irish back in the 1840s and 50's.
About the only area in which Maine retains a vestage of common sense is in our rights to private firearms ownership.
Unlike California (and about 10 other States) peaceable Mainers can still hunt, shoot, acquire, keep and bear (CWC permits are reasonably obtainable in most places) arms with relative ease and freedom.
But make no doubt about it; most Democrat/socialists do not feel at all comfortable with ANY breathing room for Liberty, (unless it involves abortion, aparently) and are constantly looking for ways to take the RTKBA away from Maine "Sheeple" as well.
Maintining such rights as we have left will be a constant struggle, and one I'm not all that confident we will continue to win without a dramatic change in political orientation in our State.
A lot of Mainers see a real possibility that our beloved State may indeed become "Kalifornia East"; we seem to be well on the way already.
Hey we have to pay for all those laptops for kids to send love notes with.
I live in Socialist Portland. My State Senator is that sad gadfly Ethan Strimling. I called into Jeff Weinsteins radio show when Strimling was on pushing his wacky plan.
He was clueless. He did not know anything about the guns he wanted banned, made up out of whole cloth, his statistics on "assault weapons" use in crime, and generally was slaughtered on the air by a host of callers as he pushed support for the Million Mom pink bus tour that was infecting the state that week.
A few of us (about 30) showed up with signs to counter protest at the Million Moms event. We outnumbered the Moms about 3 to one. Strimling, having carried thier water all week, was conspicuous by his absence.
Maine is a quasi socialist state with the highest tax burden in the country. (no other state takes as much from people so poor). There is a tax revolt brewing but even under the terms of the proposed cap, I will still pay almost twice the taxes as a citizen of Colorado.
Guns are the only aspect of freedom that still exist outside of the control of the socialists. Strimling has no chance of getting his bill passed even if the democrats retain control of the legislature in November.
It is simply a publicity stunt for our gadfly.
