It seems to me that if you announce this in advance, you are basically inviting Osama to attack us again.

How long do you think it'll take Kerry to break that promise?

If Kerry wins in November he'll be tested by AQ as well as by North Korea. If he shows the slightest weakness (and he would) we'll have more volunteer soldiers dying in more places around the globe. The only way he could replace them is with a draft.

For the Dems to take the draft off the table, when no one knows what the future may hold, is idiocy, and points to their lack of judgement. We definitely don't need a Liberal/Socialist as our CIC.

I truly believe that conscription is ultimately good for a country.

Yeah, it may be good for the country. But we've learned that it's bad for the military. Our volunteers today are exponentially more lethal than draft-based armies of the past. It's like comparing a Sherman tank to an M-1, or comparing a P-51 to an F-15 Eagle.

When we are under attack by every muslim nation because of your partner weak knees and you have no choice but to institute a draft or raise the white flag

Nonsense.

It only takes two guys per silo to turn the keys.

"The result is over $200 billion and counting"

Not everyone agrees on that number:

On who is pushing (in any way whatsoever) for a draft:

Yeah, the $200 billion figure is bogus -- the Wall Street Journal covered that a few days ago.

On the other hand, it's hard to give a rats backside about anything Edwards says, 'cause he's so ineffectual.

It's smart when you believe that most of the people in the country are political hicks who'll swallow any populist dreck that you can shovel down their throats.

Hell, most of the Democratic base NEEDS to believe what Mssrs. Kerry and Edwards are saying. It's the only way they can force themselves to the ballot box this November.

Well....I don't know about that. I'm a retired Navy officer ('78 to '99) and I've seen just about every iteration of prez you could have (Carter, Reagan, Bush 41 and Bill Clinton). We usually just swallowed hard, saluted and did what we had to.

That didn't mean that we didn't stand on principle. I remember when Clinton tried to allow openly gay members in the military. A number of current and former military members of all paygrades (right up to Al Gray, former Commandant of the Marine Corps)really worked Congress and other avenues to ensure such idiocy didn't occur.

Push comes to shove, the military salutes the person who represents the OFFICE, if not the person himself.

Rangel tried to have it reinstituted on the grounds that he wanted to force all the so-called "war mongers in power" witness their own sons and daughters being drafted into the military.

He comes from an extremely liberal congressional district in NYC. He panders to his base quite effectively.

Your comments are excellent. During the Clinton years, I didn't choose to serve in the military -- partly because I didn't want to serve under that guy. Looking back, that was a mistake on my part, and I'm glad for so many others who did serve at that time. They kept the military strong -- and thanks to them we had the forces we needed to respond to 9/11.

In the future I'll probably have strong opinions about who our president should be, but I hope to put in good service regardless of who wins the election.

It seems to me that it's democrats that are calling for it to be reinstated. The likes of Charlie Rangel come to mind......

Don't try to make sense out of anything the Dems say. It will make your head explode.

When it comes down to the basics, the only people who will go pick up a gun and fight for this country are those who believe in it.

The draft hasn't been needed because there are alot of people who believe in their country. You don't see ANY loony-tune lefty's joining up, EXCEPT for those who think the military is a path to free education. Fortunately, these people are easy to spot, and don't make it past training. Some do make it through. It is those people's parents, that you see participating in this anti war movement, not wanting their beloved put in harms way.

These people are scum, who only want to use the millitary as a welfare handout to provide education for their kids. It's because they were useless parents who were too lazy to work and pay for the children they have brought into this world.

Both my son's are currently serving, and I just recently retired. neither needed to join the army for extended education. They joined out of duty, for the love of country and freedom. Plus, it's a fantasic experience, a way to see the world. when you come out of the army, you are a man of the world.
the army does NOT recruit idiots either. Most that sign up are bright, inteligent people. The army trains them to be the nations best.

How John kerry ever got into the navy i will never know, perhaps out of kennedy connections. His record tells me that he should have been sent home to mama.

I KNOW that contracts will NOT be signed under kerry leadership.

And Edwards? WTF does he know? he's just a PATSY who has never done a single thing for this country, except RAPE it's wealth to line his pockets, driving up costs.

My one bit of rebellion towards the Clinton stewardship of my military service (Navy) was when I was about to retire. I was asked where I'd like to receive my "discharge certificate" (officers don't get the "honorable discharge" certificate until they reach a certain age, as they still hold a commission but are retained on the Retired List, subject to recall). Knowing that'd be signed by then-President Clinton, I expressed that I didn't want one.

I kind of regret that now. It would've been nice to put up on my "hero wall" ;-)
