Johnny Ramone, member of punk legends ’The Ramones,’ dies at 55

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the seminal punk band “The Ramones,” has died. He was 55.

Ramone died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, his publicist said. He had battled prostate cancer for five years, and was hospitalized in June at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Ramone, born John Cummings, was one of the original members of the Ramones, whose hit songs “I Wanna be sedated” and “Blitzkrieg Bop,” among others, earned the band induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

The band’s singer, Joey Ramone, whose real name was Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Bassist Dee Dee Ramone, who was born Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose in 2002.

Johnny Ramone founded “The Ramones” in 1974 with Joey Ramone, DeeDee Ramone and Tommy Ramone, the only surviving member of the original band.

Yes, he was a republican. You've probably seen his picture on this site wearing a t-shirt that says "kill a commie for mommy."

PT Boat on the way to Havana, you can make a livin' man pickin' the banana ~ Ramones

I don't know what their political sentiments were for certain, but I do mourn, this is the same band that sung "now I wanna sniff some glue" ... always had that eagle symbol too.

If I am not mistaken, throughout the course of their career, at one point, one bandmember left and another took his place, if I am correct, I am not sure. Thought they got a baldheaded drummer.

I pray for all.

Joey was a liberal Democrat who fought with Johnny over the song "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg," which Joey wrote as a diatribe against Reagan. From what I recall, Joey agreed to include more of Johnny's songs on the album to keep the peace.

As far as drummers are concerned, Tommy was replaced by Marky (my favorite) who was replaced by Ritchie.

I liked his guitar playing. Not too complicated, with a lot of the raw energy that rock and roll is all about. He kept the spirit of Buddy Holly with those short fun songs.

Saw them a number of times in their heyday. Got their autographs on a blank inner sleeve of the Rock and Roll High School album at a record store signing. Still have it. I got one of them to add "We've seen Freaks too" I would rank their shows at the very top of my concert going experiences. RIP Johnny. Thanks for the memories!!!

NYC old-school GOP-punk-rock sadness here. A shame Johnny can't get to see Bush re-elected... he bravely fought the good fight for our side! RIP!!!! A true legend.

Think I'll blast "Loudmouth" on the headphones...

Considering that the Ramones brought REAL three chord rock and roll back at a time when music was dominated by drugged out pretentious British Homos like Led Zeppelin, ELP and Yes with their 20 minute solos and artistic pretensions, I would say they deserve credit for keeping the genre going.

Johnny Ramone was a proud Reagan conservative and was always amazed how the rock culture, as a whole, blindly followed liberalism. He lived in the heart of the leftist echo chamber but was a consistent voice against these morons. I have a copy of an excellent interview he gave last year talking about his politics. I'll post it if I can figure out how to do it.

Last post here for me tonight at least.

For Punk Music, they and the Clash is who I liked, we all have opinions. The Clash's success is almost commercialized now, but of course, they lost one of their band leaders in the last few years as well.

Just my opinion.
