Rather Spoke at Democratic Fundraiser
Washington Post ^ | April 4, 2001 | Kurtz

Dan Rather, the longest-serving and most outspoken of the major network news anchors, recently served as the star attraction at a Democratic Party fundraiser.

Donors paid as much as $1,000 for a private evening in Austin with the CBS newsman, according to an invitation obtained by The Washington Post. Rather's appearance at the March 21 gathering generated about $20,000 for the Travis County Democratic Party -- and will undoubtedly provide ammunition to critics who have long accused Rather of leaning to the left...Other hosts included Scott Ozmun, the county Democratic chairman, and Robin Rather, the anchor's daughter and a Texas environmentalist and marketing executive.

Okay, let's pull this all together with all the appropriate sources.

- Rather spoke at a Fundraiser in Texas for Travis County Democrats. (See above link)

- Rather's daughter is heavily involved with this Democratic group. (See above link)

- The forged memo was apparently faxed to CBS from a Kinkos in Texas. See Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24635-2004Sep15.html

- Bill Burkett, was interviewed by Mary Mapes for the CBS/Rather story. See CBS' site: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/02/13/politics/main600330.shtml. He is a Texas democrat who has had an axe to grind against Bush for a long time. Here are some excerpts from a few of his peices. See http://michael-friedman.com/archives/000139.html

- Years ago, in 1997, Burkett had actually told a left leaning journalist that he saw the Bush memos in the trash. See http://www.calpundit.com/archives/003249.html. This journalist himself now seems skeptical of the CBS story. http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2004_09/004672.php

- Bill Burkett's laywer, who is also speaking out, is running as a judge in Texas. He is a left wing Democrat. On his website he slams Karl Rove, saying, "We Texans have a chance this year to fight back hard against Karl's plan to steal away the people's government from the people. Placing David Van Os on the Texas Supreme Court will be one of Karl's worst nightmares. We the people have the power to make it happen." See his website: http://www.vanosforsupremecourt.com/

- Marian Knox, the aid to Killian who claims that the forged memos represent Killian's true feelings regarding Bush is also a partisan Democrat. She has previously stated that she didn't have any firsthand knowledge of Bush's service in the guard. See: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/nation/2796630

Clearly, Rather has links the Democratic party in Texas. The forged memos have links to these same Texas democrats. In light of full disclosure Dan Rather should come right out and admit his bias and his links to the Democratic party. He should also reveal ALL of the sources - not just the partisan democrats, e.g., Killian's family who say their father didn't feel the way Knox describes.

But Rather won't. Any fairminded person can see the bias.

Hey "Mighty", Rather's and his daughter's connection to Texas Taxocrats has been out for a couple of weeks. Even the part about the fund raiser, it is just the POst smells blood in the water.

Umm, Texas is a rather (heh) big state, you know. Travis county (where Austin is located) is about 4.5 hours away from Bill Burkett and that fateful Kinkos in Abeleine.

The pressure is building, and if this keeps up, Rather is going to have to be removed soon. The CBS/Viacom stock holders are going to have to pressure reform in the news room, or they all or going to lose $$ - big time.

From the article

Asked for comment last night, CBS News spokeswoman Sandy Genelius said: "Obviously our standards don't allow correspondents to participate in political party fundraisers. No one believes in this and upholds it more fervently than Dan Rather. This was an honest oversight on his part."

Conflict of interest?????? Honest oversight, as Rush would say, "Bovine excrement!!"

Ben Barnes, the Democratic lobbyist and former lieutenant governor of Texas who was featured prominently in the 60 Minutes report that triggered the Memogate controversy, was the co-sponsor of a fund-raiser for a liberal district attorney in Texas along with Dan Rather's daughter, Robin, an Austin-based environmental activist. According to the web site of Ronnie Earle, district attorney for Travis County, Texas, Ben Barnes and Robin Rather were among a the small group of sponsors for an October 3, 2000 fund-raising event for Earle's reelection campaign. In 2001, Dan Rather was the keynote speaker at a Travis County Democratic Party event. He spoke there at the behest of his daughter. Given the closeness of the Travis County, it's very likely that Ben Barnes was at the event. So why hasn't Dan come out and said that his family has close ties with Ben Barnes? I believe a little disclosure is in order Mr. Rather...

Robin Rather and/or Ben Barnes most likely conspired this forgery.

According to Mark Larson who sat in for Dennis Prager today, his theory, after speaking with Democratic Party leaders in Travis County, TX is that the documents were created by Bill Burkett and delivered to Robin Rather (Dan's daughter), who is a Democratic Party activist in Travis County, either directly, or through his attorney. Robin then delivered the documents to her father (hence, the "unimpeachable source"). Rather, having absolute confidence in his daughter assumed the documents were real.

Not wanting to embarrass his daughter he won't disclose his source and stuck to his guns on their authenticity.

None of the above has been verified, but was pieced together by Larson. Well, let me say that it has been verified to the same extent that Dan Rather verified the authenticity of the documents.

The MSM will bury, hide, spike this story because ABCNNBCBS are all connected at the hip and gargle truth from the fountain of knowledge and swallow what doesn't fit their left leaning agenda. The left wing media has become the very enemy of democracy by not just providing the news and letting the truth be known and the people decide. They enabled a rapist and lieing man in Clinton to be elected and directly cause 911. Now they are trying to elect a communist traitor with Kerry and bring down a sitting wartime president.

Hell, there own dam story is a SO WHAT episode anyway regardless of what is or is not true, because they helped elect a proclaimed draft doger in Bill Clinton and that made no difference to them.

For some reason, when you're putting up a thread, the box they offer for additonal posts will not "take" the copy and paste links.

If you ONLY copy and paste and don't use ANY HTML at all, the links become live.

No < > of any kind.......just plain copy and paste.

OMG this isnt a smoking gun this is a flaming banned weapon. This almost runs afoul of the 527 charters (given that Rather is just a 527 for the DNC after all.)

This in particular struck me: Rather said yesterday that he hadn't realized beforehand that the event was a fundraiser. 'I didn't ask the question, and I should have,' he said in an interview. "I take full responsibility for it. I'm responsible and I'm accountable."

DAN RATHER INTREPID INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER DID NOT "ASK"? DIDNT "REALIZE" HE WAS AT A FUNDRAISER? WHAT IS HE STUPID? DOES HE THINK WE'RE STUPID? OR IS HE JUST THE MOST SLOPPY, INCOMPETENT, DUPLICITOUS "REPORTER" ALIVE?

There is only one answer: Utterly incompetent or an unmitigated liar. What is your choice? I'm going with duplicitous liar and unadulterated DNC stooge.
