I am doing some research on the NEW MEDIA. There used to be a thread on here that had some history about how Free Republic started. But I can't for the life of me find it in the archives.
If any of you have links or knowledge on the subject I would surely appreciate if you would post them in this thread.
I have several friends and customers (I FReep in my place of business) who want more info on this site. Further, I also have been asked to give a talk to a local community group about the New Media so I need to get on the ball, and get it all ready in time for the talk.
Thank you all in advance!

Ping for any help you can give.
Make sure you include a diorama for extra credit.
Once upon a time there was a magical place called FreeRepublic. Bad presidents got impeached, good presidents got elected, and everybody posted fun posts all day long while dressed in pajamas. And we all lived happily ever after, except for the part where we explained to our husbands about why we were up after midnight in our nighties posting on FreeRepublic...
THE NOT END
Two words and two initials: Bill "BJ" Clinton.
I know that this may not be exactly what your asking for but it is a great thing to use:
It is the wayback machine. You can see what this site looked like along time ago Dec 21, 1996. Wow!
It works for most sites. Check out how ebay and google used to look, interesting
Hey maybe able to get some of Kerry's old pages that had some of his lies on them before he changed the pages
His antics and disrespect for the institution of the Presidency created a furious, mobilizing backlash that the left and the pundits still cannot grasp.
Free Republic started long time ago
with a guy named Sloppy Joe.....
That is cool. Thanks for the note.
Diorama of the Sister-Biting Moose
Diorama of "We're Not Sure What This Is Yet, But It Involves Artichokes and Corpses"
bump for interest
Thank you all! I knew I could count on the FReepers!
And Martin you always seem to have some fun ready to post.
Is THIS what you were looking for?
I have it bookmarked on my "Links" page.
Artichokes and corpses? I think my laptop is going to need it's keyboard cleaned out now....
In addition, being a member of FR convinced quite a few Freepers to start their own blogs. My little news site is pretty popular. People surf in from about 63 countries world wide every month. (In fact, when we invaded Iraq, I was able to track visitors from Baghdad who logged onto my site from a Russian ISP) My disabilities required me to curtail my efforts at personal commentary. But I still spend about two hours each day posting news reports. Check my tag line.
Great post (JR's History of FR)
In the early days we had a lib named ASH. Dickie Morris was a freeper then also. Drudge was unknown, but linked, and then 3 years into it all we had a "March for Justice"!
(Been here since early '98, but braindead since '99)
F.R. Eerepublic was born the son of poor black sharecroppers...
Free Republic started when some guys wrote that the rights of the people to peacably assemble shall not be infringed upon.
Yes, and the new phone books are out, and Free Republic is in it!
Strap yourself into the Wayback machine. Go here http://www.archive.org/ and type in "www.freerepublic.com" and click the magic button.
Well first the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, and died away.
And then the Arabs came...
... long, long ago in a land far away ...
The first sighting of the Free Republic was by Ponce De Leon in 1519. However the actual first post on the Free Republic was made a few years later by DeSoto.
Somwhere there must be an entire chapter written on the cheese-eating moose era.
And that led to the need for a local dentist, who specializes in treating FReepers, andin treating DUnces.
It all started in a place called ciber space. Jim woke.......
"In A.D. 2101 was was beginning..."
Wow. That would slow down the pace...posting by way of punchcards. Checking back 5 hours later to find an error with card #1372, resubmitting the cards and finding an error on card #2331 three hours later...repeat 5 more times, post entered one day later and everyone forgetting what the subject of the thread was. Then go out and have another beer.
Check out my profile for two links.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
And God looked down upon the earth and said, "AlGore. Go forth and create the Internet."
And in a land far to the West there was a man named Jim Robinson, who looked upon the face of the deeply distrusted Main Stream Media and said, "Lo and Behold. Thou good and faithful people. We needest a new news outlet that can be used for good, and not for evil."
And so it came to pass, good servant Robinson brought forth a new website, one that grew in power and stature as the good Lord deemed appropriate.
Why don't you just interview the founder, Jim Robinson,
A good man who started this with a belief and few dollars.
FR began in 1936 with all members corresponding by postcards. Midway in the new century, posts were made by ham radio, starting in 1951.
more to come
For a brief time in the late 50's, Freepers communicated by Interoceter, but gave it up as parts became scarce.
And then Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it! He took her best summer dress out of the closet and put it on!
