HELP!!! I need some info on the History of Free Republic!
Today | Mad Dawgg

Posted on 09/17/2004 12:37:17 AM PDT by Mad Dawgg

I am doing some research on the NEW MEDIA. There used to be a thread on here that had some history about how Free Republic started. But I can't for the life of me find it in the archives.

If any of you have links or knowledge on the subject I would surely appreciate if you would post them in this thread.

I have several friends and customers (I FReep in my place of business) who want more info on this site. Further, I also have been asked to give a talk to a local community group about the New Media so I need to get on the ball, and get it all ready in time for the talk.

Thank you all in advance!

Mad Dawgg A.K.A. Pajama Clad FReeper.

Soon after I invented the internet, those vast right wing conspiracy nuts came up with freerepublic.com. The horror!.

Why don't you just interview the founder, Jim Robinson,
A good man who started this with a belief and few dollars.

FR began in 1936 with all members corresponding by postcards. Midway in the new century, posts were made by ham radio, starting in 1951.

more to come

For a brief time in the late 50's, Freepers communicated by Interoceter, but gave it up as parts became scarce.

Well, first the earth cooled.
Then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they died and turned into oil.
Then the Arabs came and bought Mercedes-Benzes . . .

And then Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it! He took her best summer dress out of the closet and put it on!

Well... It all began with the domestication of milk producing livestock in the late neolithic period. Hunter-gatherers began to form more permanant villages and domesticated wild sheep and goats. They soon discovered that the milk could be processed into a curd that lasted longer, and was easier to transport, than liquid milk. Of course, molds would infect the curd and ruin much of it; however, beneficial molds which improved the flavor of the curd were discovered by accident. These protypical cheeses, as one might expect, drew the unwanted attention of many a passing rouge møøse. This threat to their sisters accelerated neolithic man's tendency to gather into protective villages...

True but Brak sings about cheese from time to time.

Giving this a good bump....

I've been around for years and cough up $25/mo. to keep help keep FR going.

Sure beats that daily subscription to the local rag you may be reading? Care to re-direct your funds?

"Care to re-direct your funds?"

I am a Monthly donor but only $5.00. However, my wife and I have only a combined paycheck of 24K a year. I am working on a couple of internet projects now that should raise our income dramatically in the next year or so. I just hope it doesn't all end up with the Government.
