Rendell: Kerry Too Reliant on Consultants
Yahoo! News/AP ^ | Sept. 17, 2004 | RON FOURNIER

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said Friday that fellow Democrat John Kerry has listened too much to his Washington consultants and not enough to local party leaders like himself, comparing the situation to the failed 1988 Michael Dukakis campaign.

"I think that's a systematic problem in the way presidential politics has evolved. I've sensed that problem since Dukakis," the governor told The Associated Press.

Rendell, a former Democratic Party chairman and one of the party's most influential governors, said the presidential candidate's approach has improved in recent days. Still, his assessment of the Kerry campaign echoes the frustration and concern expressed by party leaders across the country, even as the Massachusetts senator remains locked in a tight race with President Bush.

"Our love for Governor Rendell is unconditional," said Kerry spokesman Joe Lockhart. "We love hearing from him and getting his advice, even when it's delivered as a swift kick. We're pleased that he thinks we're moving in the right direction."

Rush had a fascinating story on blacks and the 527s, and how they are being cut out. Here is yet another example of unintended consequences, where McCain-Feingold made democracy less local and put it more in the hands of the elites. Rendell is complaining that Kerry doesn't have to listen to people like him.

Too funny - a consultant is a consultant, the same as a prostitute is a prostitute. It all depends on the price.

It's called centralized control. Stalin was a big fan of it. Who cares what the peasants and local party hacks think. After all, Kerry knows better than anyone else. Don't believe me? Just ask Kerry.

As soon as they get too loud, they will be given a few crumbs and that will shut them up for another 4 years.

That is probably the most damaging photograph I've seen a politician pose for in my lifetime. And Kerry's has posed for a bunch of doozies.

Rendell would do himself a favor by distancing himself from Kerry. He gets alot of cross party support. This too can change...hear that Ed?

I am one of the many who do not support this ultra lib. The only thing I can say about Ed is he gave us what he said he would- gambling. Of course the loosers that voted it in have a planned way of making a personal profit off of them.

I guess he doesn't want a job from the Kerry administration and/or doesn't think Kerry will win anymore.

You know the ship is sinking when Dems start firing on it.

I never thought I'd say this, but Go Ed Rendell go!

Rush said a year or so ago that if Bush wins re-election this year, the only candidate who could pose a serious challenge to Hillary in 2008 would be Ed Rendell, and he would be a more formidable opponent than Hillary to the Republican nominee.

The Dem primary process bears some blame, too. The inner circle in Iowa anointed Dean, he imploded. Left with little other "vetted" choice, , Dems flocked to Kerry like an old maid at midnight on Sadie Hawkins Day. Without much further ado, he swept the other primaries.

Maybe Fast Eddy can hire those same consultants for his next re-election campaign for Governor of PA.

Hopefully, the issues of Time and Newsweek, et. al, after GW wins, will have a section on Kerry with his most suicidal moments. Lots and lots of photos. The blue bunny suit will probably take pride of place.

I have read two articles in the last two days which both mentioned that Joe Lockhart is now deciding what Kerry will say every day. These weren't Kerry "hit pieces", but just articles which in a matter of fact way mentioned in passing that Lockhart is in charge of the daily message. One of these I think was a NYT article.

If Kerry is elected who will be running the government?
