Well, I'm an idiot. To whit:

To be fair, many of these ideas are bogus, but they are also rapidly exposed as such, sometimes in mere seconds. For example, an exuberant commenter will note that one of CBS's memos carries a Saturday date; another, dripping with condescension, will remind the first that Guard members are called "weekend warriors" for a reason--they drill (and keep office hours) on Saturdays.

I think I'm the "exuberant commentator" who noted the Saturday date. In fact, I looked up the calendar for that year...I'm so ashamed....

What an ignorant deliberately misleading beginning to an otherwise good story.

Evidently we have a lot of people's noses out of joint.

When I first found free republic during the 2000 elections, I nearly cried. I couldn't believe there were other people actually talking about the things I'd been secretly thinking for years. Who would have thought being part of a vast right wing conspiracy would be so entertaining, or so liberating.

Great summary.

The previous morning, Power Line--which had quickly established itself as the blog world's clearinghouse for updates on the story

Well Power Line did a great job ..... but IMHO, Free Republic was and remains the clearinghouse for updates on the Rathergate story.

This really is a great recap of what happened. Although this story seems like forever, it's only been 10 days. Amazing how fast things can turn. September 8th, 2004 will go down in history as the "Day the MSM Died". Within a few years, all history, science, knowledge, and everything said within the last 40 years will be in digital form on the internet. This is what the founding fathers had enough foresight to see we needed, even if they couldn't have imagined the technology. Freedom of expression in it's purest form. All I can say is "thank you Al Gore for inventing the internet"!

Don't remind us that the live election night thread lasted 36 days......

Yeah, the good ol' days of alt.bizarre, the Backbone Cabal, and the like. I knew there was a reason I feel so at home in FReeperland. {g}

I wnder if the Old Media will ever realise that people like the members of Free Republic are the mainstream of America,not the colorful-but-loony protester/hippy/lefty radical types they've delighted in showcasing for so long.

Sounds like FreeRepublic is being described as one might describe the New York Stock Exchange on a busy trading day--only we exchange information.

IF YOU TRAWL the posting boards at FreeRepublic.com long enough, you'll go mad.

Been doing it for years and it hasn't happened yet. But getting past posts @ DU without someone using a few lewd four-letter-words may seem strange...

Is there a sign-up sheet for that?

The partisan liberal sites were joined by a short piece from PC Magazine, which supposed that an IBM Selectric Composer could have produced the memos.

I doubt it.
