Parallels Drawn Between CBS Memos, Texan's Postings
Washington Post ^ | 09/17/2004 | Michael Dobbs

Posted on 09/17/2004 7:24:39 PM PDT by jhouston

The former Texas National Guard officer suspected of providing CBS News with possibly forged records on President Bush's military service called on Democratic activists to wage "war" against Republican "dirty tricks" in a series of Internet postings in which he also used phrases similar to several employed in the disputed documents. Retired Lt. Col. Bill Burkett, who earlier said he overheard Bush aides conspiring with the commander of the Texas National Guard to "sanitize" the president's military records, has refused to comment on reports that he could be CBS's confidential source. In e-mails yesterday to The Washington Post, he said he would speak out "at the appropriate time" but "that time is not now."

Burkett has been spilling his guts to anybody who would listen(google him). Its become a crusade for him to bring down Bush. He of course would be implicated if those documents that were shredded were to suddenly turn up. I think he is the poor schnook that has been offered up by the Rats. His psychological health is so deteriorated that he would not be a viable witness against others involved. I do not think he did the forgeries, but, he knows.

Who ever turned the documents over to CBS is a criminal, and broke about ten Texas laws. I don't think protecting "confidential sources" covers harboring criminals. CBS needs to turn him/her over to the proper authorities.

Not just any Texan named Burkett knows Cleland's cell phone number.

Very interesting, looks like some investigation being done by MSM. Kudos to Mr. Dobbs.

If it traces back to Burkett and or DNC Rather would be even more discredited than he is now. He has to keep the source confidential or face total ridicule. IMO Like Clinton the best thing to do is tell the truth and plead for mercy.

Question remains, did he supply the information to the Dems or did he supply the actual docs? Kinkos points to him supplying the docs. Rather's unvetted description of the source points to Burkett. Funny if Burkett supplied the docs why he waited until now to do so.why not in 2000? I can't wait to hear that whopper of an explanation.

I find it hard to believe the staff at CBS didn' google the source..they are acting like a prosecutor not wanting to find anything that didn't support their case so they didn't ask questions.

I watched the video of Rather being interviewed where he repeatedly said the story was true. He also said something about waiting years to get the info and then it came. Unbelievable, not to question the timing. He has lost what little sense he had.

The inference is that CBS was working on a story for a very long period of time without having their documentation verified until last week? Am I missing something?

Mapes hasn't been "working" the story for four year. We've heard that all day. It's simply cover to explain why the story always pops up during a George W. Bush election campaign. You're not missing anything.

Could be a coincedence. Mary Beth Cahill, Kerry, and McAullife
have been using Burkett talking points since February.

The swiftees forced their hand on this.

I see impeachment for Senator Kerry in the future.

Did the WaPo get Burkett's cell phone records, and link him to Cleland?

It sounds like Cleland just confirmed when he was asked. Whether he realized the implication is not clear.

Better if Dobbs had gone to Burkett then and asked if he followed Max's advice and contacted the Kerry Kamp. Wait--Burkett isn't talking. Well, Dobbs could ask the Kerry people directly like he did Cleland.

Tune in tomorrow indeed, because that is the next logical place to make inquiries (and I think we all know the answer).

Another thought---when was Cleland in Texas trying to deliver that letter to President Bush? Was that the cellphone/car ride discussion? I'll go look up when it was...this article says they spoke "mid August".

Bill Burkett sounds like he is hip deep in the Democrat party in Texas. This is from an Aug 31 2004 post

Since 1998, I've commented that we Democratic Leaders were the ones who bear the blame for Democratic defeats. And over the past year, we;ve made great strides to try to correct those problems in Texas.

And then there is this

I'm serious folks, this is a GOOD year to be a Democrat.

And look what he wrote in response to a message entitled Re: [TX-Demos] Kerry Events for the week of 08/15/04 - 08/21/04

I think this can become a spot where we all can get in touch with those doing a good job. FOr example, I end up in doctor's offices weekly in the Dallas Ft. Worth area, but can't seem to find out what's going on to wehre we might join in. [He is referring to Kerry events]

And this

I wished that Tommy could make a presentation to the critical consultants for the John Kerry campaign and develop the message that the voters can not miss concerning "shifting the tax burden".

We, as Democrats must be able to step forward and show that our number one and only goal is to provide HONEST Government and that we are willing to police ourselves in order to make it so.

Also, this sounds a little cryptic

Many of us have risked everything on this election.

"In an Aug. 21 posting, Burkett referred to a conversation with former senator Max Cleland (D-Ga.) about the need to counteract Republican tactics: "I asked if they wanted to counterattack or ride this to ground and outlast it, not spending any money. He said counterattack. So I gave them the information to do it with. But none of them have called me back." Cleland confirmed that he had a two- or three-minute conversation by cell phone with a Texan named Burkett in mid-August while he was on a car ride. He remembers Burkett saying that he had "valuable" information about Bush, and asking what he should with it. "I told him to contact the [Kerry] campaign," Cleland said."

The Washington Post just torched the Kerry Campaign.

"There is a school of thought here that the Kerry people dumped this in our laps, figuring we'd do the heavy lifting on the story. That maybe they had doubts about these documents but hoped we'd get more information," says the producer. Before, during or after this little stunt:

August 26, 2004

excerpt:

CRAWFORD, Texas — Former Georgia Sen. Max Cleland said he tried to get a letter to President Bush asking him to specifically denounce independent campaign ads against John Kerry but no one at the president's ranch would accept the letter.

More on Burkett:

http://www.onlinejournal.com/Commentary/080404Burkett/080404burkett.html

snip-

Lt. Col. BIll Burkett is a decorated Vietnam era veteran who served 28 years in senior command and staff positions within the US Army and Army National Guard. While serving on the National Guard staff for then Governor George W. Bush, Burkett broke ranks and exposed an ongoing scam of reporting over 1,700 soldiers as present (Ghost Soldiers- USA Today, 2001) and fraudulent readiness reporting (USA Today) as well as the shredding of George W. Bush's own military service files. Burkett was one of five subjects in James Moore's book, "Bush's War for ReElection," and one of the sources for information in the Michael Moore's film "Farenheit 911." He is decorated soldier and recognized military process expert.

Also, as we reported today, CBS credited Burkett as a document source for a Feb 2004 story which was broadcast on their network. It was about his allegations that Bush had people throw away his records. They did not question Burkett's authority, despite the fact that other media like Boston Globe and ABC refused to touch him with a 10-foot pole

In e-mail messages to a Yahoo discussion group for Texas Democrats, Burkett laid out a rationale for using what he termed "down and dirty" tactics against Bush. He said that he had passed his ideas to the Democratic National Committee but that the DNC seemed "afraid to do what I suggest."

In another message, dated Sept. 4, Burkett hinted he might have had advance knowledge of some details in an explosive segment that aired Sept. 8 on CBS's "60 Minutes."

---

** Can anyone check out the yahoo group?**

It looks like he may be a little net saavy - and that could be an opening into his head and what tactics might be afloat.

OFF FROM A RELATED SITE: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Texas-Democrats/message/7074 From: "Rosalinda" Date: Thu Aug 19, 2004 4:50 pm Subject: Veterans Caravan [for Kerry] Update [Texas portion, Sept 24 to Oct 2] ADVERTISEMENT CITY TEAM CAPTAIN REQUIREMENTS AND CITY TEAM CAPTAIN SIGNUP ROSTER The following are the requirements that a City Team Captain must fulfill. Fulfilling these requirements is critical to the success of the Veterans Caravan For Senator John Kerry. Your position is vital and we definitely appreciate your involvement. The key to success is communication. 1. Via email keep these following members continually notified of what actions you are taking in behalf of the caravan and when needed , ask for prior permission before taking any actions: Rick Bolanos, email – Rbolanos@v..., Contact # - 915 – 630-3036 Larry Romo, email – LLromo@m..., Contact # - 210-219-1905 Jim Cumming, email – txdemocraticvets@a..., Contact # - 713-863-0433 Do not make any commitments on behalf of the Veterans Caravan until you receive written permission via email from either Rick Bolanos, Larry Romo or Jim Cumming. 2. You are the host for the time we come to your city/town to the point we leave your city/town. It is imperative that we keep to our timeline so your plan for us must keep to the times listed in the schedule. There is no room for flexibility unless there is an extreme emergency beyond human control. 3. Find us a hotel that will house 53 people. Our maximum cost we can spend is $80 per room which would include any city occupancy and state sales tax. We need two separate beds in each room for two vets. To simplify matters get the rooms to be all non-smoking. Any smokers can smoke outside. Do not make a final commitment to any rooms until either Rick Bolanos, Larry Romo or Jim Cumming give the final say in writing to you via email. Please send Rick, Larry and Jim your hotel recommendation with prices, etc., via email by 1 Sep 04. 4. Find us a perferably indoor venue (example: vet hall) to have the veterans rally at. We are concerned with an outdoor venue about the weather. Coordinate with the venue manager all necessary requirements such as a stage, microphone, and chairs for the veterans. You are responsible to set up the entire program within the time specified on our schedule. If possible, try to set up an inexpensive meal after rally for us (donated preferred). For the selected venue, we hope you can solicit local Democrats for donations to cover the expenses or get the venue donated. Your are responsible to advertise the event to draw local and regional veterans to the rally. You may have a copy of our list to search nearby zip codes, locations, etc. We need a lot of vets and also non-veteran TDV members, and others, to show up. Please send Rick, Larry and Jim your tentative venue program by 14 Sep 04, including rally location time, etc., in conformance with our bus itinerary that we have provided you. 5. Please give Larry Romo via email the addresses of the finalized hotel and venue by 16 Sep 04. He will produce a master list of maps for the bus driver and others needing the maps. 6. Larry Romo will continually update the schedule with the locations of the hotels and venues as they are finalized. 7. One wonders if Burkett followed Cleland's advice. If Burkett actually sent copies of the docs to the Kerry campaign (which they haven't mentioned receiving up to now), look for staffers to start scrambling for cover.

According to the NRO, the Prowler(??)(sheesh, there have been so many) these docs were sitting in the DNC 6 weeks ago. They were trying to decide what to do with them. Yeah right.

Between Burkett, Barnes, Rather's daughter, the DNC, and Dan the Man himself, we have a home grown scandal of epic proportions.

No, you got it right, except that she was working on it for five years without turning up anything. In other words, she and Rather refused to believe anything positive. They just knew there had to be something damaging out there, and they were going to keep at it until they found it. That's not simple bias. That's obsession, blind partisanship of a deeply disturbing nature, and a complete misuse of their positions in journalism.

"But none of them have called me back."

Maybe they called back the next day. Or the next.

"If Burkett actually sent copies of the docs to the Kerry campaign (which they haven't mentioned receiving up to now), look for staffers to start scrambling for cover."

The early article from the American Prowler portrayed tips from Kerry campaigners that some had indeed seen the documents.

BTW, how does he have Cleland's cell ph. number???

"Is this the same Max Cleland who blew himself up with a grenade?"

I read it was kind of a "hold muy beer and watch this" thing.

Something about him being on a beer run and dropped a grenade, someone dropped a grenade, someone threw a grenade? Max picked it up and the pin had been or was pulled. It detonated and I think he lost both legs and one arm.

He seems to be a very bitter person, I may have also been when your entire remaining life take a very bad permanent turn for the worse.

I thought I had been paying attention: Burkett was an accomplice of Michael Moore?
