<> Horrors! Well, I guess that settles it. How convenient--now we don't have to deal with the substance of his argument. We can just dismiss him as another right-wing kook. [/sarcasm off] This is what's called an ad hominem argument. Not acceptable by either the rules of debate or of logic. <<. . .is affiliated with two prominent conservative legal groups and helped draft a petition urging the Arkansas Supreme Court to disbar President Clinton for giving misleading testimony in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case, the Los Angeles Times said. >> The evidence just keeps piling up, doesn't it? He helped to disbar the greatest president in our lifetimes, our nation's first black president--he must be a racist! [/sarcasm off (again)] <> Like the politicians say, you can publish good news about me or bad news, just make sure you get my name spelled right! Thanks, Complete B.S., for the freeper plug. I'd like to know if Jim Robinson has noted an increase in hits and registrations as a result of the free publicity in the MSM this week. <> It doesn't matter that the story is bogus! The important thing is that we have evidence of a right-wing conspiracy to expose the fraud. Those horrible, disgusting conservatives. Shame on them! <<(Cleland) said counterattack. So I gave them the information to do it with," Burkett wrote. >> That should read, "So I manufactured the information to do it with."

The purpose of this CBS article is to give credit, in a warped, old guard journalistic manner. They've now unmasked the man who cut them down, and they've taken a bow to the new media world of Free Republic.

The great army of spear-throwing Zulus has just clapped together their shields to show their respect to the firearms in the hands of the colonizing new media.

These people have constructed an alternate view of reality that is internally consistent to a large extent. When it rubs up against reality too hard, they just scream epithets (or, depending on the circumstances, strap on an explosive belt).

I wish more conservatives recognized this about liberals. They do not see themselves as bad people. In fact, if reality in fact were as liberals perceive it to be, their actions would be entirely right and proper. What conservatives need to do somehow is open liberals' eyes so they'll see the truth.

Typewriters dent the paper! All of the letters have slight impressions you can feel and see. Modern printers don't dent the paper.

No problem. Just use an impact printer at 360dpi. They're still available. And for the extra touch of authenticity, they can even handle carbon paper.

Exactly. It was a question to seeBS.

What is facinating to me is that CBS is reacting like a political party in their response rather than a news organization.

For a REAL news organization, the response is quite simple:

"The documents are forged"
"We were duped"
"We retract our story"
"We appologize to President Bush for our inaccurate portrayal"
"We are making the necessary internal changes to assure this type of mistake will never happen again"

End of Line

My opinion regarding this situation is that CBS and the DNC are clearly partnered. CBS is the marketing arm; Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt surrounding the Bush administration the product.

When a news organizion throws up completely irrelavent reporting (Buckhead is a Republican) as a way of "averting attention" it must believe there exists a group of people that will cling to the irrelavent fact(s) as a way out of the logic trap that CBS is a fraudulent organization Vs. I have and continue to trust CBS.

A group they themselves must have had a hand in creating through other successful manipulative endevors. i.e. "This pathetic mindless Jedi mindtrick stuff has worked every time we've tried it in the past, of course it will work now".

Groupthink 101.

I really can't trust anything I read from CBS' website. I think they made this whole story up.

"What conservatives need to do somehow is open liberals' eyes so they'll see the truth."
All we can really do, I'm afraid, is calmly and respectfully place the truth in front of them and try to appeal to the ones who are capable of logic. I learned a long time ago that it is useless to try and speak rationally to an irrational person. You can only ration with someone who is rational.
The beauty of conservatism and Constitutionalism is the fact that it, when it works best, is simple, rational, and logical. On the other hand, liberalism is emotion-driven, hypocritical, and irrational because so much of it is based on envy, greed, fear, jealousy and other mental attitude sins. As Rush says, it's easy to be a lib, all you have to do is just think emotionally and vote for those who appeal to your emotions. Libs don't often realize that they do that, but many libs like their emotional highs and lows and dramatics and are going to reject anyone's ideas that do not line up with what the lib's emotions "like". Again, some people can be persuaded, others are just a waste of time. For example, consider this....
I will acknowledge that a good deal of Democrats' rage against President Bush is due to Florida 2000, but they need a scapegoat, a target for their irrational hatred of the entire Republican Party. What REALLY burns Democrats and the Old Media up is the fact that THEY aren't still running the show, that the Natural Order of Things (read: pre-1994 political life) no longer exists and isn't likely to return anytime soon, but rather than be that honest with themselves, they'd rather vent their rage on The Latest Enemy Target (used to be Newt Gingrich and Trent Lott, now GWB). Honestly though, do you really think a bitter "the old days when we ran things were better" Demo die-hard is going to listen to reason? Don't hold your breath. Go ahead and try, but it's gonna be an uphill pull.
Some liberals already have their minds made up. Therefore, they do not wish to be confused by the facts. Good luck with the ones you CAN talk to, though.

I learned a long time ago that it is useless to try and speak rationally to an irrational person. You can only ration with someone who is rational.

As a former liberal, I must respectfully say that while your statements are correct on the surface, they fail to take into account that liberals act rationally within their world view. I wish there were some way for conservatives to see the world through liberals' eyes. Obviously one wouldn't want such a thing to be a permanent condition, but I think it might help conservatives to understand liberals.

Unfortunately, while liberalism is based on a mostly-rational belief system [whose biggest problem is that it doesn't conform with reality], liberals tend to be very defensive of their belief system, and such defensiveness can extend to the point of either refusing to believe something that is right in front of them, or coming up with totally irrational explanations for it [e.g. one liberal suggested that perhaps Killian had created his documents on his computer and they were printed out later after printing technology improved. No explanation for why Killian would have composed a memo-to-file on punched cards or paper tape.]

Even this, however, can be probably be overcome by one of two methods:

Two propositions I would suggest exploring with liberals would be: I would posit that most liberals probably subconciously believe the above two propositions; getting them to recognize them conciously may allow them to recognize their consequences.

Therefore, they do not wish to be confused by the facts.

I can't pretend to know that all liberals are exactly like me, but I would suggest that while liberals don't like to be confronted by "other people's" facts, it is possible for "seeds of doubt" to grow to the point that a liberal starts seeking the truth. The turning point might be described as "Hmm... that's funny. I wonder what else that person is lying about?"

This is one of the reasons I find the Rather story so exciting. Even if I hadn't lost my liberal blinders years ago, I most certainly would have lost them as a result of that story. That Dan Rather maintained the veracity of documents that he knew to be fake, but that he knew no reasonable person could believe to be genuine would have made it abundantly clear that he believes all liberals are idiots. And somehow I don't fancy being called an idiot.

Since I no longer I have my liberal blinders, I can't be certain of how liberals react to this story, but I predict that there are going to be an awful lot of people who suddenly realize that they've been manipulated for far too long by unscrupulous liars who played them for fools, and who aren't going to like that.

I wonder when they're going to face reality -- it's NOT a flap, it's a scandal!

And, in fact, the whole situation with Dan Rather could best be termed an attempted coup.

Is it not unusual for stories to disappear from CBS news website ?

I haven't been around in a while, but it seems strange this story is gone.

All they have really managed to do is point out how Buckhead is smarter & quicker than CBS news and the whole RAT establishment.

We need to remind them that the truth is the truth even when it is first spoken by your political enemy.

The revelation could fuel speculation among Democrats that Republicans have orchestrated efforts to debunk the CBS News story.
