Where Kerry Went Wrong: Kerry and Shrum got it backward
Newsweak ^ | 9/27 issue | Jonathan Alter

Posted on 09/18/2004 10:17:05 PM PDT by Cableguy

Kerry and Shrum got it backward. If they'd sliced up Bush this summer, they could have used the debates to seem presidential.

After Labor Day, the political calendar goes into a time warp. Everything speeds up. With voters finally starting to pay attention, a week is about the equivalent of a normal month in political time. In late October the intensity can be so great that creative campaigns sometimes accomplish in a single day what it might once have taken three months to imprint on the minds of the voters. We don't know yet if we'll see such inventiveness this year, which means that for all of the weeping and moaning and rending of garments by despondent Democrats, we simply don't know if John Kerry is finished. We do know that his strategy so far, designed by Bob Shrum, lies in ruins, and for reasons that go far beyond the campaign's failure to respond quickly enough to the Swift Boat ads.

Shrum's grand plan wasn't complicated. He figured that with most voters believing the country is on the "wrong track," all that Kerry had to do was establish his credibility as a potential commander in chief and he would win—hence the "bio" convention. No need to respond directly to Bush ads sliming him for wanting to cut the same weapons systems that Bush's father cut. No need to explain how the Iraq war had been botched. No need to discredit Bush at all, because he was already thoroughly discredited.

Jonathan Alter is a liberal. As for his advice to Kerry, it doesn't work because Alter, like Kerry, never tells us what Kerry would do different than Bush in the White House. And I have to laugh at the notion cutting and running in the face of the Al Qaeda affiliated Al Zarqawi terrorists IN Iraq would make America safer. Heck, even Ketchup Boy himself said Iraq IS part of the War On Terror. Alter doesn't acknowledge the Democratic presidential candidate is absolutely awful. What we can be thankful for is the libs continuing to be under the delusion the country agrees with them in their hatred of America. Alter and Co. are in for a rude awakening on November 3rd.

Kerry wanted to cut those weapons during the heat of the Cold War.

KErry campaign figured the MSM was doing the heavy lifting on the negative campaigning. That way Kerry could be the guy on the white horse.

It wasnt enough. The GOP convention rebuted the phony MSM anti-Iraq war spin and told people, 'this is the war on terror, we didnt start it, but we will finish it - if you let Bush lead.'

Kerry had no retort to this - BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN IGNORING THE WAR ON TERROR. He doesnt have a position except "sensitivity".

So Kerry is reduced to bashing Iraq and spreading defeatism and gloom to 'win' that debate. But he CANT if he doesnt have credibility on the war on terror, since clearly Iraq is a part of the war on terror.

.
I still don't understand why he isn't in Levenworth turning big rocks into small ones.

As far as I'm concerned, he should be in Siberia in the Gulag. He loves the commies so much . . .

Kerry hasn't stopped selling out this country. Check out the John F. Kerry Timeline. Email it to your friends.

The hive is arriving at a conclusion. This is the 4th or 5th article from the MSM that I've seen tonight that attempts a post-mortem on the Kerry campaign and postulates the following:

1. Kerry is going to lose.

2. The reason for the impending loss is that "the Democrats haven't been mean enough".

They then proceed to offer free advice to the Kerry campaign about how they can turn it around.

Wonder if they'd be that free with advice if the tables were turned...???

Alter.

Hey - the reason Kerry is losing is because he's such . . a . . . DORK! His wife can't even stand to be called Terry Kerry, her husband's last name.

The more people see of Kerry, the less they like him. He needs media filtering. But an excess of filtering just gave CBS, and the leftwing 'mainstream', generally, a black eye. And the swelling won't go down in just five or six weeks.

Kerry has to:
hide his phoney VietNam history
hide his anti-VietNam war treason
hide his leftist and rather meager Senate history
pretend to be a centrist
hide his 'I am the new JFK' bs
fight off the Swiftvets
keep his wife from hogging the limelight
keep Clinton from hogging the limelight
pretend he can relate to common folk
explain how his 'more sensitive' war on terror would work,
and attack Bush, without being overly blatant about it,
.
his VP choice, Johnwhatever, Esq.ambulance.chaser,
(from a state Kerry will lose) isn't helping any with
people who aren't hard core democrats
.
Is he still asking Teddy for help?,
Republican pranksters should attend Kerry's ralleys wearing lifejackets

I agree, if that had been your average John Doe and he pulled some of the chit that Kerry did while in uniform he would have been tried for treason and spent many a year at a federal prison some place. Really sucks, Kerry's a traitor now, as he was then and should pay for the things he's done against America and the fine men and women serving in our Armed Forces.

Sheesh. It never occurs to Alter that perhaps the problem isn't Kerry's campaign; it's Kerry himself.

Alter's road map for Kerry will take him straight off the nearest cliff. Liberals just don't get it, thank God. Talk about looking through the wrong end of the telescope.

You just don't get it.
The Grand Plan is to dump this turkey Kerry to make way for Hil'/Bil' in '08.
The Clinton operators who moved into the K
erry camp are there to try to protect down-ballot races and avoid a disaster like '92.

Gee, all this time I've thought Jonathan Alter was a journalist. Here he seems to acting as an ad hoc campaign strategist.

No such thing as a leftist media, no siree.

Nailing Bush means painting a big "F" for failure on his forehead for what's going on right now, then pivoting to explain in the simple terms that have eluded Kerry what he would do differently in the months ahead: Give reconstruction contracts to allies in exchange for helping us stabilize Iraq. Set a date certain for getting out of Iraq. Promise we'll never have another Iraq. Fight terrorism where it threatens us most, which is not in Iraq.

Kerry has been pushing this idea of "Bush didn't get our allies involved, and that's why it's failing", which goes to show just how inept he is. The Oil for Food Scandal beginning to break, and it is glaringly obvious WHY our allies didn't want us to go into Iraq. When folks find out about it, they'll start to think the President was an GENIUS for not including those countries, even though he did TRY in order to try to assuage the media and rabid Dems. It is obvious, from the reporting about the scandal, that our allies were not only NOT interested in working with us,they were actively working AGAINST us until just recently!

News Media have been continually trying to slice and dice GW Bush for the last four years.

Exhibit A: SeeBS has doggedly been working on the President Bush TANG story for five years! Sheesh! That isn't journalism, that's fanaticism.

Wonder if they'd be that free with advice if the tables were turned...???

Yeah, they would, but their "unbiased" help is always something like this: "Republicans, if you want to win, stop the false, misleading, negative ads, stop the racism, disenfranchisement of voters, ruining our schools, starving children, stealing granny's Social Security, poisoning the air and water, and isolating us from our staunch allies like the French."

They'll do anything to pin this on the delivery and not the message. Which is fine with me - as long as they do that, they'll keep losing.
