The CBS quotations of Pierce come from a 'Professional Opinion' memo Pierce sent to "60 Minutes" staff on Sept. 14, which was then posted as a PDF document on the CBS News Web site (along with Pierce's home address in the letterhead). But to hear James Pierce tell it, his experience seems to parallel that of James and Will.
This columnist contacted Pierce by telephone Sept. 16. He said he was unable to talk specifically about the work he has been doing for CBS, because - contrary to how CBS News portrays it - he says he has not yet in fact rendered a definitive conclusion on all, or even some, of the documents in question.
According to Pierce, his 'Professional Opinion' letter was only a preliminary opinion, not a final judgment. "They didn't inform me that they were using it for that purpose," Pierce said, referring to the "Professional Opinion" memo. "CBS is wrong."

I'm new to Free Republic by the way, but started visiting the site after I read that 'Buckhead' had gotten the ball rolling on the document forgery story. This site is a great resource!
Welcome home, FReeper.
Welcome!
Free Republic is an oasis of knowledge in a dry, witless desert of mainstream media bias and ignorance.
Stick around. It's going fun for the next 6 weeks.
Welcome.
Welcome....It is great and freepers are the best people a person could want to meet....just one big happy family! ;^)
I love it how the media still uses the term "CBS Expert"
Welcome.
Welcome!! This is a great place...it's addicting.
Welcome to Free Republic!
Welcome ..I've been here a week now so I 'm pretty new as well. This site has ruined my life. I havent slept in a week , dont eat much anymore and have gone to work like a zombie ..AND IM LOVING IT !!!!!!
In reality this place is more important then you can imagine. This is making history..
Should have been here during Monica-gate...it was a blast!
-We equip fellow conservatives for battle in the war against liberalism and socialism.
-We inform fellow conservatives with facts to dispute the MSM (main stream media) propoganda.
-We post humorous images and articles so we can laugh at liberals instead of showing anger like DUh
Summary: We kick butt!
"This is the SeeBS Uneven Views, with Damn Blather."
But folks read this headline like Pierce has thrown up his hands. This isn't the case. He just was annoyed that they posted his ill considered first memo. Clearly he should be growing more embarrassed by the day. The fact that he is still working this.. is very curious.
Welcome -- you'll like it here! I know I do. In fact, if Free Republic were a real place, I'd move there and never go on vacation. :-)
Leni
Welcome. This site helps me keep what sanity I have left after watching the MSM distort, lie, and spin on a daily basis.
ROTFL. IOW, "OK, we blew the first ones, but we've hired better forgers. Will we fool anybody with these? How about these?"
Baynative,
That's a great point. The "sentinel" effect will help us in ways we won't be able to see specifically. But the days when the MSM could just lie to us with impunity are over.
Thanks for all the great 'welcome' messages folks - such a friendly place this is!
Actually dalight, in talking to Pierce it *did* seem like he was close to throwing up his hands...the poor guy sounded exhausted, beaten-down and somewhat confused. I really did feel for him.
By the way, a WaPo reporter got hold of me on Friday and spent about an hour talking to me about the Pierce info...don't know if they're going to use any of my info, but that's fine if they don't - that leaves the Athens Banner-Herald as the sole news source with the scoop on Pierce!
Clever!
Oh, we can imagine it. In fact, some of us think making history is a burden we gladly bear. It is up to us, the most powerful force in the world, the citizens of the United States, to make sure the history we are making is one in which the Republic prevails, freedom spreads, and a civilized world is preserved as the legacy for our children.
Welcome to the fight.
Dittos on ruining my life.. I spent the first couple days after the Buckhead post just reading everything I could, but soon felt the urge to jump in. It is absolutely addicting. Thank all for your wonderful thoughts and humor.
Welcome to the party pal!
Your wish is my command, Baynative!
Thanx..trying to do my share as well..I've written to CBS , advertisers , Rush , Hannity and others in the week I'm here.I've also sent this site to a few other like minded friends(scarce as they are in the NY metro area )
I used to think FR was a bunch of GOP parrots, but I've been quite pleasantly surprised to find many people willing to criticize Repubs AND RATS when their actions conflict with conservative values and principles.
The amount of news and information available here is second to none as far as I'm concerned. Thanks JimRob and all FRiends!
MSM distort, lie, and spin on a daily basis.
I have even begun screaming at the TV lately. Things Like "Bullsh**" and other kind remarks. It really is too much sometimes. I get so frustated that this is most peoples only source of news.
Ditto
Oh brother...does it ever. Release your frustrations with Old Media here on FR. You can talk back to Old Media but they're not listening.
And welcome, of course.
"The fact that he is still working this.. is very curious."
he's being paid...
Welcome to the vortex. FreeRepublic - Uncovering the liberal media WMD's (Words of Mass Distortion).
Anyway.. this Free Republic is a very interesting thing. I see in the core of it .. the ideas that are underlying the Open Source movement. The seminal paper on this is The Cathedral and the Bazaar by Eric Steven Raymond. His arguments about software development are very much applicable to the news. Perhaps you can do a trend piece on this.
In this story, I have seen alot of self congratulations around here. And, they are deserved. But I have also seen the power and goodness of real journalists really digging for a story, opposing journalists that believe you have the story and then find the facts to support it.
Free Republic has lots of threads and lots of conjecture but folks also are here because they are sick of spin. So in the exchange, real info gets shared. The ethos of quoting here and asking for links and sources rather than analyzing our navels is all part of this.
This place is a sausage grinder for the truth. You will notice in the news thread tons of postings of info that runs contrary to the main world view of many who lurk here. This isn't a place to bury your head in the sand. But I prefer it here to any place I have ever seen. Drudge gets the headline and he is also very fair, not because he agrees with the things he posts, its just cause they seem important (as if I know what Drudge thinks). The MSM needs to catch up.
Anyway, I look for great things from you now that you have found at least one good source, lol!
omstrat, Good job! That all helps.
I've called Directors of Viacom's Board to express my outrage. I think going through the "Corporate" channels is a good tactic, because business responds to shareholder interests and complaints a lot faster than bureaucratic government entities (like the Navy or the FCC) do.
One other little thing I do is that I WILL NOT let "Pauline Kael Democrats" indulge in their smug denigrations of President Bush without being challenged. Whenever they make some remark like, "Bush is stupid," I confront them with the truth. It's a small thing, but Liberals are basically sheep and cowards. They only support Kerry because they think it makes them part of the in-crowd, and because they think it will bring them approbation.
It comes down to this, Liberals think putting down the President is like wearing a smashing new outfit on which they expect to get compliments. It really sets them back when you point out that what they're wearing is not only ugly, but it makes them look ugly too.
Like Buckhead said, "Freepers collectively possess more analytical horsepower than the entire news division at CBS,..."
The more, merrier.
Welcome to FR. We've got quite a few FReepers in Georgia.
That is one of the funnies picture / quips I have seen on this topic
Saying FR is addicting is an understatement....i'm on it off and on all day - FNC on the TV and FR on the computer. I sit here and laugh myself sick some evenings...and darn it, I missed seeing Miss Alabama get crowned Miss America last night because I was sitting here reading as usual...
It seems to me that all of the people CBS and Rather thought they had behind them on the 'documents' from the Sept. 8th 60 Minutes broadcast are running away from them faster than scared bunnies.
Welcome to a place where real blood flows!
