[history]
WASHINGTON It was the first public allegation that CBS News used forged memos in its report questioning President Bush's National Guard service a highly technical explanation posted within hours of airtime citing proportional spacing and font styles.
But it did not come from an expert in typography or typewriter history as some first thought. Instead, it was the work of Harry MacDougald, an Atlanta lawyer with strong ties to conservative Republican causes and who helped draft the petition urging the Arkansas Supreme Court to disbar President Clinton after the Monica Lewinsky scandal, the Los Angeles Times has found.

OTOH, the LA Times is a Dem-linked newspaper.
And Dan Rather is a Dem-linked anchorman. Even speaks at Dem fundraisers.

Somehow, in their little twisted brains, they must think it proves Rove leaked the memos.
Other than that, I don't understand all the hub-bub that a conservative Republican is posting on a conservative Republican board.

Now that Buckhead is a "GOP linked attorney", the forged documents are now magically authentic.

Perhaps the demo-people would feel better if Buckhead was just an elderly gentleman and his wife, traveling in their car in Florida on a trip to see their grandchildren, and just happened to have their laptop in an active wireless zone, and picked up the freerepublic vibrations. They would listen in....etc etc.

This has to be quite possibly the silliest story I've heard out of Memogate yet. A member of FR, a *gasp* Republican? Who'd have thunk it?
Sheesh. I get better investigative reporting from my four year old who tells me what's going on with my ex wife.

Why is this "news"? Not your posting, but the search for the man who first noticed the forgeries and his background?
It certainly seems the press is trying to bring back the "Rove planted these forgeries" argument...though as we've seen before by those floating the Rove conspiracy theory, the Seattle Times isn't completely willing to acknowledge teh documents are fakes either. Talk about hedging your bets.

a highly technical explanation What a crock. This lie is being repeated enough that it's becoming accepted as full-blown truth. Did the reporter even read Buckhead's posting?
To: Andy from Beaverton
Funny how libs are doing a public service when they uncover something; but conservatives MUST have some hidden, insidious agenda. That's basically the impression I have gotten over the coverage.

He could be (just to coin an extreme example) a bestialist who rides from sheepfold to sheepfold to rustle his conquests, and that still wouldn't make
overcopied, crumpled-up Microsoft Word documents into genuine Vietnam-era military memoranda. As the old Texas news hack would say, "with respect, deal with the facts".

Well, let me just say I am from Texas originally though I live in NY now, and my daughter is active in state politics. I'm well known in media circles, and I unfortunately was just caught passing forged documents off as the real thing in order to bring down a sitting president.
Hope that doesn't give away my rather private identity.

Nobody can expect CBS to present any kind of credible interpretation of facts on its own, ever again. CBS is oblivious to truth, and incapable of acknowledging or countering rational arguments made against the CBS docs.
When individuals act this way, we say they are habitual liars and criminals. And when pubic corporation act this way, we say they are thoroughly corrupt, unqualified to be listed on major stock exchanges, and not suitable to hold licenses to a shared public resource, the airwaves.

The network also has sought to counter the arguments by referring to a typewriting script distributor, who says the typing style in the memos has been available since 1931. Wrong, cub reporter.
Times New Roman was available since the 1930's as a typesetting font used by the Times of London. It was not until 1980 that Times New Roman was licensed as a word processor font and available as a typing font.
If you do not know the difference between a typesetting font and a font available on a typewriter, cub reporter, ask the Editor of the Seattle Times to arrange a little lecture for you by the guys who run the printing presses that print The Seattle Times.
When an Internet poster who is a physician by profession knows more about printing technology than a reporter for the Seattle Times, it illustrates the abysmal ignorance of those who now work for the news media.

Do you know - I found out Dan Rather has held Democrat fundraisers, the lawyer for Burkett is a democrat hoping to run for Supreme Court in Texas, Dan Rather's daughter is in the Texas Democrats and hopes to run for mayor.
Also realized that Burkett has the cell phone number of Max Cleveland, had contacted the DNC, NY Times, and other "friendly" Bush-haters to try and ruin Bush.
I also found out that CBS is a free network site for DNC propaganda. Now we are investigating how far back this has been going on and how many more "fake" documents have been used to support their "news".
