Burkett: I Warned CBS to Authenticate Documents

Former National Guard commander Bill Burkett said Monday night that he warned producers at CBS that they needed to authenticate documents he gave them that were critical of President Bush's National Guard record - because he couldn't guarantee they were real.

"Before I gave up any documents I wanted to know what you were going to do with them," Burkett told CBS anchorman Dan Rather. "And I insisted that they be authenticated." Rather admitted that CBS had failed to heed their primary source's warning.

Burkett also insisted that he wasn't the ultimate source of the documents, and that he invented a cover story, saying they came from a fellow Guardsman, when CBS pressed him to reveal his own source.

"Your staff pressured me to a point to reveal that source," Burkett told Rather. "I simply threw out a name, that was basically, I guess, to get a little pressure off for the moment."

Rather said CBS couldn't verify the identity of Burkett's ultimate source.

Asked if he had "forged" or "faked' anything, Burkett answered, "No sir."

Rather personally apologized and said CBS News President Andrew Heyward would launch an independent investigation.

I think Dan arrived early in Texas to go over just what roles he and Burkett would 'assume' before the public; so as to create a story where they both get a little egg on their face; but appear to save some face as well.

The problem with committed lying Libs is you never know where they will - or won't - stop.

The old plethora of cover stories ploy. That ploy's been around since Dallas November 1963.

This almost has to be self-serving BS, from Burkett. He won't disclose a source that burned his credibility as well as CBS.

Probably, he wrote them or had them made and his "source" is as imaginary as much of his other stories about Bush.

In any case, who would rely on Burkett at this point? His stuff belongs on alt.conspiracy with the rest of the lies and tinfoil. If he ever had anything to say he is screwed now.

It seems beyond belief that the feds haven't gotten involved since this is clearly a conspiracy to subvert a federal election. Or do we need a congressional investigation? Hannity and Colmes indicated that Rather's producer called Kerry's campaign headquarters to say they had damaging Guard docs. on Bush. Collusion? And yes, Rather ran home to Texas to get tories straight with Burkett...and maybe Robin and/or Barnes?

We just have to keep them talking:

Burkett: I warned CBS. I didn't forge anything. I got 'em from someone else.

Cleland: Burkett talked to me an I said we needed to play hardball

Coehlo: DNC had the memos before Sept 8 but thought they were fake.

CBS: We got 'em from an unimpeachable source.

There's loose strings hanging out all over the place. Keep talkin' guys.

What a frickin coward!

First he lobs hand grenades behind a wall of media protection and anonymity, and when the wall collapses and he is exposed he points the finger at Daddy CBS.

The forger and liar speaks.

This is good. Keep him talking to the American people for the next 6 weeks ... Then launch a full blown criminal investigation using the RICO statutes.

And WHERE did he get them ??????

Yes, that question must be answered. And also this one: Who put CBS in contact with Burkett? Surely Burkett is not the unimpeachable source Dan Rather referred to earlier in the story.

Wow. If CBS doesn't fire Rather now, then CBS is even more corrupt and politicized than I imagined. And I thought my opinion of that clown outfit couldn't get any lower. Phwewwww....!
