Seriously, why would they say this unless the guy already hijacked the airplane? What does this mean?

The Watch List is the government's list of known terrorists.
A man's name came up on a flight who is on the Watch List. Ideally, this should have been discovered before the plane was in the air.
Since it was discovered once the plane left, the plane is making an early landing.

We might be a little late tonight at the airport. Do you think you and the girls can stop and get some food - I'm going to be starving."
"What happened? Well, this guy in seat 15C was acting all wierd.... he and a couple of his buddies ... middle eastern dudes I think.... all got up and took turns walking into the bathroom.... They kept passing this bag back and forth.... I think they were building a bomb or something.... maybe putting together a gun or something...."
"Anyhow.... this young Marine got up and had to take a piss... well... these arab guy starting giving him crap... so the Marine decks him... then the other arab guy goes after the Marine... next think I know... 50 guys all jump up and nail these arabs to the floor.... one guy had a gun ... musta been an air marshall...."
"Turned out that the young Marine saved all of our lives... hey.... can you get some beer too.... I think we need to buy this guy some drinks when we get home . . . . "
Fiction is better than no facts according to Rather.

because the passenger lists are not shared in a timely manner. don't kid yourself, we have many FR civil liberties types who think there is a constitutional right to fly anonymously - and who oppose sharing of passenger lists with government agencies.
To: LiveFreeOrDie2001
Think about it, folks- If you're asking why he was allowed on the plane, please remember that they probably noticed him at the originating airport, and placed air marshals around him on the plane, but allowed him to board in order to avoid extradition proceedings.

Why do they always divert suspicious flights to Bangor, Maine??? Maine residents must really like that. Will this affect how Maine residents vote?

Nobody actually lives in Maine. A few summer homes and some P.O. Boxes for politicians who vote themselves into office, but last I checked, there were no permanent residents.
It's kinda weird.
