Schwarzenegger Vetoes Calif. Driver's License Bill

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday vetoed a bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants to get a state driver's license.

The move was expected after Schwarzenegger cited security concerns in opposing the legislation, which had been proposed by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez.

"One of the most important duties of the governor of a state is to protect its citizens," Schwarzenegger wrote in his veto message.

"Determining the true identity and history of an individual is a key component of that protection. This bill does not adequately address the security concerns that my Department of Homeland Security and I have and I cannot support it," he wrote.

In his drive last year to recall Gov. Gray Davis, Schwarzenegger campaigned hard against a similar law that approved driver's licenses for illegal immigrants, winning popular support for his stand.

After Schwarzenegger was sworn in as governor last January, state lawmakers repealed the license law.

Nunez, a Democrat from Los Angeles, was expected to issue a statement later on Wednesday, a spokesman said.

Agree, but half a loaf is still better than no slices at all.

Not conservative at all.

What is it about the word "ILLEGAL" you don't understand.
The bill should have never been entertained... just more wasted State resources.

Arnold could not be doing any better.
Unfortunately with the idiots in the legislature, that might not be good enough.

Lived there for 15 years, San Jose. But as you say the cats out, so we have to deal with it. Auhnold may be trying. You can't reverse 40 years of damage in one stroke. Maybe I would try but it wouldn't succeed. To many dim voters at stake.

He does support Bush's amnesty plan. He knows that he couldn't sign the bill since it was what cost Grayout Davis his job. Being a RINO doesn't make him stupid.

Well if I am reading this right, Arnold vetoed this bill- he didn't introduce it.

He's signing the damn thing (The Sierra-Nevada Conservancy)at 9:30 AM in Colfax, CA, at a railroad depot signing ceremony with a few "Born Again Pagan" GANG-GREEN EnvironMentalists in attendance, which is most appropriate as it's nothing but a "railroad job" by a very narrow, but very powerful special interest group headed by Robert Kennedy, Jr!!! (the Natural Resources Defense Council)

I watched the sunset on the last day of freedom in the Sierra-Nevada tonight, the last day of our Sierran Region not being in Arnold Schwarzenegger's huge BOX!!!

Surprised he didn't fold. He must still be all pumped up from the RNC. We should have elected McClintock...then we wouldn't have had to worry about which side Ahnold will go to.

Bump for the gun grabber pic.
